About Mrs. Cupcake

Klutzy Bride

May 30th, 2008 @ 1:49 pm by Mrs. Cupcake

Hive, I have a confession to make: I am an incredibly klutzy person. It’s rare if a day goes by that I don’t trip on something, drop something, break something, or spill something on myself. Mr. Cupcake is constantly rolling his eyes and asking “are you okay?” or moving my water glass away from the edge of the table for fear that I’ll smack it and spill it all over the place. (It’s been known to happen…. More than once.) I am a Grade A, Certified Klutz.

Last April (on Friday the 13th, nonetheless) I took quite a terrifying spill down half a flight of stairs in our apartment. It happened as if it was in slow motion, and the whole time I was tumbling, I was thinking to myself “this is, by far, the stupidest thing I have ever done.” (Klunk!) Unfortunately, it was a combination of me rushing down the stairs in heels because I was late for work and having my arms full that lead me to fall down the stairs with nothing to hold onto. Luckily, the bag on each shoulder also prevented me from injuring my hands, wrists or head and are probably the reason I didn’t do somersaults down the stairs. I did manage to break my middle toe, but overall, it could have been much worse (although, over a year later, I still have what I endearingly refer to as a BFT — that’s Big Fat Toe).

Last October, Mr. Cupcake and I had one marathon weekend of two weddings (one on Saturday, one on Sunday). Both were in Central Pennsylvania so we stayed at his parents’ house for the weekend. A few days before we went, I decided that I shouldn’t wear my same ol’ standby wedding-guest-dress to both weddings, so I found myself a second dress to bring for the weekend. Good thing, because five minutes before we had to leave for wedding #1 (as I was rushing — shocker — to put my makeup on), I dropped my lipstick and it conveniently fell straight down the front of me and left some pretty ridiculous marks down the length of my dress. So, I ended up having to wear the same dress to both weddings after all!

I’ve also had some recent incidents of klutziness that make me immediately think of the wedding — like a few weeks ago when I burnt my knuckle on my left hand while taking an english muffin out of the toaster oven at work. Yup, that’s gonna leave a mark that will probably still be there in September. And the constant cuts on my legs from shaving…. I’m going to have to explore alternative methods of hair removal in the week leading up to the wedding, so I’m not covered in band-aids on the wedding day!

Needless to say, I am a little nervous about Klutzy Cupcake making an appearance on the wedding day. I mean, really, are the Wedding Gods trying to kill me? Whose brilliant idea was it to make a girl wear a white, floor-length dress for an entire day? A day that involves wine, lipstick, and cake, all things that I am likely to spill or drop at some point. I am also a little terrified about any part of the day that involves stairs, because as we all know, stairs and I don’t really get along so well. If I’m not falling down them, I’m tripping as I walk up them.

There are usually two big factors behind my clumsiness: feeling tired, and feeling rushed. This reminds me that I need to make sure to get plenty of sleep leading up to the wedding, and I’m also going to have to be pretty liberal when creating the wedding day timeline with my DOC to build in lots of extra time so I never feel rushed.

Are you a klutzy bride like me? What precautions are you taking to make sure you don’t embarrass yourself with any clumsy antics on your wedding day? (Or, is it just a lost cause??)

That whole thing sounds like a page from my life! I too have broken a toe from rushing, and just last weekend I had a black and white dress on for my FI’s master’s graduation and less than 10 minutes of wearing it spilled coffee all down the front of it- unfortunately for me we were in the car and I couldn’t change. I run into door frames, break everything imagineable (we have 6 wine glasses left in the house-all from different sets) and cut myself cooking (the latest actually cut through my finger nail!). I feel your pain. Can you scotch guard a wedding dres?!

You crack me up cupcake! I like to think I’m not to klutzy, but I did take a spill down a couple of steps a couple of months back. A combination of bad slippers and rushing to open the door! Although, now come to think of it, I bruise like a peach and would hate to be all black and blue for the wedding. It would be silly to wrap myself in bubble wrap until the wedding right?

I am the biggest klutz that ever klutzed! If there is something for me to knock my knee/elbow/finger/foot/insert appendage on, I will do it. I refuse to wear heels for fear of injury - and still manage to trip wearing flats. If I’m carrying something, it will be dropped.

