Registry Gripes and Grumps

May 29th, 2008 @ 5:26 pm by Mrs. Jasmine

I’m in a grumpy mood today because of a court appearance that didn’t go quite the way I intended (as a lawyer, not a defendant, thank goodness!). Anyway, don’t these people know that I’m getting married soon and my priorities are all askew? :) I’ve decided to channel my case of the grumps into something for the greater good. Here are a list of my registry gripes and grumps: hopefully this will help some of you who are considering what stores to choose for your own registry. And so I’m not a complete shrew in this post, I’ve listed the number one pro of each store.

(1) Crate & Barrel: No Thank You Manager!?!?
WTF Crate & Barrel? It is so bizarre to me that one of the most popular stores for wedding registries lacks a thank you manager. So far, I’ve found the thank you manager to be a really indispensable resource and it’s so annoying that Crate & Barrel lacks an easy way to manage who sent you what.
BUT…Crate & Barrel has such a great variety of items at different price points.

(2) Macy’s: Your Item is Backordered…Yet Again
After receiving emails that my china, my Le Creuset ramekins, and my sheets were all back-ordered, my patience began to run thin. How is it that so many things are backordered? Granted, Macy’s does warn buyers that certain gifts will take XYZ days to ship, but it’s still irritating to receive an email telling me that I won’t receive one of my gifts for another three months! Do I wait until then to send a thank you card?
BUT…People seem to really love the Macy’s registry and things go on sale very frequently.

(3) Bloomingdales: Here is your teeny-tiny registry item packed in an unconscionable amount of packing peanuts
Actually the customer service at Bloomingdales has been pretty exemplary, so my beef is somewhat minor. Why is everything from this store swimming in a redonkulous amount of packing peanuts? I’m honestly afraid to open Bloomingdales gifts for fear that I will open the package and quickly suffocate to death from an overwhelming deluge of packing peanuts. It’s not a very green way of shipping and it’s seems so unnecessary and wasteful.
BUT…Bloomingdale’s has the most beautiful selection of home decor and their customer service has been above and beyond.

What are your registry gripes? Commiserate with me! :)

the bloomingdales packing peanuts are biodegradable so its pretty “green”.

my BIGGEST gripe is the same as yours: the lack of thank you manager for crate&barrel registries. i’m actually having my gifts sent elsewhere so I need my in laws to open and check each gift so I can send a thank you card to the appropriate person. VERY annoying!

@Amy: Ooh that is good to know. That makes me feel much better about all those peanuts!

One of your gripes is actually a good thing for me — the Thank You Manager has been my biggest vice lately! I’m a full-fledged registry stalker and I’m totally ruining the surprise. It’s awful. Though I can understand how the Thank You Manager definitely comes in handy, it’s a good thing that our Lowes registry doesn’t come with it (but how am I going to find out who on earth got us that vacuum?!).

AliCherri1 says:

@rebecca: OOooo someone got you your vacuum! NICE! I’m totally registering for one, but not b/c I think someone will buy it for me, b/c then I can get it w/ the discount.
Oh Grips… HATE Macy’s - Always have Always will, unless the some how get the Customer Service under control… LOVE BLOOMIES!

1) Macy’s - everything that I want to add to my registry online is “not available for online registry”. WTF?

2) Macy’s in-store scanners suck donkey ballz once you’ve just come from using C&B’s scanners.

3) Limited color options online as well as instore for items like KitchenAid Mixers.

Kirsten says:

If I had a C&B Thank you manager - I’d totally be registry stalking. So maybe it is good that they do not have one.
RE: Macy’s - They’re items are CONSTANTLY backordered or they get discountinued. I recently ordered a bunch of plates for a friend who is getting marriend and some of the plates shipped and while some were backoreded they were “discontinued”. Macys sent me an emailing saying my CC would be refunded, but will the person know I ordered them 5 serving plates and 2 were returned?

nowiknow says:

Ahaha- you use redonkulous! Yesss! I thought I was the only one :) That’s fantastic.

As for your question- we have not yet registered & as such, I have no gripes.

I hope everything gets better for you, registry-wise, though!

MACY’S: Land of the “we mark everything up so that we can put it on a big sale” makes us feel guilty listing a $300 comforter and other over-priced items and leaving us feeling like we should scan the ads everyday and update our guests when one of our items is on “sale” so that they don’t have to. Macy’s has also been frustrating because they only carry their own lines (aside from china, which is why we registered with them) so we can’t really get what we want (we’re choosy cooks), and because they don’t have high-end items or practical everyday items, just the stuff in between.

Our region leaves us with few choices. Unfortunately no Bloomingdales, which sounds like the best. We also registered at a local kitchen chain thinking that we’d get better products and options, but that hasn’t really been the case. We should have gone with Crate and Barrel, but too late now. Sigh… Gift registry was by far the most disappointing part of the wedding planning.

Thank you managers? I’ve never heard of this wondrous feature!

We’re registered at Macy’s and BBB, and I have never seen anything like a “Thank You Manager” link or anything at either site… perhaps they don’t have them either? …But your post makes me think that Macy’s does? Am I that clueless?

