About Miss Pineapple

Fontastic!

May 21st, 2008 @ 9:26 am by Miss Pineapple

Way back in the day when I wrote about some early invitation concepts, a few readers asked about specific typefaces. So, in addition to answering their questions I thought it may be helpful to write about a few of my favorite typefaces for wedding invitations. The type style and face you or your designer chooses is going to depend on the look and style you are going for, so these are by no means the only typefaces that are appropriate - they are just a few that I think work well.

I’ve lumped them into three groups Sweet/Girly, Traditional and Offbeat. The names of the groups are a fairly arbitrary way to start to categorize them that I made up, so you might think a traditional one is offbeat. (You can click to enlarge the images and the names are fictional)The typefaces that I am calling Sweet and Girly I think would be great for a spring or summer wedding that is traditional and slightly modern.

Linoscript

Murray Hill

Wade Sans Light

Brighton Plain

Dorchester ScriptFling

Bickley Script

Here are the typefaces I am calling Traditional (and fancy):

CarpenterGravura

Mahogany Script Std

University

Academy Engraved

Artisan Roman

Bickham Script - Shown with some swash capitals and alternates

Bodoni

Cancellaresca Script

The next set I am calling Offbeat, but some are more modern or retro:

AvenidaBernhard Fashion

Huxley

Parisian

Rubino Sans - Fill

What are your favorite wedding typefaces?

I am using BeauRivageOne, but LOVE the FeelScript font that a lot of the bees use. Too expensive for me though =P

I * heart* fonts :)

I used Scriptina and Mrs Eaves, love both of them.

Scriptina you can get for free off of dafont.com but Mrs Eaves is one you have to purchase.

Love the Murray Hill font. Picking fonts was almost as hard as picking colors, I just love too many!

I’m having a hard time matching up fonts– I like Chopin Script, and I think we might pair it with perpetua? Any thoughts?

We used Parisian, as we had a vintage-y invite.

Madame Pineapple, how did you KNOW I was currently spending all of my time obsessing over fonts?? :) Feeding my addiction, bad girl!

batik regular
Birkham Script Fancy
Adienne Kindbirg
and
Fontleroy

Burgues Script. It’s pretty pricey but so worth it if you are looking for a formal, calligraphy style font. I’m pretty sure I drool every time I use it.

i recently designed the wedding stationary for my friend’s wedding. she had her wedding at the pasadena museum of california art, so it lent itself to a very modern theme.
i used “Walkway Bold” for all of her stationary. i wish i could load a sample of it here. but the font is free on: http://www.dafonts.com

I found a free font that I love for accenting my more casual garden party/outdoor invitation:
MA Simple Pleasure

I used Honey Script which I found on dafont.com for our envelopes. I love it!

I used Bernhardt Modern for the details of the wedding and Zapfino for our names and titles.

I’m digging Murray Hill and Avenida, though. Nice fonts. Another favorite is Brochure, oddly enough. I think it’s just bold enough for highlighting text and is something a little different.

I wonder if anyone’s ever done a comicsans invitation. heh.

I love Scriptina and was thinking of using it to address our envelopes, but was worried the Post Office would have a hard time reading/delivering it. Has anyone had any experience with this? Thank you!

I used “fling” and “century gothic” on my invites for summer wedding. Looks really great.

I used Feel Script and Cooperplate Gothic Light on my invitations. I can’t wait to use Feel Script for our programs, menus, and various signs for the wedding!

Bernhard Fashion all the way. I remember seeing it on my parent’s invitations, my birth announcement, my aunt’s invitations… I’ve just always loved that font.
