Ceremony & Cocktail Music

May 20th, 2008 @ 3:34 pm by Mrs. Candy Corn

After much consideration, we’ve decided to go with a live musician for the ceremony & cocktail hour. Due to the acoustics of the Chinese Rotunda, it makes the most sense to go with a musician as opposed to having a sound system in that space.
We’ll have our dj from 6:30pm until the end of the evening, but from 4:30pm-6:30pm, Christopher Dunn will be playing classical guitar (samples can be heard on his website). He has agreed to write an arrangement of “The Wind” by Cat Stevens for my processional, which I’ve always imagined going down the aisle to. Here’s a layout of the ceremony music:

The prelude (it’s up to him what he plays)
The wedding party’s processional (In my Life -The Beatles)
The bride’s processional (The Wind - Cat Stevens)
The interlude (it’s up to him)
The recessional (Here Comes the Sun - The Beatles)
The postlude (it’s up to him)

Chris will play slightly more Latin and Spanish guitar music for the cocktail hour. The total fee for the wedding ceremony plus the cocktail hour is $450.00, plus guests will get to look at this handsome stud strumming (hehe):

Is anyone else choosing non-traditional music to go down the aisle?

That looks and sounds awesome! I’m glad to see others are leaving the prelude and postlude music up to the instrumentalist. I was kind of worried it made me too laid back of a bride, but I really just want them to play what they are comfortable with! Also, other than the processional and recessional and reflection music, I don’t have any particular songs I would want to hear.

Anyway, thanks for setting my mind at ease!

I freakin’ adore that Cat Stevens song!!!! Awesome choice. We’re both classical musicians who play a lot of not-so-normal contemporary music, so I think we’ll nod to that by using classical music that’s not totally wedding-traditional (Ravel, Britten, Ives, Bartok), performed by our friends who are in a string quartet.

I also think it’s great to leave some of the choice to the musicians - sheet music can be really expensive to buy, so it’s really nice to be able to use stuff we already own when playing at weddings. :-) (Don’t worry, we pick pieces that are appropriate!)

I really love those “String Quartet Tribute To..” CDs. I have Tori Amos’ and the wedding party processional’s music will be to their version of “Pretty Good Year”.

I’ll likely be walking down the aisle to “Where Is My Mind” by Pixies, which seems like an odd song (not exactly the most romantic) but it’s meaningful to me and the boy. I haven’t decided yet if we’ll use the String Quartet’s version or the actual song yet, though.

awww… excellent choices (as usual)! I had a Catholic weddings… so no cool songs for me.

“In my life” was my uncle/daughter dance song, though.

My aunt & uncle had a clasical guitar player at their wedding and it set SUCH a beautiful mood.

CC and GorgesViola, if you love Cat Stevens, you should check out the movie “Harold and Maude.” The soundtrack is all his songs and it’s a beautiful– and totally offbeat– love story.

We are also having an acoustic guitar for the ceremony, and he’s going to change to an electric for the cocktail hour!!! I really love the sound of an acoustic, don’t you?

I believe we’re going to use In My Life for the wedding processional, too!!! Such good choices!!! ;)

We’re going with an acoustic guitar for the ceremony, then our friend iTunes will be taking over for the reception. We’re leaving it mostly up to the musician (a good friend of ours) on what to play and are in love with a lovely lilting almost spanish sounding piece for the processional. The recessional will be a tango vals, which is perfect, as we met at a tango dance. :) We’ll just need to resist dancing down the aisle.

@GorgesViola:
Mr. Candy Corn loves Ravel, Britten, Ives & Bartok :) He got all giddy when he saw your comment hehe.

@Tara:
Oooo I love the Pixies, nice choice!

@beanchar:
Hi beanchar! I absolutely love Harold and Maude, it’s one of the reasons I chose the song (I also love the scene in Almost Famous aaaaaaaand it’s in Rushmore). :)

@GetMarried4Less:
hahah that’s too funny

Picking out the music has been my favorite part of the planning so far! We’re having Love and Some Verses by Iron & Wine and Hoppipolla by Sigur Ros during our ceremony, as well as traditional pieces that all of our guests will like. Then we’re doing an iPod reception with a mix of our styles of music and more traditional wedding dance songs. We want the music we really like, but are worried that no one will recognize it and then not want to dance…so the mix it is.

I love that your choices Miss Candy Corn, and all of your ideas for that matter.