Macy’s registry completely scared me. I signed up, figuring our east coast relatives would have an easy time with it, but ended up canceling that plan. You can only manage a little bit online. They force you to meet with a person in-store to ‘help’ you. I’m not a professional registry expert, but I think I can manage to figure out what I want/need on my own, thank you very much. When we didn’t come in, we got the scariest email from our super perky Bridal Consultant, who was pushing a rewards program that required a Macy’s card. The perks - 5% reward on gift purchases from your registry, but there are exceptions (of course).

*sigh*

We’re using a non-traditional online registry so we can pull items from anywhere online or off line, but did create a C&B registry so we can get the 10% off should we need to fill out our place settings, glassware or flatware. :)

I completely agree with how frustrating Macys is. We registered there as well and over 50% of our registry was back ordered. I ended up with quite a few gift cards from there (our wedding was destination) so I dumped most of the items after the wedding and used the discount for what was most important. CB and Pottery Barn are definitely the way to go.

Nothing but true love for our Bed Bath & Beyond registry. It was completely easy to set up on line, and one of the guys who works in our local store has gone way above and beyond the call of duty in helping us out when we want to use gift cards to get things for ourselves off the registry (and also added the one set of accent plates from a different setting that we couldn’t add online ourselves). Also LOVE the 20% coupons that you can get here, there and everywhere!

Our other registry is Pottery Barn, which I’ve overall been very happy with, but it has the same problem as Bloomie’s — beelyuns and beelyuns of those packing peanuts! (That said, one of our platters arrived chipped, and I just took it to our local store and they gave me a brand-new unchipped one with absolutely no hassle whatsoever.)

LOL. Ok, when I first read it with my brain not fully dialed in, I was thinking a “Thank you manager” was some sort of up-sucky HR liason in charge of bridal registries, and making sure brides were happy.

I was all, omg, Miss Jasmine is such a princess!

Amazon is great, except they also have the problem of shipping you a pair of salad tongs in a box filled with newspaper that is 2 feet by 1.5 feet by 1 foot — huge and wasteful!

LeahB says:

Great post! The only reason I wanted to register at Pottery Barn was because I wanted their towels. I am VERY picky about my towels and once I felt theirs, I knew I had to have them. Well guess what, they are now discontinued and my wedding isn’t September, so we haven’t gotten any of our precious towels!! Same goes for our shower curtain and any of the other stuff I loved. ARGH!

Can’t say enough good things about Michael C. Fina (which holds all your gifts at the warehouse until you release them — perfect for us city girls w/ limited space) and Williams-Sonoma. So far so good!!

Kohl’s - WTF? I hate you! I decided to kick you to the curb! My registry at Kohl’s was very buggy. When I first registered at the store, I went home, looked online to see an empty registry. I called the store, they tried adding an item to my registry to see what would happen….. apparently the system was down and when it came up I found out what they tried adding to my registry: a Santa Claus gift bag….. that was stuck there. When I would be in edit mode, it wouldn’t appear, but in guest mode? There it was! It took a long time before I could get someone from customer service to remove it. I had items disappear that I never deleted. I had things appear in the wrong quantity in guest view but showed correctly in edit view. They wasted my time after 2 scan guns when I visited the store a second time to add more stuff….. you can’t add anything to your registry at the store with the exception when you start the registry at the store. How does that make sense? A lot of my stuff was clearanced out. My FSIL was registered at Kohl’s and they wouldn’t remove the items from her registry (after my Mom handed her the registry paper) stating they didn’t have UPCs (they did have UPCs and if they were able to scan and charge my Mom for the items……). The final straw was when they told my FMIL that my dishes would not be clearanced any time soon since it’s a new style….. sure enough, that was a lie! It took me forever to be able to track down the set at each Kohl’s.

Target - What are you thinking with that ridiculous return policy???? I’ve had items magically appear on my registry and I’ve had items appear in the wrong quantity. When I first tried to register, the lady at customer service lied and told me I had to write each UPC symbol down on a piece of paper and when I was done, enter each one in the kiosk…… and then I saw another customer scanning things to her registry! Some of the items purchased from my Target registry for my engagement party were never properly updated as fulfilled. And their return policy! Even if you have a registry there and the item is on your registry, if you need to exchange or return something they will NOT do it unless you have a receipt or gift receipt. So they tend not to properly update registries when an item has been bought, a duplicate gift could be their fault, but if you don’t have a receipt, you’re SOL. But you are allowed to return one item per year without a receipt if it’s under $20. Big whoop! And no, the registry doesn’t act as a receipt. I emailed customer service to question their return policy with registries….. in essence… it sucks! I got rid of that registry.

BB&B - NO PROBLEMS WHAT SO EVER! :)

Åmazon.com - One tiny issue…. I ordered registry cards to give to my MOH…. got the canned “Thank you for registering at Amazon.com, enclosed is your free registry cards” and there was nothing else in the envelope. :-P

I blogged about my registries and our various troubles with each one. I’m surprised by Jodi’s experience with Target, because I thought that one was the best — but then, I never set foot in a store, so that probably helps. Having a really good online interface was the most important thing to me. On that front, I had the most trouble with BB&B and Macy’s. (I have nothing good to say about Macy’s, except that I’m glad I never went there in person, because that sounds even worse than their ridiculous “Wedding Channel” website.)
