About Mrs. Cherry Pie

After visiting the rental company, meeting with our florist, and attending a tasting, we headed into Whitefish for my first hair and makeup trial at Sage Salon & Spa.

It was a real relief to have a trial so far in advance. For a long time, I had assumed that I wouldn’t be able to go out to Montana until September and so I scheduled what was to be my only trial on the day before the wedding.

Sage includes a trial in the price of their bridal hair and makeup ($60 apiece). Once I knew that I’d be driving out in May, I called Sage to see what it would cost to add a second trial - and I was delighted to hear that both trials would be free! I know that this isn’t standard, so I consider myself lucky, but they’ll be getting plenty of dough out of me for the travel and hourly rates to have them come out to Lake McDonald Lodge on the day of the wedding.

We got to Whitefish way before we were scheduled, so they started me early on my makeup. Here I am bare-faced (I had a stressful week, as evidenced by my pimply forehead):

Here I am at the makeup counter, getting my face done-up:

And here’s the final result:

(Don’t ask what I’m doing with my eyebrow in that pic… I have no idea.)

Make-n-it Up at Sage Spa and Salon : wedding makeup montana trial Glacier Spring08 58I’m pretty confident at doing my own makeup, so it was odd to have someone else applying their idea of what my makeup should look like. Even though the stylist followed my direction pretty well, I had to have her redo my blush after the first application because she gave me “apple cheeks” rather than setting the color higher up on my cheekbones, which is how I prefer.

Ultimately, I think I would change a few things. First, I think I’ll go for a more subtle lip and blush color. Something less… PINK and more neutral. I’ll probably have my own lip liner, lipstick, and gloss on hand on the day of, so maybe I’ll just hand them to her and see what she can do.

Secondly, I do love how the makeup brought out my eyes, but I feel like it might need just a little more something to make it pop, but I’m not sure what.

I don’t think the look is perfect, so I’m thankful I have another trial to work it out. Be honest. What works, and what doesn’t?

I really don’t want to look over-done, and I want to emphasize my features without glopping on gobs of makeup, but as an amateur photographer, I know how much makeup really helps with facial definition in photos.

Overall, I’m going for the fresh-faced, glowing, blushing bride look that is so popular these days. I just love these photos of Hayden Panettiere that I found today, so maybe I will try to copy that look (and the hair too!) at my next trial, but without quite as dark of a “smokey” eye - that look is best reserved for weddings less rustic and more elegant than mine!

Any advice for me?

I think false eyelashes would give it the POP you want. You look fabulous!

Ha! Clarita beat me to it– I was thinking false eyelashes too… maybe with a lighter eye shadow?

Somehow your pretty eyes just aren’t standing out the way they should. I think some of this is because of the dark liner on your bottom lids.

So, maybe a paler eye– with no dark liner on the bottom– and the fake lashes will give you the definition without obscuring your eye color.

Isn’t it funny how we’re stealing makeup looks from an 18 yr. old??? lol

I actually think you should do heavy eyeliner to make your eyes pop–google some pics of natalie portman at the recent cannes festival, and also angelina jolie, who has amazing blue eyes. I also think you may prefer a nice lighter/peacher bronzer rather than a blush.

First, let me say that you are beautiful, and looked gorgeous in your engagement photos, which is why I don’t think this makeup application is quite doing your beauty justice.

After reviewing the before and after, I think the way she did your bottom liner is making your eyes look smaller. I think that with some eyeliner on the top lids and some lashes, it would make your eyes stand out more.

I agree that the pink blush is not exactly the color for you - you need something warmer.

To avoid being too critical, I do like the lip color. It looks pretty natural in the pictures. I think you should definitely include some of your own makeup next trial so that it looks more like you.

Yup. False eyelashes will bring the drama without all the heavy smokey eye that you feel would make too elegant and less rustic. They really open your eyes and look fantastic in photos.

I would try a blush with more peach and bronze tones in it and work with some shadows from the Bobbi Brown Bronze Shimmer Brick to add some dimension.

you know, before i got to the end of your post, i was thinking that you needed a slightly heavier hand with the eye liner. perhaps a little liquid eyeliner up top and pencil on 2/3s of the bottom waterline (inner rim). Water resistant of course!

i also agree with the others re: falsies. not a full set, just a cluster or two at the very outer corners to give your eye some lift. that will probably give you the pop you are after.

i really like the lip color on you, but understand that for a rustic wedding this might be a little more “done’ that what you had in mind. since the eyes will be your high light feature, i believe the more nude lip you descibe will look great! as long as you have plenty of shine!

Thanks all, I’ll try a heavier liner on the upper eye, less on the lower eye, and maybe false lashes, though I am dubious about them– I don’t want them to irritate my eyes and I wear contact lenses. :)

@V: Not from an 18 year old, from her talented stylists! :D haha

Before I got to the end of the post I was thining false lashes as well. I just had them at my trial to make sure I liked them and they looked great!! The other secert, I got them at Walgreens and my make-up artist said those work just as well as the expensive ones.

Try it out at your next trial, it never hurts. By the way, you look beautiful in your pictures!!

false eyelashes…and i think hayden’s smoky eyes would work well at your wedding…she’s wearing a neutral lipstick/lipliner so it balances the heavy eye makeup…

If you do the false lashes, let us know how they worked out. I have the same doubts as I am also a contact weaer with sensitive eyes.

I tried false lashes at my MAC makeup trial… while I didn’t love them because they were HUGE, they didn’t irritate my eyes at all, and I’m a contact lens wearer too. I recommend Duo surgical adhesive for the glue- you can pick it up at the drugstore for $6-7. It lasts, isn’t irritating, and doesn’t stick to your real lashes so it can be peeled off easily. Good luck!

I agree with the ladies on the bottom eyeliner. If you want more emphasis on your pretty eyes, as opposed to your mouth, then I think you can shade your eyebrows a little more strongly…this will also help frame your face.
