My Dress Is Done!

May 27th, 2008 @ 4:21 pm by Mrs. Hummingbird

Okay, usually I try to do some sort of creative title for my posts, but today, well, screw it because my dress is done! I swear there are no more beautiful words in the world than those magical four. The process started way back in January, so the idea that this crazy and elaborate thing my lovely seamstress was making for me would some day actually be mine seemed almost unreal for a while.

But now, it has been completed and I love it. Like the necklace I bought from Meg Leigh, I luuurve it. It is so awesome that, after the wedding, I could picture myself wearing it on a continuing basis a la Miss Havisham (without the bitterness and tragedy). It is so pretty that, if my dress were a man, like Chef on South Park used to sing, I would lay it down by the fire and make sweet love to it. It is so kick ass that, if my dress were a prize fighter, it would knock out all the other dresses I tried on. It is so awesome that it has made me silly beyond all reason, but I don’t care because I am too happy!

So, ladies of the hive, after months of work and several crazy dress posts, I present to you Miss Hummingbird’s wedding dress!

(As is always the case when it comes to dress posts, I am inserting the standard “Honey don’t look!” request right here. Mr. Hum, if you’re reading, please know that if you click onward in the post, there will be dire consequences.)

Oh, see now you’ve looked and you’ve turned me into an old crone. See what I said about dire consequences!

Okay, ladies, now that he’s gone we can get down to business and to the good stuff. Here you go:

FinalDress1
Me in the finished gown.

FinalDress2
A shot from the back.
(Hummingbird booty!)

FinalDress3
Another shot from the back as I do the Tyra approved “booty tooch.”

FinalDress4
Me sassin’ it up front-wise.

FinalDress5
Don’t just stand there, let’s get to it, strike a pose, there’s nothing to it!
((VOGUE!))

FinalDress6
A closer shot of the dress front
(and my boobs apparently. Dang that bra works!)

FinalDress7
Again, the dress front at a slightly different angle
(the girls seem to have mellowed slightly between shots.)

FinalDress8
The bottom of the dress
(We’re getting married outdoors, but my seamstress Allison put a little whisper of a train on for me.)

FinalDress9
Closer shot of the back.

FinalDress10
Detail shot of the flared skirt.

FinalDress11
Me doing a sit test on the bed
(You can see a bit of the scalp burn I acquired during my outdoor bridal shower, which I will blog about later this week. Sadly, ribbon hats do not protect against harmful UV rays.)

FinalDress12
A shot of me making a silly face and laughing
(you can even catch a glimpse of my awesome silver shoes!)

Having now gone through the entire custom dress process, I have nothing but good things to say about it. Being a very tall girl, it was nice to get something that was long enough for once and I loved that I could talk to the person who worked on the dress and make changes if I wanted to.

Plus, my seamstress, Allison, is an amazing person. Not only is her work great, but she totally held my hand when I freaked out about things and gave me some honest and good advice when we were in the early stages of dress construction. It was funny, I think both of us got a little emotional once the process was completed. She got a little teary eyed handing the dress over to me and on the way home with my dress bag, although I was thrilled and excited to have my dress in my hands, I felt a little melancholy because I really enjoyed my fittings with her.

Anyway, my dress is currently in my FFIL’s closet awaiting my return in a month, but I’ve got to say, I’m jonesing to put it on again because I love it so much.

To tide me over while I wait for our wedding day, I’ve got to know - does anyone else have a serious crush on their dress? Give me some gown gossip!

(P.S. I’m broadcasting on BeeTV on Wednesday at 8PM EST so pop by and say hello!)

Oh my gawd! I’m so happy for you! My dress won’t be ready until June 30th! I know once I get all the alterations done, I’m going to secretly wear it any chance I get when no one is home! LOL

Your dress is stunning!!! You look so beautiful in it and the joy really radiates across your face!

I also have a serious crush on my wedding oufit. As uber-lame as it sounds, I feel like a princess in it (an Indian princess, that is).

Ooh - you’re making me sooo excited to start this process myself. I too love my seamstress and have a feeling it’ll be an emotional trip for both of us as well.

And your dress? GORGEOUS!

