My Imperfectly Perfect Wedding

June 6th, 2008 @ 12:30 pm by Mrs. Donut

Whenever I hear brides talk about their wedding day, the word “perfect” always seems to pop up. My wedding day was not perfect. Things did not go smoothly. For starters, I woke up that morning so anxious for everything to be “perfect” that I was sick. Really sick. So sick, in fact, that for a while I did not think that I was going to be able to make it down the aisle. The feeling horrible put me ever so slightly behind and I rushed through the morning trying to catch up. The church was locked when we arrived, the flowers were late, my grandmother’s corsage was missing, as were all of the mizuhiki knots I’d handmade for the ushers and readers. The bridesmaids walked down the aisle to the wrong music and some random guy in running shorts practically walked on my train as he followed me and Papa Belle into the church for our grand entrance.

When those doors opened, though, and I saw Mr. Donut standing at the altar, everything just… got better. I wasn’t nervous. I didn’t feel bad. I wasn’t even tired. In fact, I felt perfectly ready to be standing there making those vows. Nothing else mattered. All of those little things that I’d worked so hard on, that had occupied so much of my time - they were nice and all, but they were just details. The important thing was that I was marrying - finally and again - my best friend and, without a doubt, the love of my life. So, so what if it wasn’t perfect? It was still the most amazing and beautiful day of my life. So far, that is.

Beautiful! I know that not everything will go “perfect” on the big day, so it’s nice to hear your story and know that what matters the most are the vows you are about to say, and not everything else. I can’t wait to hear more about your wedding, that picture is stunning.

That is a great post. I’m glad everything worked out in the end. That picture is gorgeous regardless of all the things that went wrong! I can’t wait to see more.

Congratulations, Mrs. Donut! You look oh-so-dreamy in that picture. How were you finally able to shake off your anxiety? I have severe anxiety/IBS, and I’m so fearful of having an attack on the big day. How did you cope?

glad it turned out alright! the pic is gorgeous!

the same thing happened to my fiance’s cousin on her wedding day. she’s a bit of a perfectionist, and hence was terribly sick all morning on her wedding day. It was a catholic ceremony, where the bride and groom sometimes sit, so they ended up sitting the majority of the time as her ill morning had made her week. but after that, the stress passed and she had a fabulous time!

congrats to you!

Thank you for this. My pet peeve in this whole wedding process is people saying “Oh, I’m sure it will be perfect” and then looking at me like I’m a crazy woman when I say, “No. It won’t.” I just really don’t want the expectation of perfection from anyone, because I don’t want any disappointment.

Oh, I’m so glad to hear that you survived all of those little mishaps and realized how much they didn’t matter! Congratulations! I am so happy for you!

That last paragraph got me a little bit choked up! What inspiration to brides worried about their wedding day not going “just right!”

Thank you so much for this post!!! Very few brides admit that their day wasn’t perfect. Your honesty is refreshing!

It’s easy to get caught up in planning the “perfect” wedding but the reality is that things will go wrong and everything will be as it should be in the end. It took me a couple days to let go of the “should of” “could of” thinking after our wedding. In reflection, some of the best moments of the day were the random pauses and mixups that resulted in laughter…
