About Mrs. Gingerbread

Tales of a Two Tie Bride

June 2nd, 2008 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Gingerbread

Miss GB 2.0 and I just returned from the airport after spending the whole day traveling home. We were in California for our wedding shower! More on that later. We also did a lot of shopping (2 outlet malls and 2 regular malls in less than 24 hours!) and now Miss GB 2.0 has her wedding outfit…and then some. She’s a two tie and a two shirt bride. She also finally found those elusive cream coloured heeled loafers.

I strong armed poor, tired Miss GB 2.0 to get into her suit and shirts and ties to model her different looks. I even convinced her to let me take photos of her, which she agreed to on the condition that I not photograph the annoyed expression on her face. She also wanted me to add the disclaimer that her tie was sloppily tied and her pants need to be hemmed and the rolled cuffs make the whole outfit look weird. I convinced her that you’d be able to use your imagination.

Let’s do a poll, but before we begin, just a couple of notes.

1) In case you are curious, after scouring the internet and every store we could think of, we finally found some heeled loafers at the Nine West outlet store. It exists!

2) It seems like most women’s shirts do this thing where it doesn’t button all the way up (see photos), but Brooks Brothers, where Miss GB 2.0 found not one, but two shirts, is a great place for women’s dress shirts that actually have a top button.

Now onto the poll. Which shirt/tie combo should Miss GB 2.0 wear?

Outfit #1: This one is a green and brown checkered shirt from Brooks Brothers with a cream Calvin Klein silk tie.

Outfit #2: Same shirt with an Alfani silk tie.

Outfit #3: Cream Brooks Brothers shirt with the cream Calvin Klein silk tie.

Outfit #4: Cream Brooks Brothers shirt and the Alfani silk tie.

Which outfit should Miss GB 2.0 choose?

Number 3 is gorgeous! I love the monochromatic look - that shiny tie really pops. Will she be wearing a flower of some sort on the lapel? I think it would look fabulous!!

2.
Michelle says:

Woot woot! (thats for finally finding the shoes!)

I LOVE the cream tie!!! I think it will look amazing in your photographs! I voted for outfit #3, but really - im just going for the amazing CREAM tie! Though, I can’t really say I’m a big fan of shirt #1. Its not bad - its just a little lackluster.

Make sure to consider what the outfit will look like sans-jacket too. (i’m guessing a chunk of the reception will be spent that way.)

ditto on what melanie said. love the monochromatic look with the shiny tie! looks awesome!

I voted for #4, but #3 is a really close second!

guinness257 says:

I love the all cream also! It looks the most wedding-y to me.

6.
Michelle says:

ooh - your dress has a colored sash right? Either the shirt should be the same color - or go monochromatic (with the AMAZING cream tie) and have a lapel decoration (boutinier or whatever) that matches your sash!!

7.
Melissa at MasterPiece Weddings says:

I agree #3!!! and maybe the ribbon on the flower could match the sash, maybe??? Something to tie you both together… So pretty!!!

8.
Nstar says:

I voted for #1, but I think #3 is great also! I think the darker tie might be just a little too distracting.

danielle says:

Loving #3. And also feeling like a bout. would really set this look off. I think that of the 4 looks, #3 will make Mrs. GB2.0 feel the most like a bride and - well- special in her own right, rather than just another gussied-up guest at the wedding.

Loaf says:

I vote(d) for number 1. I love how the green shirt would be a subtle coordination with your sash and the cream tie is just stunning.

11.
lulubelle says:

I think #3 with a snappy boutonnière would be the best bet.

The weddingbee polls never seem to work on my computer, but I’m casting my vote for option 3 — LOVE IT! (Option 1 is my runner up)

mhb says:

I voted for three, with the idea that she’d carry or wear some colorful flowers with it.

I loooove that cream tie. Good work.

