About Mrs. Toucan

Wii Will Get Fit.

May 22nd, 2008 @ 2:50 pm by Mrs. Toucan

Like the Lovebirds, the Toucans also went out to buy WiiFit yesterday! I’m hoping that it will help me get back on the exercise wagon. As a former college athlete, I used to be in tip-top shape but since quitting the swim team a few years back, I’ve been on “break” for a very very long time. It’s been so long since I’ve been able to make exercise as my daily routine, that I’m so out of shape and it’s actually frustrating when I work out because I can’t do the things I used to be able to do. You would think that the wedding would motivate me to get in shape, but it really hasn’t been the case. So… I’ve resorted to video game work outs - and enter Wii Fit.

Last night, as soon as we got home from dinner, Mr. Toucan and I hopped onto the Wii Balance Board to test it out. The first order of business was to enter in your height and birth date, so the machine could calculate and track your BMI and weight (sorry no pictures of me doing this :P).

Next, a series of balance tests to determine your “Wii Fit Age.” I didn’t fare so well…

I really wish we caught the part when my little Mii character grasped her back in pain and hobbled around like she was 80 years old. :P Anyway, after telling me my “Wii Fit Age,” the game lovingly scolded me for my fitness age being 12 years older than I really am - and then they gave me a personal trainer:

Wii Will Get Fit. : wedding exercise Img 20001Hi, Virtual Personal Trainer!

I decided to try yoga first… it’s easy, right?

Wii Will Get Fit. : wedding exercise YogaUm. no. The goal was to try to keep as steady as you can while keeping your balance inside the yellow circle. If you look at the left bottom corner of the picture, you will see that I have terrible balance. 0 points on the left side! :( At least I did better on another of the yoga poses…

Wii Will Get Fit. : wedding exercise Img 202(I think I might be a little TOO excited about my much better “Warrior Pose” Score)

And I’m also happy to say that I ROCKED one of the “Aerobic” exercises

Wii Will Get Fit. : wedding exercise Img 205Miss Toucan = Hula Hoop Champ

But I wasn’t so good at the soccer challenge…

Wii Will Get Fit. : wedding exercise Img 203See how I’m leaning exactly how my Mii is on the screen? Yeah, that’s not how it works (otherwise I’m sure I would have rocked this one too… ;) ). You actually have to shift your weight on your feet back and forth. I couldn’t and didn’t get it. :(

There are so many more little games and training routines on this little game, and after you complete each one, it logs in the time that you worked out:

Wii Will Get Fit. : wedding exercise Img 201This little birdy logged in 30 minutes yesterday. :) Perhaps it will be easier to motivate myself to play Wii Fit for 30 mins than it was to say go for a 30 minute jog? :) I realize the 30 minute jog probably is a better workout, but if I can motivate myself to ANY type of exercise everyday, that has to count for something right?

I’m curious because I’m lame and need video games to trick me into working out. How do you motivate yourself to work out and keep in shape?

I have to keep doing something different. I can’t buy a workout DVD or anything because three days in I’m tired of the routines and can’t get myself off the couch to do much of anything. I’m really excited to get Wii Fit (per my prediction yesterday, the fiance did not manage to get it while I was at work) because I’m hoping that the promise of unlocking new mini-games will keep me motivated enough that exercising becomes a habit even after I’ve unlocked everything.

I came home last night to find the Wii Fit in my house too! Amazingly I logged in 45mins!
I also could not for the life of me do the soccor game!! I loved that my score kept telling me I was unbalanced!!

What do I do to motivate myself? Hmmm. I set goals and write them out, I set up appts in my calendar with alarms which tell me it’s time to walk up the stairs and eat a peice of fruit. I read fitness mags and get motivated by the stories in them or I talk to my sister who lost 50lbs last year. I’ll admit it’s hard to stay motivated when the boy brings home 3 pints of Ben and Jerrys because “it was on sale!!!”
of course he loses weight eating cake and ice cream so he doesn’t worry about it!!

@Candi1024: I wish… at 19 years old, I was in shape! (I guess it is hard to see, but the Wii tells me I’m 37 in WiiFit years, not 31. :) )
@larnaye: He did! He loves it. I didn’t post any pictures of him on it though. He thought he looked funny (not that I didn’t!)

I got one yesterday! Woo-hoo. Hopefully I’ll actually use it regularly. I hate working out.