I am constantly, CONSTANTLY doing something klutzy, so I feel your pain Miss Cupcake. In fact, my fiance affectionately (I think) refers to me as “Cone Zone.”

I’ve got an underdeveloped muscle in my right foot that leads me to trip often as I walk, since I can’t pull my foot all the way back (as you do every time you walk, without even thinking about it!).

As a kid, this meant stubbing my toes a lot (ouch!), tripping on concrete (Ouch!) and occassionally rolling down the stairs like a meatball after losing my footing (OUCH!).

As an adult, it means regularly answering the “Are you okay? Did you hurt yourself?” question because I often walk as if I’m limping — again, without realizing it, it’s just the way my foot operates.

I trip and fall a lot less, but still have my fair share of spills. And while I hear ya, Cupcake, the wedding-day self-inflicted disasters, I find myself ruminating more often on thoughts like “Gee, I hope our guests don’t wonder if I’m limping down the aisle!”

I plan on keeping my FI/DH close, as he’s Mr. Chivalrous, and so good at offering a solid arm/elbow/shoulder to keep me upright and on two (non-wobbly) legs. You should do the same!

Oh you poor things, sorry about you toe :(
I feel your pain though, I am a Kluzty Cherri! I have a scare on my right foot from wear I fell on my first date w/ FH…My mom is always telling me not to wear tall shoes b/c I’m going to fall, but I proved her wrong b/c the one time I fell and fractured my foot I was barefoot… and FH says I cannot have a Vespa b/c I will fall and crash, HMPT!

Ran into a door that I overestimated the time it would take to close. Broke a toe, FH took me to the ER. The doctor pulled me aside to “make sure everything was ok in our relationship”..yeah, it was pretty embarrasing when I had to explain that nope, I wasn’t beaten, I do all those things to myself…good grief…

Oh goodness. I am so with you… which is part of the reason I don’t have an all white dress and will conveniently have multicolored embroidery right in the spill-zone! (Those of us who are blessed/cursed with major boobage especially know this zone all too well.) Two years ago I fell off a ten-foot stage in the dark (OK, it was pitch-black, but still… *I* was the one who fell) and ended up having to have major reconstructive surgery on my ankle. I still have a whole bunch of metal in my leg, walk with a limp sometimes and am now even klutzier because I still haven’t figured out my new center of gravity!

So, like MagPie, I’m worried about guests thinking I’m limping… I’ve been searching since the day after our engagement for the perfect wedding shoes! Maybe Nikes are underrated as bridal fare.

Cupcake, your burn story reminded me that when Mr.GV proposed, I had a huge scar on my ring finger from some burn I’d suffered the previous week (I can’t even remember all of them!), so every time I showed someone my ring, they said, “Oh NO! What happened to your FINGER?!?”

I am always misjudging and running into door frames. I hadn’t considered until just know that if I have the short dress that I want, I may have to cover up some bruises.
I can spill food on myself without even eating. That think about your FI pushing back the glass, that is us. I may wear a full length rain slicker from when I leave the hotel to when I get to aisle.

I ripped my dress at the first fitting. If I have on a new shirt, I will spill on it. Fi says I need to mark my territory. We had our carpets cleaned, the NEXT day, I spilled a full glass of red wine. I just ran my first half marathon and tripped across the finish line. I feel you.

Um that sounds very familiar to me too! Sounds like we are all klutz’ on here!

Within a week of each other I broke my big toe by dropping a can on it at the grocery store! We had to do a full accident report and all! So embarrasing! Then a week later I was at a friends wedding and they called me to the dance floor by microphone! I got so excited I ran down the stair (just 2 stairs), fell and sprained my ankle! Again, management came up and wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to sue! LOL! Can you sue for being a klutz? HA!
I’m constantly walking into walls that have been there for years and stumbing toes on things! It makes life more interesting I guess! ;-)
The only thing I”m doing is putting on comfy flip flops after the ceremony! But who knows, I am know to trip on flat ground, barefoot! So well see!