I really like #3 the best.
I have a naive (perhaps ignorant) question that came to mind when I saw GB 2.0 in her lovely white tux. In most lesbian weddings that I’ve seen, instead of having two brides in two beautiful gowns (which sounds fabulous to me, and imagine if they were both two dress brides, it would be like a fashion show wedding!!… I digress)… In most lesbian weddings I’ve seen one partner “is the bride” and the other partner “is the groom” and they dress according to society’s heterosexual wedding standards (one in a gown, the other in a tux/suit). Why? I’m sure in your situation the answer is that GB 2.0 doesn’t wear gowns, and that would answer it if you were the only same-sex wedding in which your partner “chose” not to wear a gown - but that doesn’t answer the question as to why the majority (or ALL?) lesbian weddings (appear to) try to fit into the heterosexual mold of 1 bride and 1 groom - instead of 2 brides.

GorgesViola says:

Hey Miss GB! Tell Miss GB 2.0 that her suit is super hot, even with the pants needing to be hemmed and no head. :-)

I’m with the green-shirt lovers… that little bit of summery color is so sweet and coordinates great with your dress! I think that shirt sets off the tie better, too, and since she’s wearing the jacket buttoned, it’s not so much color that she’ll feel like she’s wearing a guest-type outfit. (And hopefully they won’t be wearing white, anyway!)

It would be great if you guys coordinated your flowers to be similar but not matchy-matchy. Is she wearing a boutonniere or carrying a bouquet, or nothing?

Miss Gingerbread says:

@enmoore66: That’s a good question. I can’t speak for all same-sex couples, but I can say that Miss GB 2.0 never wears dresses. She loves wearing suits and to her, adding a tie is a way to dress it up and make it feel more formal than like she’s going to a job interview. I’d say that a lot of it has to do with gender expression. In general, women have a lot of leeway in what they wear, especially compared to men. A woman can wear a suit, even with a tie, and still be viewed as a woman, where as a man couldn’t wear a dress with the same ease. Society is much more strict on gendered clothing for men.

There are plenty of lesbian weddings where there are two women in dresses. I’ve also seen two women in suits. Or like you pointed out, one in a dress and one in a suit. I think it’s all about what makes you feel most comfortable and authentically you on your big day. Any other same-sex wedding couples want to chime in?

Miss Gingerbread says:

@GorgesViola: My mom is going to do our bouquets. We will both be carrying one. I think a boutonnière would add some colour to the suit, but maybe that’s too many flowers?

@Michelle: We were originally looking for a shirt that would match the sash, but that sash colour really isn’t so hot next to either one of our faces. A matching green tie might work though. We are still on the look out. Miss GB 2.0 might just end up being a three tie bride before all of this is over :)

YAY so happy you found the perfect shoes!
#3 is my favorite :)

GetMarried4Less says:

i love the monochromatic look…thats my fave….but if she wanted a hint of color, then wearing the ivory tie with the green checked shirt would be a lovely option.

although the darker ties are lovey….i’m not a fan of them with this ensemble….

luv the suit! she’s gonna be hot after alterations!

V says:

I like #1…from the pics it looks like it would match your sash better…and a little splash of color doesn’t hurt.

kelly says:

For about 80% of the lesbian weddings I have seen it’s one in a suit and one in a dress. I think it has a lot to do with having an ‘untraditional’ wedding frees you from any standard and girls feel more empowered to wear something more in line with their gender expression/comfort level/whatever. I think a lot more straight brides would go the suit route if there was not so much pressure on them for the ‘perfect gown’.
That said, both me and my partner will be wearing dresses. We both wear dresses regularly and are picking dresses that fit our style. It actually feels ‘odd’ for both of us going the dress route because I don’t see too many lesbian brides going that route. Ha! Traditionally untraditional.

Alana says:

I love look #3 in all white — stunning!

