About Mrs. Magnolia

…and now, the groom’s cake. Mr. Mags and I were torn on whether or not to have one – unlike the actual wedding cake, this would not be included in our reception package. Being the huge Georgia football fans that we are, something UGA-related was the only way to go, if we did decide to have one.

FMIL and I touched on the subject with Jeff, our baked, and he showed us an option that we both fell in love with. In fact, although we didn’t decide on a groom’s cake that night, FMIL decided that (1) we had to have that cake, and (2) she was going to pay for it. (I adore my in-laws, I really do!)

So what did we decide on? A cake which recreated the UGA football field, where Mr. Mags and I took our engagement pictures. The real selling point for this cake was the hedges – a point of pride for any Georgia football fan. Playing “between the hedges” is a long-standing tradition for the Dawgs, so much so that they didn’t even let the 1996 Olympics get in the way. That summer, the soccer competitions were set to take place at Sanford Stadium, UGA’s football field, and the hedges had to be taken out. Although the actual location of the hedges during this period was kept highly secret (rival teams are always suspected of potential sabotage!), rumor has it that they were planted in the state of Florida, and we actually moved Georgia soil as well so as not to “taint” the hedges with the nutrients of our neighbor to the south. Seriously – the hedges are a big deal. And our cake had them!

The UGA cake topper was a stocking stuffer from my mom – we got engaged on December 1, 2006, and she found this for us just a few weeks later. It was a bit too cutesy for our elegant wedding cake, but I think it went perfectly with the groom’s cake, and it received a ton of compliments.

We had zero debate about our cakes, and we couldn’t have been more thrilled with the results. Were you as decisive as we were about your cake designs?

Love that cake (even though I’m an Auburn alum — war eagle! :) )

We had a really easy time picking our Grooms’ cake which will be a guitar made to look identical to my fiance’s guitar. It was a gift from the widow of a very very close friend of my fiance’s so has special meaning and is totally him (being that he is a great (!) guitarist himself) :)

I still giggle about the rumor of “tainted” Florida soil, but I completely agree! No doubt about our cake- a Block O for Ohio State!

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DAWGS. Though I’ve only been to the campus twice, I’m a huge UGA fan. Since I went to a D-II school, I had to adopt a ‘real school’ and have followed them for years.

What an (obviously) awesome cake! Probably a good idea to pass on the spot in the corner that would be covered in Uga drool…

I’m kind of jealous to not be able to argue for something similar with Miss P. My alma mater’s stadium just won’t do. Then again, maybe I can do something from my days as the mascot… I guess I should say thanks for the inspiration, too ;).

I can’t believe it, first I write a post unknowingly adoring your cake, then your groom’s cake is perfect for Mr. Pineapple!

@Pineapples: Mr. P, I’m so glad to hear that you’re a UGA fan! Hunker down, you hairy dawgs! Mr. Mags and I are season ticket holders, and we’re currently debating which away games we’re going to be able to make it to this year. Maybe one day we’ll be up in your neck of the woods!

Miss P, I LOVE that we’re on the same cake wavelength! We’ll have to brainstorm about what Mr. P’s groom’s cake could look like…

Aww, good ‘ole Sanford Stadium! I just graduated from UGA in 2007! I love the idea of a grooms cake with school spirit but I don’t think this idea would fly with my French fiancé’s family….they just wouldn’t get it. So cute though!

@Mrs. Magnolia Well, I was the mascot during the ill-fated years my school was in no-good-standing-NCAA-member-land , transitioning between an Indian and a Crimson Hawk. We were still the Indians, but I was a big ol’ black bear. With a stupid, sappy smile. And purple eyes…

On second thought, maybe I’ll be better off asking for a cake that looks like a can of Miller Lite.

one of the best things about college football are the little things like the hedge conspiracy. i loves it! i remember seeing the frat boys setting up camp around our block ‘m’ in the quad before our games against michigan state and ohio state. good times.
