Boxes… and More Boxes

June 3rd, 2008 @ 1:34 pm by Mrs. Hydrangea

A little over a year ago, Mr. H and I were fortunate enough to be able to build our first home. We had been apartment dwellers for quite a while and, once we knew that we were going to get engaged and our leases were up, we decided to take the next step towards getting our own home.

Fast forward to a year after we move in. We have a home, a pup and a wedding to plan. All of our ideas for decorating the house, aside from a few essential purchases, flew out the window. The wedding is even starting to take over our house. Case in point: our dining room. No longer a dining room, it is now a workroom and a storage room. Boxes upon boxes of wedding items, table numbers strewn about, our work table filled with projects that are yet to be completed. Instead of a nice room to eat in, this is what people see when walking into our humble abode:

I can only imagine what it will be like once all of our wedding purchases are delivered and we start to receive gifts. I will admit that the one thing I’m looking forward to after the wedding is being able to finally “settle” into our house and make it more of a home, and not just a place to store our stuff.

My final items to share with you all from my Memorial Day wedding planning extravaganza are all of the wedding boxes. Boxes, you might ask?In order, from top to bottom, are two bathroom boxes (or baskets), a box for programs and, finally, the box for our guests to put cards into. All of which were purchased at my favorite Hobby Lobby for, you guessed it, 50% off!

I chose these boxes because they are simple, modern and, most importantly, look just like the chairs that we will have at the reception. Now, I just need to figure out a cute way to attach signs to them so that our guests will know what they are for.

How did you all label your wedding boxes (baskets), or plan to do so for your wedding? Do you have any inspiration links, because I’d love to see some examples!

You could probably make some pretty cute tags to loop through those handles, with card stock and ribbon or maybe even from leather luggage tags. Or make a little easel or picture frame sign to go in front of the boxes.

Adorable! I love how simple and elegant your boxes are. Plus after the wedding you can ACTUALLY USE them for something! What a novel idea!

Here’s how I labeled some baskets and jars at my wedding:

It’s a bit off subject, but can I just say that I’m so disappointed that neither The Container Store nor Storables has a gift registry??? We’re condensing two households with our marriage, so we don’t really need kitchen goods, etc. But with our new house what we really need is organization! I would love to get closet organizers, filing supplies, china storage, etc for our wedding. But without a registry, I don’t know how to tactfully request gift cards. I’m having my mom spread it through word of mouth, and I’m hoping to hint during my shower… we’ll see if it works…

I think the bathroom boxes will be pretty obvious because they will be in the bathrooms and full of supplies your guests can use. However, if you fear confusion, you could add a small sign through the handle loops. There are lots of pretty bad poems out there (I’m not really into poems on everything as some brides are) but I think a little “help yourself” “courtesy of the bride and groom” could work nicely. Will you have a gift table? the presence alone could get guests to put card there without having to make a sign, which could be awkward - kind of like”put your cash in here!” Or, you could do like bartenders do when they start off their tip jar by adding a few empty card envelopes so people get the jist.

I hope this is semi-related to your topic, but one thing to keep in mind is that when your gifts start rolling-in, you’ll be FLOODED by those crazy packing peanuts! It’s really ridiculous. Anyone who’s ever registered at Macy’s knows exactly what I’m talking about. Those little peanuts do a great job of protecting the things you buy (not one item scratched!), but they’re really a pain.

My advice: keep a little pocket knife by the front door, along with outdoor size garbage bags. This will make the breakdown and disposal of all that packing material a lot more efficient for you. It sounds silly (I know), but every little second helps when you’re in wedding planning!
