Keeping It Cool

June 4th, 2008 @ 6:07 pm by Mrs. Canary

Well, the actual title of this post should be “How Not to be a Sweaty Beast on Your Wedding Day.” But that might have been too frightening! Here is where I divulge my big embarrassing confession: My name is Miss Canary and I am a sweat-er.

I think it runs in the family. Papa Canary starts eating a bowl of noodles… and pow… he starts to drip like he’s been hanging out in the Amazon! Come summer and NYC humidity, I start sweating big time. And of course, smarty Miss Canary decides to get married in sweltering July… one of the hottest and most humid months in the city.

One of the products that I’ve been using for years is Origins’ No Offense deodorant. It is pricey for deodorant, but the stuff works wonders and is alcohol free so you don’t get crazy broken skin. Also, I heard a lot of breast cancer survivors use this deodorant because it’s all natural without any harmful chemicals. I used to hoard it because Origins discontinued it for a while, but now I am happy to report that is always available online.

Now for the rest of the bod… donning a huge A-line dress with lining isn’t going to help my sweat-free bridal look, so I am taking precautions and like the big baby I am, getting some body powder!

I tried the Shower-to-Shower one, but kept making a mess everywhere, so I think I’m going to need some kind of puff or brush. The Kabuki brush from Elf seems like a good bet. At $8 it’s a bargain to all the other body brushes I’ve seen (which range from $15-55!!!). The brush would also be great for applying bronzer or shimmer powder.

The classic Jean Nate one includes a puff so that may be another great portable option for all those lovely outdoor shots we plan on taking.

Anyone else wants have any additional tips on how to stay “fresh”?

I know that many people dislike it, but I love and have relied on Certain-Dri since puberty hit in junior high, when it became painfully clear that I, too, am a sweater. I apply it after I shower, go to sleep, and wake up dry. That dryness lasts at least 24 hours, then I maybe have to put on a tab bit of deodorant. And I mean a tad!

It can be a bit irritating at times, but it’s worth it. My suggestions to reduce any stinging are to make sure that you are shaving your underarms with a very sharp razor, and to avoid razor burn at all costs, whatever that means for you. For me, that means shaving only every other day.

Love the body powder. I need to get some!

If you haven’t already purchased the brush, you can put CAROLINA in as a coupon code and get 50% off… this code was part of a mass forward I received that actually turned out to be a scam but the coupon code was real :) Also give yourself LOTS of time on the delivery I heard bad things about ELF and their ability to get orders to ppl on time.

I remembered attending a wedding in July, 1999 (NYC); it was the hottest day ever. I hope it will be a cool one for you.

At the advice of other Wedding Bee users I tried the Kiehls Superbly Efficient Antiperspirant and Deoderant Cream for our Memorial Day weekend wedding in Arizona. This stuff is AMAZING. I used it the week before and liked it so much that my fiance started using it too. It keeps you completely dry and odor free. We are now converts for life!

Best of all, it is safe for sensitive skin and organic.

this is one of the primary reasons why i vetoed summer as a possible option for our nuptials. i sweat like an alcoholic….there was no way i wanted to endure that in the hot muggy heat of the South.

even still, having a November wedding i will have to layer on all types of concoctions…i also sweat when nervous or rushed so i want to be prepared. i will definitely be going with the powder…something heavy duty so i dont smell like a construction worker by the end of the day. ;)

I agree with Kelly; I just tried Certain-Dri just this week (I bought it on Sunday) and it really works! (I found out about it from the Boards…thanks Hive! I’m also a sweat-er and it’s ruined quit a number of articles of clothing, if you know what i mean..and the past three days that I’ve been on Certain-Dri, I’ve been sweat-free! (it says it works for 72-hours and I can certainly attest that it certainly does!) If only I found out sooner…;-)

I’ve heard that there are “cleavage coolers” — basically tiny ice packs you take out of the freezer, pop into a little case, and then nestle between the girls. Supposedly they’re amazing and do wonders to keep your body temperature down. I don’t know where to get them, but I’m sure Google does (if you’re interested)!

thanks for bringing this up because i too am a sweat-er. so i’ll definitely be keeping my hair up. i’m getting married in march and being in California, the weather is so unpredictable so I’m hoping its a nice cool not so hot day.

I don’t have anything to add but solidarity - our wedding was in July in Chicago… it was in the upper 90s. My husband and I both hate hot weather and we sweat terribly, and the church had no AC. Who picked that date? Us. Because we’re crazy, I guess. But we still had a lot of fun… so don’t sweat it too much! Hehe.

I can totally relate…used Drysol for awhile but it makes my skin ITCH like crazy so I had to switch to something called Odaban (but it’s gotta be shipped from the UK which sucks). I’m gonna try the Kiehls for sure! I’m unfortunately a sweater not just on my body but my face (I’m already imagining all that professionaly applied makeup running down my face)! AND I am getting married in Hawaii in one of the hottest months…wish me luck that I don’t end up looking like Whitney Houston when she sings those high notes. I am crossing my toes and fingers.

I used Drysol for a while after becoming a sweaty, anxiety-riddled mess when living in Tokyo, but it made me really really itchy too.

Now I use Certain Dri from the drugstore, which is a similar medication with a slightly lower dose of aluminum chloride. The best way to get results with this stuff is to use it before bed but not directly after a shower, and make sure never to use it right after you shave your armpits (that’s really really stingy/itchy).

I shave mine every other day and I use this stuff on my “off” days when I feel like I might need it. Technically it gives 72-hour protection but I use it every other day if I know I’m going to be in a stressful/exciting situation like travel or speaking, and I make sure to use it for about a week leading up to the event.

You can also try Degree’s new “prescription strength” antiperspirant, which offers similar results but uses a different compound. I’ve heard it works well, but my drugstore didn’t offer it when I went looking for something.

If you’re feeling REALLY adventurous or flush, you could botox your armpits or problem areas– Botox is now used to treat perspiration issues.

The problem with all of these solutions is that none of them are really very good for you. The chemicals in strong antiperspirants are skin irritants at the least and toxic at the worst. Botox is MADE from a paralytic toxin (botulism toxin) and even though it’s clinically safe… it’s still has risks.

Aaaand that’s a wrap.

I suffered through the irritation of Drysol for a while and it was worth it! After just a few months of using it every few nights, my sweating problem was gone! I used to not be able to wear any kind of tight or non-breathable shirt without having issues, but now I can even rock a gray shirt in the summer without worrying (about my pits at least). For my wedding, I’m planning on going with the Keihls since I’ve heard great things about it, and lots of good old fashioned baby powder.

Thank you all! I have nothing to add, but am getting married this Saturday, the day a crazy heat wave is supposed to hit. With an outdoor ceremony and being a fellow sweat-er I freaked out. While I am still worried about the heat, I ran out this morning and bought the Kiehl’s and Certain-Dri so at least now I feel like I won’t sweat down my dress. THANKS!!!!

Certain-Dri! But you have to remember to use a deodorant in the morning, because it just stops you from sweating, not from smelling.

MissyJenn says:

FYI….they have Certain-Dri for feet too, which I have yet to buy/use…. anyone used that yet? Good results?
