About Mrs. Cookie

The Short and the Long

June 2nd, 2008 @ 12:58 pm by Mrs. Cookie

I have always had straight, short hair. When I was five, my mother cut my hair into the infamous Dorothy Hamill haircut. Although I had several different hair-dos –including really bad perms in the early 90s –the next fourteen years of my life I had nothing but straight, short hair.

In college, my short hair was fantastic. I would roll out of bed, grab a quick shower, blow dry my hair, toss a little product, and run out the door. No fuss, no mess. I loved it! To illustrate how short my hair was, below is a photo of me, circa 2005. Please note the differences and similarities to the Dorothy Hamill do.

After college and right before I met Mr. Cookie, I decided out-of-the-blue that I was done with the straight, short hair and decided to grow it out. So long Dorothy Hamill! Now, this was a major, hair altering decision considering I had spent almost 24 years with short hair. As my hair grew longer, I started to play around with all the different styles: flat, curly, and up-dos to see what I liked best. For my friend’s wedding–where Mr. Cookie and I would meet — I decided to go curly. Below is my friend (and future bridesmaid) on her wedding day and myself.

Remember, Mr. Cookie and I were in a long distance relationship. In between the day we met and the next time Mr. Cookie saw me again was six gruelling weeks. Literally, the second phrase out of his mouth the moment we saw one another again was, “I thought you had curly hair? You had curly hair at the wedding.” Subsequent photos and baby pictures would convince him otherwise.

When thinking about my hairstyle for the wedding, I thought back to the day we met and my curly hair. Now, my hair is longer than I have ever had it, and would be perfect for some long loose curls. So, I took the below image of Katherine McPhee’s hair at her wedding this weekend to my hairstylist for a pseudo hair trial.

Here is how it turned out, and me trying to get a good hair shot in our bathroom mirror. I love it! My veil won’t be done until the middle of July, but when I go for my cut and color in August I’ll be able to take it to do the real hair trial. Below is my hair, eight hours later. The curls fell out a little more than I would have liked, but I think it still looks good.

Although my long hair is definitly growing on me, I am half tempted just to chop off my hair after the wedding and go back to my short hair days.

Are you growing your hair out for the wedding or doing something completely different than you normally do with your hair just for the big day?

I have not cut my hair since march of 2007. It is driving me crazy and really needs to be trimmed, but I keep having nightmares that I cut all of my hair off so I can’t bring myself to even trim it!

I love the style you have chosen by the way. I am hoping for something similar for our big day.

LOVE the hair trial run!

While not as extreme as yours - I’m in a similar set up. I normally keep my hair short-er (longer than chin, shorter than shoulder area), but when I was proposed to, I was already past my shoulders for being too busy for a hair cut - so since i want my hair to be mostly down with a little curl to it, I am growing it out. It will have been growining for a year and a half come wedding ! And then after - I am heading to the nearest salon to donate it to locks of love. Cause while I think its very pretty, and my fiance loves it - its takes a lot more effort!!!

All of those hairstyles look great on you!

@jenniferb: I’m having the same experience. People kept saying, “Oh, your hair is longer! Are you growing it out for the wedding?!” But no, I just needed a haircut :)

You look beautiful in the last picture. Those soft waves are very flattering. Keep the hair long-ish (as in the picture).

I’m growing mine out so it’s long for the wedding. I might even get a hair cut the day after the wedding, the day before the honeymoon so I won’t have to worry about it for any longer!

@AliCherri1: I’ve had the cutting-off of hair post wedding discussion with Mr. Cookie, and although he won’t freak, he would like it longer than my college days. FYI: My hair was a lot shorter, but that was the best pict I could find.
@Michelle: I think that is fabulous that you are giving your hair to lock of love!

When my FI and I met, I had short hair. In fact, I had just recently had a haircut, and my hair was almost as short as his (he is in the Army, so there you see how short my hair was). He loved it short and so did I, but then when we got engaged I started thinking “Do I want this short hair in all my wedding pictures? Wouldn’t it be fun to have some hair to do something with…?” so I grew it out. Now we are a few months out, and I am so tempted to chop it all off - a little shorter than yours in your college picture. I sooo want to, and I know he would love it, but then I get the same fear “wouldn’t it be fun to have long hair to do something with……”

I know shorter hair is easier, but the longer look is so flattering on you. It gives you a much softer look. I think your face is framed so nicely in the last picture.