I don’t even know you, and that dress just looks like it suits you SO perfectly, besides fitting you absolutely AMAZINGLY!!! I love it. The neckline and back-V are gorgeous, and the boobage is freakin’ hot… but not old-relative-scaringly-so. :-) Gorgeous!! Yay! Congrats! Exclamation points!!!!! (And by the way, isn’t it so exciting as a tall girl to *finally* have something that’s the right length?)

Wow, you look gorgeous. And that is some bra. Is it available in the U.S.? I’ll have to google it. I have a plunging neckline, too, and I’d love to work it like a Hummingbird. Also, did you buy up or down when you bought the Ubra? (I ask because I’m either a 36B or a 34C depending on the brand.)

Smokn’…..way to work that dress and bod. You look absolutely stunning!

I’m <3′ing both my dresses. Yup - two dresses. My wedding dress has a similar silhouette as your dress (I hope I’ll look as hot in my dress as you do in yours)…which reminds me, I should schedule my fittings soon.

I just picked up my cheongsam for the Chinese tea ceremony this weekend =) I love it because it is not in traditional red but rather it is creamy gold with embroidered red, blue, green and purple peonies/chrysanthemums and a red piping along the edges. Thanks mom for helping me pick it out and for telling me that there was no need for the dress to be in red.

Dude! Whatever bra you are wearing is totally awesome! Is it the u-bra? I tried the u-bra, but alas, my girls are too small for the u-bra to really work it’s magic. :(

Argh… I visited the website, and my girls are too gargantuan for the u-bra. :-( Seems that Miss Hum really *is* Goldilocks! (Or her girls are Goldilockses. Or something.)

Thank you so much for the incredibly sweet compliments ladies! You are all too kind. *blushes*
@GorgesViola: I know, eh? Everything normal is too short if you’re over 6 feet tall.
@Caroline: I am not 100 per cent sure if it is available in the states. I am a 34B so that is what I got. Because of the fit, I might be inclined to go towards your upper size, but if you have the opportunity, try it on because lift is crazy!
@Summer2008: It is the U Bra, you guessed right. If it didn’t work for you and you’re looking for something similar, I tried on another similarly styled bra at The Eaton Centre Bay in Toronto. So if you’re looking for something similar, it’s worth a shot to check there since they have a decent specialty lingerie section.

Holy massive mammaries Batman! (My Robin line is more authentic)

You know in a prison somewhere that one of those photos just joined the ranks of the inmates’ spank bank!

I think Ben is going to be a drooling mess when he sees you in the dress for the first time. Then he will probably “trip” into your dirty pillows, hey at least it will be a soft landing, and this will be the footage from the wedding you embarrass your future spawn with when they bring home their bride or groom to be.

You look so giddy & beautiful. Your dress is so beautiful on you. Wonderbra’s got nothing on the U Bra. Yowza! They should pay you to be a spokeswoman for their bras. Sounds like you’ve converted half the hive.

@zombiebride: Aw! You’re the cutest! Now you’re making me tear up . . . it’s a vicious cycle!
@Alex: Thank you for using the phrase “spank bank” in reference to my wedding dress. :P
@Miss Coconut: My dress appreciates the flattery, but unfortunately is a one woman garment. :)
@chibride: I know, right? I think my jugs have launched a pretty serious buying campaign for them. LOL.

You look STUNNING. I know everyone has already said that, but WOW!!! I love your dress! And since my hubby to be is a “boobs guy” I want to go for the same sort of va-va-voom factor! :)

I’m also thinking of going the custom route… could you PLEASE PM me the details of the designer?!

Your dress is absolutely gorgeous!
Very flattering. I have gone on a custom-made route for all my dresses. But I may ‘need’ one for my reception in August. Would it be possible to forward me her information also?
I live in the Toronto area. I would be grateful

@Erin & @Jaimie: A friend actually made my dress for me as a gift and she’s not taking any more clients at the moment as she has two young children. I do however have a friend who is a fashion designer in Toronto who might be able to help, depending on what you’re looking for. Her name is Ashley and her website is http://www.provocouture.com

@Cassandra: My seamstress and I kind of experimented with the broadcloth to a certain extent before we got the style right, so I sadly do not have a pattern I can direct you to, but the style was based on Monique Lhuillier’s Miranda
(It is the first dress pictured in my post here:http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/01/21/the-hummingbird-weddingbee-dress-saga-part-2/). Good luck!
