Another Dress Orgy Brought To You By Yours Truly
Last weekend, I took my mom out for a day at Nordstrom and whatever else the mall had to offer. I’ll have none of that matronly dress business for my mom! Rewearable cocktail dresses here we come. She’s the only peron I know who perhaps has more energy than me to do this - although you readers best know me as the bee who could hit up three or four bridal shops in one day and try on every single non-ballgown dress in each store (and then do it all over again later that week at new stores).
I was incapacitated the rest of the night and hit the pillow at 8 o’clock with a migraine. She, on the other hand, jumped in and out of dozens of dresses, then came back to my house to cook a roast and whip up dinner, then weeded my huge garden in under half an hour at dusk - this weeding task would have taken me the entire weekend.
I love this neckline on her. She has it in her head that you need cleavage pull off anything plunging or v-neck but I don’t think so! (better not since my dress has that neckline!)

The photo at left my mom is complaining the belt takes up half her body, middle is demonstrative that she needs petite sizes, and right, that strapless aint half bad!

This dress below was the most flattering on her, and made me warm up to the idea of using it as a bridesmaid dress, so I ordered it in four sizes yesterday….more on that note later…

My mom is really taken by this trapeze dress - because it’s so billowy she can fit into a size 2 or a size 0. I am all over twiggy-inspired dresses, but my only concern is she’ll look at photos from my wedding ten years from now and say, “what was I thinking?!”

Any other moms out there going for something other than the taffeta two piece jacket/dress?

My mom is wearing this:

I was hoping she’d wear something a little more age appropriate, but this dress is pretty darn cute either way, and she knows she’ll be able to wear it again, which, like to you, is very important to us!

PS - Did your mom pick a dress?
May 23rd, 2008 at 5:28 pm
she liked the black trapeze dress the best. i thought the black and white patterned dress look best on her. we agreed we’d keep looking
May 23rd, 2008 at 5:30 pm
The neckline on that green dress is so pretty, and that color is lovely on her…. did she not like that one? I also like the black one up top!
My mom just ordered a strapless 2-pieces dress and extra material…. she’s going to make (or have made) some non-spaghetti-straps with a little bit more support, and a jacket or wrap of some kind to wear during the ceremony. It was hard to find anything without a shapeless jacket!!!
May 23rd, 2008 at 5:35 pm
Ahh…I like the one you picked Miss M, too!
Haha. Maybe my mom will look back in horror when she sees herself in the trapeze dress she’s wearing…thats what she gets for wearing white to her daughters wedding

Your mom is so cute! I also love the way the green one looked on her. Oh well! Can’t wait to see what she ends up getting!
My mom will be avoiding the two piece taffeta look as well…she used to have really bad fashion sense when I was growing up (or maybe that was just the fault of the 80s/early 90s…high waisted tapered jeans anyone?). But she totally rocks her looks now! She’ll probably go for something fashionable and re-wearable but definitely memorable. No trapeze dresses though ;)…she still sticks to things that look good for her age.

Your mom is adorable. My mom is wearing the jacket/dress, but she’ll rock it. She’s gorgeous.
May 23rd, 2008 at 5:56 pm
I like the B&W dress too. You’re probably right about the trapeze dress– in a few years it will look like a pleated sack.
May 23rd, 2008 at 5:58 pm
this post is so cute–your mom is so cute!!! I think she, like you, looks lovely in just about every dress. personally I think she looks outsanding in the bright jewel tones. my mom wants to wear a purple taffeta ball gown to my wedding. yup. and I’m going to let her too!
May 23rd, 2008 at 6:03 pm
Your mom is ADORABLE! Like Miss Cupcake, I think the last green dress is really pretty and looks lovely on her.
I do think you also looks good in the trapeze dress, but agree that she may look back on that and think, why did I wear that? But mom’s BMs wore those 70’s yellow dresses w/ the hats and you just think, “Well that was the fashion back then.”
May 23rd, 2008 at 6:09 pm
love the neckline of the last dress (green)
May 23rd, 2008 at 6:12 pm
I love the edge of the red(ish) dress! I love the overall look of the black and white one you liked, and the neckline of the green one!
I hope you two are able to find something fitting and wonderful. You’re off to a great start
May 23rd, 2008 at 6:31 pm
The green dress is gorgeous! Did you find that at Nordstrom?
May 23rd, 2008 at 6:42 pm
She looks gorgeous in the green dress!
May 23rd, 2008 at 6:52 pm
the green is wonderful!!
May 23rd, 2008 at 6:59 pm
The green dress looks very cute. This is a great posting. It reminds me of all the crazy dress shopping my mom for months did when my brother got married. She must have sent me three to five pictures each week. This time, she seems to be more efficient with the buying and returning but still sends me pictures.