I love it! I think hair down is more flattering and I know my guy prefers it so that’s how it’ll be!

Like GB, I was not intentionally growing my hair out for the wedding, but I simply stalled. Then when I finally got to the stylist for a trim, I regretted it! I have two months before the wedding, and NOW I’m growing it out! ;)

Your hair looks so soft and pretty, ohmigosh. I’d grow mine forever if it weren’t a curly nightmare.

I love you with the longer hair, so I think you should keep it after the wedding. Mine is on the longer side and usually is, I figured I would have more options come wedding time because I’d have more hair to play with.

I like both styles on you, but I think the longer is my fave. I have been going NUTS wanting to cut my hair! Mine is usually about chin length but I have grown it to my shoulders and my FI likes it longer. Shoulder length is about as long as I’ll go b/c it’s so thin anything longer is terrible, IMHO anyway. So I recently got layers. And burgundy highlights. (Subtle, yet fun!) Hopefully this will help me hold off until the big day (11/1/08). I warned my FI after that it’s fair game!

the soft waves are soooo pretty! when my FI and I met, i had short hair, which proceeded to get shorter and shorter. after a brief stay in pixie-ville, i’ve been growing it out. my hair is super fine and impossibly straight - i finally found someone that cuts it perfectly so all i do is wash and go and it has *gasp* body! thank you, clever layered haircut.

of course, it doesn’t really curl well, so i wanted some sort of updo for the wedding. hair trial was last month and the layering was a bit problematic, but the stylist said it would be plenty long for my September wedding. so now my hair is much longer than usual and really starting to bother me. i may try for a trim (just a little one) between now and then or at least contacting my regular hair stylist (over an hour from the wedding site) and seeing if she’ll squeeze in an appointment for me to get a haircut in the two days between our wedding and honeymoon departure. oh the temptation!

I’ve had my hair short since sophomore year of college, and while I considered growing it out for the wedding (I always loved updos!), I want to be able to actually recognize myself in the photos. :)

I grew my hair all through college (like, the complete opposite of you, Cookie!) to donate to Locks of Love. Such a great cause, but the length — almost totally down my back, save an inch or two — drove me crazy! I usually just ended up with a knot or bun. So, I was happy to go to shoulder-length after the 10-inch hair donation for senior year.

Then, I tried shorter — jawbone length — and LOVED it until I got engaged and started trying on dresses. Too short for my fit-and-flare dress styles! :-(

So, now I’m growing again, aiming for slightly longer than shoulder-length (arm-pit length, maybe, if that didn’t sound so gross?). I know I’ll get there in time for the nuptuals ;-) but I’m way impatient for the e-pics THIS September. I feel like I check my hair length every day!

Aw… I love your hair trial, it looks gorgeous!

I can’t wait to cut my hair after the wedding. I have had it long for about 5 years now so it’s time for the chop, but I want an up-do for the wedding so can’t cut it just yet…

Your hair trial turned out beautifully. I like your short hair do too.

I’ve been growing my hair out for a century now. I can’t wait to chop it all off, but I’m waiting for it to be long enough for locks of love. I have been getting a lot of questions about keeping my hair long for the wedding, but I’m actually really excited to go back to short.

Aww, what a cute picture of us! I like the loose curls on you. =)

So obviously, my hair was long for my wedding, and I grew it out because I wanted it to look fancy, but my hair is so darn straight that putting it up was the only way to make it do the same thing all day. My grandma was concerned that I wouldn’t “look like me” with long hair, but she liked it in the end.

I left it long for about a year after the wedding since it took so long to grow out until I got tired of looking 17. The hubby was nervous until he saw my hair was adorable short (and it took 1/4 the time to dry, dramatically reducing prep time).

Now I just have to figure out what to do with it for your wedding!