Sadly, my Wii Fit age is 41, though. But my BMI is 22, which is not so bad.

I was able to log in 32 minutes yesterday. I loved how Mr. Lovebird’s Mii was a little chubby, he got all upset and was like “It doesn’t take into account muscle damnit.” That soccer game was tough and so was the tight-rope.

I thinking of buying the Nintendo Wii just for this game! Sounds like it might be worth it!

I got mine yesterday, with the promise to myself that I would use it for a min of 30 minutes to a max of 1 hr everyday from here until the wedding. The 30 min days I will take the chubby dog for a 30 minute faced paced walk, after the initial slow 10 minute pee on everything part. My wii age was 30, which is only 2 years off my real age. I worked out for a half hour (I only counted what went into my little bank, so I did more because during the training I did what the trainer did too), and I am nice and good sore today. I have to say, I hate the tight rope, and the running in place thing was no fun without a sports bra.

Though Wii Fit sounds totally rad, we can’t justify the huge cost. We are not gamers and we wouldn’t use it for playing any other actual games. (I do still have my NES from 1990 hooked up, but the only time it gets used is when people come over and see it and are like, “Holy crap you still have that? Let’s play!”)

My motivational tool that has TOTALLY WORKED this past week: I printed out a color picture of my dress (at work) and laminated it at Kinko’s (<$2). I take it to the gym and put it face-down on the elliptical shelf, then when I’m flagging and want to quit, I flip it over. On Tuesday I wanted to bail after 15 minutes, which used to mean that I’d stay on until 0:30, but this tool helped me go for a whole hour! I was so proud.

I do feel like kind of a tool with that picture there for all to see, but there are a lot of other tools at my gym too. (I work out in the San Fernando Valley, home of p0rn stars. Seriously, you would not believe what these women wear. To the gym!)

I have a feeling a lot of us were attempting these WiiFit games last night!

Through some miracle of whatever, I am in the normal weight range and my WiiFit age is 27, only 2 years older than I am! Hooray! Unfortunately, the dude’s WiiFit age is 45…he’s 33 in real life. Oops. I think the real insult comes from the fact that he’s a former college athlete and I’ve never done a sport in my life.

Hopefully I can motivate myself to work out now, with all of these fun games!

FWIW, my WiiFit age was 34 the first time and 24 the second time, just because I did a different balance game that I was better at. So don’t be too upset if yours is high - it’s just a reflection of your performance on that one particular activity!

I HATE the tight rope game. I really hope I don’t have to do well on it to unlock more things…

To keep motivated, I think of the dress, the tropical honeymoon after and the dreaded swimsuit shopping to come! I have found that once I’m in a routine and working out regularly, it becomes habit rather than a slog to be endured. I’m also doing things I like - yoga, biking, rock climbing - which helps a ton.

The other things that have been incredibly motivating is finding someone (or multiple people) to check in with and share progress and to keep track. Food journals don’t really work for me, but a weekly workout journal is keeping me honest. Each week, aside from noting any exercise, I track my weight along with measurements. For a few weeks my weight was stable, but it wasn’t too discouraging because my measurements were changing. Every now and again I look back to the first week to see how far I’ve come.

The Wii sounds fun - good luck!

We have this now! I can’t wait to go home and try it. We are thinking of setting some goals for a tropical honeymoon if we can get in shape enough!

Mr. Lemon and I jumped into Wii Fit yesterday… and this morning I woke up and instead of doing my normal morning poses, I did Wii yoga instead. I really loved that I could reaffirm that I was balancing correctly, and it was really calming!
However… those strength excercises suck!!!

I don’t have a Wii :(
But FH and I signed up for the gym 2 months ago and it helped that we went together… After my break, when I went back to school, I got a Personal Trainer @ the gym (I totally talked them down on the price too!), now if I flake out on the gym I’m leaving someone else in the lurch - I even met her @ 5:30am this morning. The ONLY reason I actually went was b/c I knew she was meeting me there and I couldn’t leave her.

We got ours yesterday too and I logged in an hour on it! I rocked at the hula hoops (got 200 spins!) My fiance however got 80 (quite hilarious to see him trying that one!!!!) I’m a big fan of the yoga poses as well as some of the strength ones too. not a fan of tightrope walking, that one’s hard, as well as the table tilt one! Overall though it’s way fun and I’m hoping it will help me get the motivation I need to get out there and move!
