About Mrs. Cookie

My Own Personal Cary Grant

May 29th, 2008 @ 8:30 am by Mrs. Cookie

Too often, the focus of wedding attire is solely on what the bride will wear and not the groom. Like the bride, I think the groom’s attire has equal weight in revealing the groom’s personality and setting the tone for the wedding. From a Hawaiian shirt and shorts at a beach wedding to a tux with a bowtie at a more formal wedding – anything is possible! Lately, Mr. Cookie and I have been discussing his wedding attire.

On one of our first dates, we went to this French restaurant in the Adams Morgan part of DC. I distinctly remember Mr. Cookie wearing this very handsome blue dress shirt, and as he was dapperly leaning back in his chair the image of Cary Grant flashed in my mind. The icon of the charismatic, debonair man — I can’t think of a better inspiration for Mr. Cookie’s attire than Cary Grant. Not that I think brides and grooms have to be matchy-matchy, but with my modern, old Hollywood look and Mr. Cookie’s homage to Cary Grant, I think the two are a perfect combination.

The best way to describe our overall wedding tone is rustic, elegance, which has the option of the groom’s attire being either semi-formal or formal. Therefore, Mr. Cookie has the option of a suit or tuxedo. I found these two images of Cary Grant above, one in a suit and one in a tux. Which one do you like best? Let’s take a vote? Suit? Tux?

I have no opinion on your question. I just want to thank you for letting me wake up and pop the laptop open to a picture of Cary.

**swoon**

How about a nice black suit with bow tie? It’s a little more formal than a long tie/suit, and the bow tie is very Cary Grant, but he can still wear his own suit (unless he owns a tux?) Something he owns will have a much nicer fit and will be higher quality. I bet Mr. Grant would not wear rented attire ;)

suit all the way. I think unless you are truly having a formal wedding tuxes seem out of place in most weddings…esp. when the rest of the guests aren’t dressed in formal attire. I think the suit will be more comfy as well.

Cary Grant can wear anything! ;)

But, to try to assist you in your dilemma, I think a suit is the most versatile option. My husband wore a very dark navy suit and I really think he still looked fairly formal and completely in keeping with the look of our hotel ballroom wedding.

My husband wanted to wear a tuxedo b/c he rarely gets the chance to and this would be the perfect occasion to do so. Along the same line of thinking, we ended up making the wedding black-tie.

I love a man in a tux and bow tie! I also think it makes the event feel a little more special for him. He can wear a suit any day, but how often does he get an excuse to wear a tuxedo? It depends on the vibe of the event and what he is comfortable in, too.

Nice inspiration pics… I like both!

The very top pictures made my heart skip a beat. When I think of my favorite Cary Grant moments, he is almost always in a dark suit, but the tux is nice too.
I’d try a dark suit with a bow tie. There is always the risk of looking more dork than smooth. I think we might need to see Mr.Cookie to make a fair judgement :)

Both are great - but what does Mr Cookie want? I wanted Mr Trebuchet to make that decision, since he is the one wearing it, and he loved being in charge of it.

Tux! My fiance wanted to go with a bow tie, but it just didn’t look right, but I say if you can pull it off go for it! :)

I will never pass up the chance to see my gorgeous FH in a tux. He’ll wear suits over and over again in the next 50 years but the tux is something special and boy, does he look good in it!

Suit! Especially if Mr. Cookie has a hard to fit body like my guy and a rented tux just wont look right. Plus, his job doens’t require him to be in a suit and tie.

Mmmmm….Cary Grant…phwoaaarrrr…

I THINK I like the suit more, but it’s hard to tell because he looks so dang good in everything!

I want to say suit b/c I’m all about a suit over a tux. Suit suit suit. Buuuuut, that said, your dress is sooooo elegant and beautiful that I kind of think it needs that tux next to it. Hmm.

Suit. A great suit will totally pull of the rustic elegance look you are going for. A tux, not so rustic.

Suit all the way, but I do have to admit some bias - we just picked out a suit for FI to wear. We were having the same question as to what to wear and decided to splurge on a nice suit rather than bother renting a tux. FI doesn’t ever really have to wear a suit, but it’s always a good idea to have one nice one in case of other weddings, job interviews, fancy dates… :) The suit comes back from the tailor this week - we can’t wait!

I’m a suit girl…
…but with old Hollywood, I’m thinkin’ a tux would look awesome!
