About Mrs. Coconut

I know that you are eagerly waiting to hear the story of Miss Coconut’s first bridezilla moment, right?!?! smile emoticon Okay, so picking up from Part 1, I had scored some awesome, affordable bridesmaid dresses from J.Crew, but the color bothered me a little. Fast forward to Memorial Day weekend, when we found those kick-butt sport coats for the groomsmen, NOW the color really bothered me. I felt that our bridal party was too bland, too Mr. and Miss Gap if you know what I mean. I wanted a punch of color, and this time I wasn’t afraid.

I went directly to my laptop, well it was already in front of me, but whatever and went to my beloved J. Crew, and began perusing their sales. It just so happened they were offering an additional 20% off, and you know how Miss Coconut loves a good bargain (by Mr. Coconut association). Now, I didn’t want to shamelessly copy everything that inspired our groomsmen attire, but I did want something bright.

I was also looking for something non-strapless and non-bridesmaidy because one of my bridesmaids is well endowed. Which, I always think that’s a good thing but it means she can’t comfortably wear a strapless dress, so that was my new requirement.

I present to you, our new and bright non-bridesmaidy, non-strapless bridesmaid dress:

And for the ones who prefer strapless:

Looks familiar, right?! Yes, they are the same dresses but in Sour Lemon! They were a tad more expensive ($20), but my wonderful ladies didn’t mind at all! (*Actually, I had chosen a different yellow dress from J.Crew last week, but when I received it today, it was all wrong, so we switched AGAIN back to embossed beach dresses. For those keeping count, this is our 3rd bridesmaid dress. Yes, my girls wanted to kill me, but they still love Miss Coconut!)

What did I do with the old brown ones? Well, it’s been about 8 months since we purchased them and our receipts are long gone, but J.Crew was awesome enough to look up all the order #’s and accept the old brown ones as an exchange for the new one.

Is anyone else opting for J. Crew bridesmaid dresses?

I got my bridesmaids dresses at J. Crew and they are wonderful! I ordered the Sadie and Ella in Wildberry (fall of ‘07) and they were on sale! The best was how great J. Crew was through the entire process with returns and finding correct (and non-ripped) sizes. I totally recommend J. Crew, I can’t say enough about how great they were to my and my girls.
I love your yellow color….I wanted yellow but I have a few girls that would look too washed out in yellow.

My bms are wearing the Lyndsey dress in navy. I’m totally obsessed with them and so are the girls. The look great on and the material is beautiful. I also got them on final sale and they ended up being $120 rather than $275.

My maid of honor has been trying to order the Chiffon Sophia from JCrew in black but apparently they are no where to be found in her size (10 or 12). We’ve been in touch with JCrew but all they say is that they are backordered. It’s not a problem for the other bridesmaid as she’s 2 petite. They advertise they have the dress online and in the catalog but seriously, that dress is no where to be found. I’m glad we have 4 months to find something else if we need to.

Those are the exact same dresses my BMs wore, in bright blue! I also gave them the option of the halter neck in that material (not sure if it’s still on the site) and they all loved theirs and I know at least 2 of the 4 have worn them again already!

Also - LOVE the yellow!!

i LOVE navy and yellow!
i’m confused about the guys though - you thought the lights suits were too informal - so you went with sports coats? aren’t sports coats less formal than suits? maybe i know less about menswear than i thought. ha!

My girls are all wearing the Rebecca short dress in navy. One dress is backordered until two weeks before the wedding, so hopefully it will all go okay, but the other two girls got their dresses on-time and in perfect condition! :D

@Annie:

What?! When??? How???? I have selected the Lyndsey dress in Navy for my girls too, but the dresses are still going for full price on the JCrew website and not to mention they are back ordered in some sizes!!!

But on a side note, I LOVE J.Crew’s bridesmaid dresses!

Glad you were accommodating to your well-endowed friend with a non-strapless dress! It’s nice to have the option for those not comfortable with strapless.

I’m doing JCrew dresses too. I wanted well made, non-shiny, non-polyester, re-wearable dresses. These fit the bill!! I let the girls pick from 3 different styles: 2 are wearing the Juliet, 2 are wearing the Sophia, and 1 is wearing the Abigail. I felt a little bit Bridezilla, as I had originally had them all get a “regal purple” color — then J Crew just came out with a new shade called “wild peony” which PERFECTLY matches our other colors. Luckily, JCrew had no problem doing an exchange, AND I got 20% off all the dresses during the exchange as there was a sale that weekend. Now I have $20 or $30 worth of gift cards for each girl!!

I LOVED the vintage burgundy Sophia from the start, and all three girls purchased them over Memorial Day to get the discount!

My favorite part of the process was that my BMs are all over the northeast, and one of them visited a store near her to get an idea of sizing. Not only were they very helpful by having her try on similar dresses to get an idea of her size, but they gave her info on in-store alterations (which should come to $20 on average).

I’m super excited to see them all when they arrive in July!

Very, very cute choice! I love the J. Crew dresses. . . . hoping to get one on one of the great sales for my rehearsal dinner dress. (My one witness — my best woman — is going to pick out a black dress for herself from wherever — she has way more fashion sense than I do so I know she’ll look fabulous whatever she chooses!)

We did the Lindsay dresses in navy, and they looked AMAZING on everybody and so classy! Plus I know that at least one of my bridesmaids has worn hers two more times! You can’t beat that.

I wore that EXACT same dress (even the same color) as a BM last summer. Very comfy, and they can definitely wear it again.

@jen: Our sport coats are a brown tweed, a little darker than the tan suits I was referring to. In my opinion, I feel like a darker suit looks a tad more formal. I feel the tan suits are perfect for an outdoor reception or beach wedding, and I just wanted a little something extra. ;)

@Rachel: Oooh, that’s so cool! Yeah, it’s on the more casual side, but the girls really love that they could wear the dress A LOT - out to lunch, out to shop, out to the beach!

OMG! i’m so in love with the Rebecca short dresses in black, but not in love with the price tag. Anyone know where I can get a discount code or a better deal?

long time reader! been following you over on your other site! i LOVE jcrew dresses! i was going back and forth so much on those Cotton Cady ones - the Sour Lemon and the Orange Peel, but when my sister (MOH) finally tried them on, she thought they were too poofy. then the Florence dress came out! it has a very nice Sweet Orange color, bright and a little pinky. we got them! and then they went on sale!! so they all got a $250 for $143!!!

however - rumor has it there will be some gorgeous silk chiffon styles coming on in mid-july… and an orange color! i would have done it, but that would be cutting it a little close on time! i hope i don’t change my mind!

I actually used the same dress in green for my wedding in May! 2 of my bridesmaids wore the strapless and one wore the halter.
