The Bloom is Off the Rose

June 2nd, 2008 @ 11:04 am by Mrs. Hummingbird

And the flower is off my head.

Not too long after I wrote my post about hair accessories, I knew I needed to buy mine, so I rushed out to order myself some. I was looking for something purple in the hopes that I could find something to compliment my bouquet, which was especially tricky, but I managed to find a shop on etsy that seemed to have something that would work. So, I ordered two different ones for fun - one for the rehearsal dinner and one for the wedding itself.

The shop was relatively new and hadn’t sold too much stock, but as I know several people who sell on etsy (including Mr. Hum!), I didn’t think much of it, because I know it can take a while to get a fanbase.

Anyway, I was really excited to get my purchases and every day when I got home I asked Mr. Hum if they’d arrived because I was anxious to try them on. But somehow, they never seemed to come while other things I had ordered after seemed to be arriving no problem.

Three weeks after my initial order, I received a convo from the seller. She said that, despite the fact she had e-mailed me after my purchase saying she would ship the next day, she had forgotten about me, so to make up for it, she was shipping my order to me via express post and would refund my shipping fees.

Okay, I thought, no big deal. The wedding is still a ways away.

Over a week passed and still no express post package. So I e-mailed again, asking if she might be able to track the package for me via tracking number. For whatever reason, she couldn’t, although she could tell me about how much having to express post something was costing her.

Finally, a few days later, the very beaten up package arrived (thanks for that, Canada Post!) and I opened it to find that not only were the things I ordered not of the greatest quality, but that the order itself was wrong and that the specific request I had made in my conversations with her and on my order form had been ignored and that I had just been sent whatever.

I’m not writing this to slam etsy, because I’ve bought and received a number of really awesome gifts from there (my friend Kim bought us awesome Super Mario Coasters and I can’t say enough how much I love my necklace from Meg Leigh) or to even slam the seller in question (I think she was just an inexperienced seller and the later shipping delays were a post office issue and not her fault), but to say sometimes it pays to not leave things until the last minute and rush into a decision you’re not 100 percent sure about.

I’m scouring Toronto for a new hair accessory this week. Wish me luck!

When it comes to your wedding, have you ever rushed into a decision you later found yourself regretting? Tell me about it.

i am so sorry that you ran into this problem! i have a love/hate relationship with selling/buying on etsy– i have had really great experiences in general. but it’s those times when you accidentally run into inexperienced people that sort of ruin a good shopping experience and it does hurt the rest of us that try to maintain a great relationship with our customers. you are awesome to have an open mind and remember that not everyone is the same on etsy; i hope everyone can think that way when this happens!

best of luck finding a new hair accessory; i hope you find the perfect one. :D

I am so sorry this happened to you, Miss H! I don’t know if we are allowed to recommend a seller, but I got my hair piece from Myrakim on Etsy– I think she has been mentioned here before– and it was the BEST experience! She is SOOOO talented ans SOOOOO sweet! She makes sure you are 100% happy with your piece before you pay for it. I recommend her to anyone and everyone looking for something beautiful and unique. On my wedding day (two weeks ago- yay!) , almost every female guest asked me where I got the beautiful flower in my hair!
Good luck!

Ack. That’s totally unprofessional of the seller, and you should absolutely give negative feedback and detail why. It’s always hard to have to do this to a person especially when you’re understanding the way you are, but if people don’t distinguish between sellers who behave professionally and those who don’t, then the whole handmade movement is hurt if other people continue being subjected to the same poor professionalism without warning.

Awww, sorry to hear about it, Hum. If it makes you feel any better, we had shipping/expediting issues with the tie I had my heart set on for Mr. Lovebug. It didn’t come on time, and we had to rush order another…which I really didn’t love.

I’m sure you’ll find something fabulous.

I had almost exactly the same issue with purses I custom ordered from a seller on etsy. It was really sad because she seemed so nice at first, but then when I started asking where it was and when she shipped she backed off and hardly communicated with me at all. To add to all this, she got my order slightly wrong (one of the bows was the wrong color). I was pleased with them, overall, but po’d at the seller.

It won’t stop me from using etsy, though maybe not from Canada, since I’ve had issues with things getting lost in the mail before.

I think Ms Popcorn has the right idea, because her feedback was 100%, but other people had had the same issues I did and didn’t leave appropriate feedback! Very frustrating.
