Mr. Cookie’s Big Secret!

May 27th, 2008 @ 5:15 pm by Mrs. Cookie

I don’t wear a lot of jewelry. I am a very simple person, and the only piece of jewelry I wear on a consistent basis is a simple metal bracelet with “Simplify” inscribed into the band – my personal motto. Needless to say, I wanted a very simple engagement ring.

When Mr. Cookie started to slyly ask questions about what I wanted for an engagement ring, I told him my dream ring was the Tiffany and Co. signature setting – a single round cut solitaire. Simple, elegant and completely me!

Now, did I think I was going to get a Tiffany’s engagement ring? Absolutely not! Mr. Cookie is a finance man. I can empathize with Miss Coconut about a thrifty fiancé, because Mr. Cookie is bound and determined to get our student loan and mortgage debt paid off within the next five years – this sometimes makes for very interesting discussions about the wedding and money. But back to the engagement ring - I never imagined Mr. Cookie would contemplate spending a lot on my ring.

When I initially moved back to Colorado from DC, Mr. Cookie would make very small references to an engagement ring, always when we were shopping at a mall. Nine months prior to Mr. Cookie proposing, he took me to a random jewelry store at a mall and asked the saleswomen to measure for my ring size. Then, a few months later he asked if I wanted white gold or platinum while driving back from a mall. It was these random little discussions about the ring that always kept me guessing when he was going to propose.

During July and August of last year Mr. Cookie was working a lot of late nights. One night in the end of August, it was about 7:00pm in the evening, and I hadn’t heard a word from him. Usually when he is working late, I get a phone call, so I got a little worried. I started calling him about every 15 minutes, “Just wondering where you are at. Call me?” Finally, at 8:30pm, I hear his car pull into the driveway. He comes through the door all apologetic with a lame story about how he got called into a late meeting, left his phone on his desk, and forgot it at work. Although, completely uncharacteristic of Mr. Cookie, I totally bought it – hook, line, and sinker!

Now, fast forward to our trip to Europe — we are in Paris and Mr. Cookie is down on knee. As he opens the box, there it was! Sorry to be anticlimactic, it wasn’t Tiffany’s, but three beautiful round cut diamonds in a platinum setting. Although not the dream ring, I absolutely love it! I actually love it more than the Tiffany solitaire! I think it is simple, elegant, and even more completely me!

I have to give Mr. Cookie major props for the ring. He picked it out all by himself! Besides the small references here and there, he kept the whole ring buying process a complete secret. And yes, after he proposed he fessed up; he wasn’t in a late night meeting, oh no, he was buying the ring. He had it hidden in our house for a month without me even knowing, and traveled through airport security and three countries before placing it on my finger. So, without further ado, my ring…

Now, Mr. Cookie and I are starting to look for wedding rings. Being the simple jewelry cookie that I am, what would you suggest?

It’s beautiful! Like you, my dream ring was also that tiffany-setting, but I ended up with tanzanite with three little diamonds on each side (my choice entirely, I changed my mind!) I’m not a bling girl, so my chosen wedding band is a thin white gold band, the same width as the band part of my e-ring. Simple and elegant! I think it’s 1.5 mm.

I too am a less is more kinda gal. I think a simple platinum or white gold band would look fab. If that’s too simple then how about something like Mrs. Snail’s wedding band.

I’m the same way with jewelry and wanted a very simple asscher cut diamond solitaire with a thin band. My fiancee ended up going the three stone route too. Two small round, and an asscher center. I adore my ring. We are having a band custom made to fit against my engagement ring. It will be the same thickness, white gold, very simple and beautiful, but no more bling! I’m so excited to see it all together (it is actually currently in the “shop” and due back next week)

My fiance actually almost got caught up in security because he had the ring in his pocket - it’s a good thing I was distracted long enough to explain to the security guard that he was going to propose to me! He let FH right through after that!

Mine is also a 3 stone ring. I think it’s simple, elegant, and ultimately classy!! i’m going to get a plain platinum band since my ring is so beautiful and don’t want more diamonds to distract it. I want to enhance it. great job to the boys!

My ring is a single round cut solitairen(looks like the one you posted, but not Tiffany) - I love how simple it is and I do not wear any jewelry at all except for it. Honestly, I don’t even want a wedding band - I think it would take away from the engagement ring and don’t want another piece of jewelry. When I tell my family this they freak out…hopefully I’m not the only one going this route.

Someone posted a link on the boards of a 3 stone ring with a plain Tiffany knife edge band, and I think it could look perfect with your ring if you want simple: http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=52277

Or if you wanted a little more bling here is another option: http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=23188

Ahh you are my e-ring twin! I can’t believe we have the same ring. Where did your FI get it?
Anyways I purchased my wedding band and I went with a band that has 5 small diamonds on the top that slightly curve around the 3 stone e-ring. I can take a pic of it if you want. I just tried looking online and I can’t find it but here is something similar.

@louisvillegirl: Ironically, Mr. Cookie got my e-ring at Shane Co.

louisvillegirl says:

Yup that is exactly where mine is from too! He picked out a stone that was in Denver to complete the ring…how ironic!
Don’t you love love love it? :) It is very much my taste as well.
Aww I am happy I found my ring twin. I am anxious to find out what you pick as a wedding band. I had a tough time as well because it is such a unique shape.
Good luck!

Aw, it’s beautiful! How funny, I wanted something just like your ring, but ended up with something just like the Tiffany one (which my fiancé also chose himself) but I too ended up loving my ring, partly just because he chose it :)

Congratulations! Would you care to share your story with us on our new blog, blog.mervisdiamond.com? It doesn’t matter that the ring is from Tiffany’s. We still love you and want to hear the proposal story.
