Tossing Fortune

June 4th, 2008 @ 1:35 pm by Mrs. Flamingo

Even though the bouquet toss is a big wedding cliché, it’s a must for me and our wedding wouldn’t be the same without it. I’m a fresh flower lover and my toss bouquet will get the same amount of attention as my own bridal bouquet.

(Via: Martha Stewart)

I find it sad that only one lucky lady gets to catch the bouquet. There are so many important ladies (family, siblings and friends) that I want to throw more than one bouquet. Then the wonderful Martha Stewart introduced the fortune bouquet to me - a cute and smart way to shower your single ladies with more love. Mini clusters of flowers in pink and ivory with a special message was the first thing I decided on when it was time to choose my flowers.

But now I need your help. I have no idea what fortunes I should write. Would you mind sharing one of your favorite fortunes?

There’s this website: http://cbio.mskcc.org/~bader/fortunes/fortunes.html

I just like it because it says “you’re surrounded by fortune hunters” — which in this case would be true ;).

Probably not terribly helpful, but there are lots of sites with love quotes.

My friend tossed her bouquet and when it flew into the air it was so pretty when the bouquet opened up into little bundles! It’s a great idea.

What kind of fortunes were you thinking? Inspirational? Thank you? Gratitude? Humourous? Romantic?

I’m putting cake charms in/on my cake. Each charm depicts a ‘fortune’. There’s $ for wealth, a baby carriage for a child, a shamrock for good luck, an airplane for travel, a wedding ring for next to be married, etc.

However, one of my BMs is infertile, so I really don’t want her to pluck out the baby carriage and be reminded of her struggles in the middle of my reception.

Another BM, due to a variety of significant hurdles, may never be married, and I don’t want her to pull out the wedding band and be reminded of her struggles.

So I’m sticking with stuff like wealth, good luck, travels, love (not necessarily romantic), contented life, etc.

I don’t have any fortunes idea for you, but this is a really good idea. I might use it for my wedding

Sparkles says:

Ok- just a few to warm you up… But I was thinking beside fortunes–

Inspirational(?): ‘Stop searching forever. Happiness is just next to you.’ (that was in one of my fortune cookies recently- when I went out with my FH no less!)

Gratitude (?):
‘Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened’ Dr. Seuss.

Humourous (?):
Seeing how it’s the bridal toss and all the ladies will be hurling themselves like mad crazy to grab the bouquet- but little do they know your throwing ‘multiples’… with that in mind…

‘Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway’.

Romantic (?): ‘Wesley never dies’. (I love the princess bride)
‘One who admires you greatly is hidden before your eyes.’
‘Count your blessings by thinking of those whom you love.’

I like this one–
Chinese proverb; One generation plants the seed, the other enjoys the shade.

Or for the movie buffs: ‘Let’s hop on the good foot and do the bad thing!’ (Austin Powers)

=o) Do something fun! (Movie theme? Funny sayisms you have heard your FH say? Some funny thing you heard one of your BM say?Something that means something to you?)

The idea saw all the fortunes were love related, here are a few ideas:

You will marry your best friend
You will be the next to marry
You will marry your true love
You will marry the man you least expect
You will find true love at this wedding

My best fortune ever was the one that said, “You will make a great lawyer.”
It’s probably not good for a wedding. But its the only fortune cookie fortune that has ever rung true.
(I just finished my first year of law school, but I got the fortune like, four years ago.)

I think you could go with something sweet like, “you will find special love because you are a special person” or something. I don’t like the idea of anything that “promises” anything too specific….sure, some people won’t take them seriously, but some people will…

Look for happiness and you will find it. (From a cookie years ago - I still have it).

At a past job, I used to eat Chinese EVERY DAY. Seriously, I was addicted to their Hunan Tofu… brief reverie of delicious spicy brown sauce and crispy veggies

Anyway, some of my favorites that now live on my refridgerator are:

“If the shoe fits, it’s probably your size.”

“You are offered the dream of a lifetime. Say yes!”

and the greatest of all time:

“Do onto others as you like them to do onto you.” (LOL)

You can do fortunes in many categories like:

You will get a promotion soon

You will marry next.

You will have many children.

I took the cake charms from this fanTASTIC online irish store (http://www.lollysmith.com/viwecapuch.html) and then attached those to the bouquets with ribbon. I then kept the cards that came with the charms and after the bouquets were tossed I gave out the cards and announced what each meant.

It went over really well and I liked it so much better than just a printed fortune because the charms themselves were keepsake-y (sterling silver so could be worn as a necklace) as well as the bouquets (I had real flowers for everything but I made my fortune bouquets).

Good luck! Email me if you want pics!

I did this, but didn’t want to single out my single friends - so I invited all the ladies up to catch. The only change I made is to make sure the fortunes were not getting married related.

Everyone loved it! Especially my single friends!

I decided to undo the handle of my bouquet and throw it so the flowers would go everywhere. I did it to be mean and funny, but it turned out to be really nice because everyone who wanted a piece got it.

I’m actually doing this for my bouquet toss! I haven’t decided on the fortunes yet, though. I thought about writing a little note on each one….

Sue Walsh says:

Very cool idea! I didn’t do the bouquet toss-I always hated being forced to do it at every wedding I attended, and there really weren’t very many single women at my wedding aside from the flowergirl and 3 recently widowed women, so we did an anniversary dance instead and my bouquet went to the couple who had been married the longest (hubby’s aunt and uncle won-they’ve been together 54 years!)

18.
Corey says:

Oh! I forgot to mention that I as well included all the ladies in my toss and made sure the fortunes/charms were non-marriage specific. I thought about the anniversary idea but sadly my future father in law passed a month before our wedding and they would have been married the longest so it was best not to do that to not make a bigger point of him missing.