Haha! I’m a big believer in the notion that having no cleavage is better when it comes to plunging necklines. I think in general, my A-cup boobs mean I can show more skin without looking like a slut.
May 23rd, 2008 at 7:16 pm
I am really loving the last one (green)!
May 23rd, 2008 at 7:21 pm
your mom is sooo pretty!
at this point i’m not that picky…i just want her to start looking. she is unconvinced that it will take her long to find the dress, but i’ve banned granny dresses from the nuptials (at least for her, i have no control over my fmil) and i think its going to take some time to find something hot, plus sized, in an awesome color for a bargain.
sigh…..
May 23rd, 2008 at 7:34 pm
your mother is gorgeous.. i do like the black vneck and black trapeze, but the vneck probably is more timeless
May 23rd, 2008 at 7:35 pm
What cute dresses! But I’m definitely with you on the black and white one.
My mom is wearing this really pretty purple chiffon number for my outdoor-late summer in the south- somewhat casual wedding:

green dress = wow factor.
grey and black dress looks comfortable/flattering.
May 23rd, 2008 at 7:47 pm
I love the black V-neck one on her, and the red one! I have major boobage and could never wear as low a V as the black dress… I think she looks great. The hem of the red dress is great and the color is beautiful on her.
As for what my mom is wearing, that’s not fully decided yet, but I think she might do some kind of pants. My brother just got married in November and my mom *had* to wear a dress (my brother is Orthodox Jewish), and she’s just not a dress kind of lady even though she looked gorgeous. Since our wedding is more casual and not Orthodox, I thought it would be nice if she had the pants option. She absolutely hates thinking about clothes and shopping, though, so I’ll probably end up picking something out for her!
May 23rd, 2008 at 7:48 pm
I love the neckline of the trapeze dress on her.
Maybe she could find a top with that neckline and pair it with a flattering skirt?
JMO, but half the fun of looking at old pics is giggling and pointing at the dated fashions, so she should wear what makes her feel pretty now.

My Mom is 57 and wearing the dress from Nordies in the link below. I am afraid she will look better than me!

Gerby, that dress is SO nice! Definitely appropriate for mom, but still young and sexy!!
Oh and I have to agree with many others above on 2 points: 1. I think the green dress looks great on your mom - who is seriously beautiful, by the way - and 2. the trapeze dress indeed carries serious potential for regret down the line…
May 24th, 2008 at 3:44 am
the black one looked great on her and from what i saw the blue flower one is very cute.
May 24th, 2008 at 8:37 am
no to the trapeze please, it’s not flattering at all! I’m with the others about the lovely green gown and the black v-neck - stunning!
May 24th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
LOVE the green one; so much so that I’m dying to see if it would be a good fit for our rehearsal dinner. Do you by any chance know the designer?
May 24th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
The neckline on the last one, the green one, is stunning on her!
I don’t love the trapeze dress on her, but ultimately whatever she feels the most comfortable and beautiful in is the one she should pick!
May 25th, 2008 at 1:36 am
i searched the entire petite section of nordstrom.com and even did a search of “green dress” and nothing came up! i’m sorry!
May 25th, 2008 at 1:39 am
Your mom is totally adorable…and I agree again with the majority that the green dress def stands out on her.
May 25th, 2008 at 11:55 pm
green dress!
May 26th, 2008 at 3:17 am
Thanks, Miss Milkshake––I tried the same thing and nothing. Darn, it is gorgeous!
May 26th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
The green dress is gorgeous!!
May 26th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
I have always said, I really want everyone (including me and my fiancé) to look really fashionable at our wedding, because it will be so fun to look back and cringe! Then we will be so proud already we were married long enough that our clothes went out of fashion - he he!
I love the dress you’re thinking of for bridesmaids, by the way. And your mum is a sweetie for guesting on Weddingbee with her dress search
May 26th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
I love the green one on her!!
May 27th, 2008 at 11:24 am
aren’t Filipino moms the cutest… and most stubborn?! I’m still trying to figure out how to convince my mother not to wear something of her own choosing, as her fashion taste has been hit (or MISS) since I was a kid. We live across the country from each other so this is a bit of a challenge! Oh, and I bet the blue and white flowered dress is super cute from the front!
May 28th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
That green dress is fabulous!