GorgesViola, the burn thing happened to me too! Chemical burn. Go figure rubbing alcohol, Mr. Clean, hydrogen peroxide, hand sanitizer don’t mix well. (I was trying to remove a bar stamp from my hand before my graduation)

Same here! I’m buying shoes with ankle straps, because otherwise, I can just picture myself losing a shoe while walking down the aisle!! =P

When I was a senior in high school I was hopping a 4 foot chain link fence in an attempt to avoid walking around the track. Everyone else did it fine but my foot got caught in the top of the fence. I pretty much fell face first, then elbow, and finally knee, into the concrete sidewalk on the other side of the fence. No broken bones, but I looked like I was storing food for winter for about a week because the left side of my face was so swollen and I couldnt straighten my left arm all the way for months. I have cut myself numerous times, and everytime I want to help FI with something that involves tools or sharp objects he just tells me to hold something because he doesn’t want to take me to the hospital. So i feel for all of you…

By the way, Miss Cupcake, I love how sweet and pretty you look in the pic with the giant KLUTZ stamped on it. Too funny.

Ha, I feel your pain, sister! I seem to have trouble knowing where my body is in relation to space, so am always running into things. The head bumps are the worst.

But in terms of avoiding issues on the wedding day, the best advice I can offer is to WEAR FLATS! So much less chance for a Big Trip. (And comfy, too.)

I’m also knocking over wine and water glasses when eating, because apparently I use my hands to talk and don’t even realize it until I’ve knocked it over and liquid has spilled everywhere.

In first grade I was at a father-daughter dance and some girl came up and spilt red punch all over a white dress I had previously worn as a flower girl….ever since then I’ve feared someone is going to spill red wine down the front of my wedding dress!

I feel your pain. I’m a complete klutz too and I don’t even think I can attribute mine to fatigue or stress. It’s just plain poor balance. In fact, during one of the first few times I met Mr. J, I tripped over a girl’s rolling backpack and fell flat on my face. I ended up skinning my knee like a six year old. Months later, after we’d starting dating, I was making him dinner and badly burned my arm on a hot pan (the scar is still faintly visible today). Thankfully, Mr. J lovingly puts up with all my goofs and takes good care of me.

i’m totally with you! during my fittings i kept stepping on the dress with my heels and i was so scared of walking down a long flight of stairs for our ceremony. i told my dad to slow down so that i wouldn’t trip and roll down the stairs! to make the situation easier, i wore low 1 1/2 inch heels and no slingbacks!

WOW, I am glad to hear that I’m not the only klutz in the group! Sometimes I feel like I’m in a movie…. like just the trailers for “Good Luck Chuck” with Jessica Alba falling and running into things was like watching my own life (with the part of me played by a taller, thinner, prettier Jessica Alba :-) )

You guys have some stories that really had me laughing out loud….

@AOEBuckeye: I am always afraid that people are going to think my scrapes and bruises are a result of Mr. Cupcake…. nope, all me!!!!

@Jen: I am constantly walking into things, and it’s usually things in my apartment that have been in the same place for the four years I have lived here!

@GorgesViola: aww, hehe thanks :-)

@Mrs. Bell Pepper: I definitely try not to move much when I try on my dress, because I always want to back away from the mirror and someone always yells “you can’t walk backwards in your dress!” I’m probably going to be a disaster until that thing is bustled :-)

FI and I are always joking about what huge klutzes we are - on the dance floor, a pair or twinkletoes, but a complete menace off the floor. My greatest foe is the dreaded glass door. See-through doors + being in a hurry = embarrassment for me, a good laugh for others

I have replaced all of my stemmed wineglasses with stemless because my fiance without fail breaks stemmed ones. He always breaks them into the sink, though, which I guess has the benefit of being easier to clean up : )

On wedding day:
Wait until the last minute to put your dress on, and touch absolutely no makeup after you do.

Drink only clear beverages - white wine, etc. : )

And bring white chalk to cover up any stains, just in case.

Major klutz. The amazing number of dishes that I’ve broken is a big joke in our house. I tell myself that if I do something stupid, it will just be “endearing.” …but thanks for the chalk tip, Caroline!