23.
My says:

I think that the all white is super HOTT!!! As for me and my chick I am definitely the dress wearer of the two of us. However she does wear dresses occasionally. I just asked her and surprisingly she just said she was wearing a dress. I have a feeling that will probably change. Don’t get me wrong she looks fabulous in a dress, I just assumed that she wasn’t wearing a dress… But you know what they say when you assume.

Also to chime in with what Kelly said most lesbian weddings that I have seen one wears a dress and the other wears a suit. And I totally agree with what Kelly said about women feeling the pressure of society in choosing to wear a dress.

Tara says:

#3 all the way. The look is gorgeous!

25.
Cara says:

I like number 1 or all white or #3

26.
bearbride says:

I think number 3 looks awesome and a something like a bouttoniere would be a good thing! the suit is seriously great..

27.
Miss Popcorn says:

I voted for 1: uniformity of soft colours, but still contrast.

I see 3 is in the lead, but one of the things I’ve noted in many people’s wedding photos is that if the tie and shirt are too close in colour, some of your photos will look like the person is wearing a white t-shirt under a jacket.

28.
Thea T says:

I guess I’m bucking the trend, but I really favor look #1 over the monochromatic look. I wonder if with GB 2.0’s coloring if all-white will wash her out a bit. Plus I love the subtle pop of color the checked shirt gives. I’m sure either option will look fabulous, though, so whatever ya’ll like best!

29.
Laine says:

Uh-oh, can I vote none of the above? I don’t love the all white look, I think its the shiny tie that isn’t doing it for me, but I think the dark tie is too much contrast. Can you try a lighter colored tie?

And I think I like the colored shirt, but I’d like to see both shirts with a lighter tie.

And actually, are you set on a tie? I kinda like the idea of just a shirt, open at the top button (though ‘d have to see it to be sure).

30.
beanchar says:

I love #3 too b/c it’s elongating and as a fellow shortie, I will always pick the choice that gives the illusion of an extra inch or two. ;)

If you think a bout would be too many flowers with her also carry a bouquet, how about a silk pocket square in a pretty green & white pattern? Something you could probably use Etsy’s “Alchemy” function to get custom made or have a freind with a sewing machine whip up!

Erin says:

I voted for #4 and was clearly in the minority! But I had a hard time choosing between it and #3. I see that the possibility of a green tie to match your sash has already been brought up - But that’s what I was thinking while reading your post! If you can’t find a tie to match, you may be able to order a second sash or extra fabric from Watters and have one made. If not, I like the idea of pulling in the green with a pocket square or boutonniere.

Love that suit!

32.
KatyStardust says:

I love #1 and I think more people would choose it if the photo was from further away…

33.
appleb says:

I vote for 1 and 3 as well. That is one hot suit! It’s going to look even better once the pants are tailored. Stunning.

I can’t WAIT to see this wedding. This is going to be SO COOL.

35.
missm says:

i love the striped tie, but think #3 is a great look. if you want to add a splash of color (above any color in the bouquets), how about a pocket square? somehow, a bout + a bouquet seems a bit much, at least while they were together. you could always opt for a bouquet for the ceremony with a bout after. :)

36.
MagPie518 says:

Why not the two faves? One for the ceremony, one for the afterparty? My sister did this with a sash on her gown — ivory for the church, red satin (yowza!) for the reception.

37.
lauradee says:

I love the monochomatic look, but I too would like to see a light colored tie. I don’t hav eany great suggestiosn beyond what’s already been mentioned, but in a separate vein, I think the idea for Ms. GB 2.0 to carry a bouquet during the ceremony and trade out for a bout afterwards could work out really well.

38.
Desaray says:

Might I suggest a darker shirt to accentuate the creamy, dreamy tie?

39.
chibride says:

I can’t wear those button up shirts with the built in v neck. I think they’re so odd.

Your FW looks awesome in her suit. I think the dark tie is too much of a contrast…I think we’ll be seeing a 3rd tie before too long. I voted for #1 & #3 was my runner up.
