No Hair Trials For Me!

Are you growing out your hair for the wedding?

Am I the only bride-to-be on the planet who is willing her hair not to grow anymore before the wedding? I had long hair once upon a time. However, I always wore it in a bun or in a french twist with one of those big claw clips to hold my hair up. Here’s me in 1999 as a bridesmaid. That’s pretty much how I wore my hair on a daily basis, wedding or not. The next logical step was to just do away with all that length since I never wore it down anyway.

I love having short hair. I especially like when it is short enough to air dry within minutes of stepping out of the shower and when it is short enough that I can get away with actual bed head as my hair style! No hair trials for me!

Over the winter, I decided to let my hair grow out just a couple of inches so that I wouldn’t look bald when wearing a winter hat (the first time I’ve had to wear a winter hat in years!) As soon as it was warm enough to not wear a hat, I had my hair chopped! But, in the meantime, people kept asking me if I was growing out my hair for the wedding. I guess it really is a rite of bridal passage.

A couple of weeks ago I was in San Diego and I visited my old hairdresser, Tina, who I hadn’t seen in a year! She’d been on maternity leave and then I’d left the country. Anyway, I knew that if anyone could thin out and texturize my hair the way I like it, it would be Tina.

Here’s a post-haircut photo at our shower in L.A. Too bad I wore my sunglasses on top of my head for the whole shower. *Note to self: Don’t do that at the wedding!*

So here’s hoping my hair doesn’t grow out too much in the next month.

Any other short haired brides out there?

Cute! I wish I could go short, but the wedding is outside and the humidity would make me look like I’m wearing a furry helmet. So I’m growing it out to pull off a specific style (cuz I can’t afford extensions!).

I’m chopping it off after the wedding, though. I can’t go too short because my hair frizzes like a mofo, but it’s ALREADY gotten up to 100 degrees here and I can’t imagine the hot summer with the coat/mane I have now! Ugh!

BRS says:

My hair is normally a little shorter then yours- but I grew it out to chin length for the wedding, and regret it all the time. I don’t look like me in the pictures.
Everyone told me I would want it longer to do stuff with, and for the life of me I can’t figure out why I believed them. Bridal brainwashing I guess.
I’m back to my short hair now, and much much happier.

I’m definitely not growing my hair out for the wedding. I have a faux hawk and I love having short hair. When I was a bridesmaid for my MOH, I had a buzzed haircut. I don’t understand this weird trend of growing hair out for the wedding. You don’t look like YOU then….I want to recognize myself in my wedding photos.

Your short hair is super cute, too.

Kakita says:

I totally agree with Loaf. I have short hair, I guess. I’m Black (from Montreal - go Canada!) and have natural hair that’s coily so it looks a lot shorter than it actually is, and it becomes a huge fro when I pick it out. My mom mentioned that she thought I should get a weave. Uhh, no way! She also mentioned fake nails. WTH?!!? Never in real life and never for my wedding. I just think it’s kinda funny to make yourself look totally different for one day, so no, I’m not growing out my hair for my wedding.

BTW, you are absolutely lovely. Just gorgeous!

squeakyfrommage says:

I’m actually bobbing my hair (currently past my shoulders) before the wedding. Otherwise it’s going to drive me nuts all night, and I’ll end up putting it in a ponytail like I do everyday anyway.

Sharmeen says:

I want to be a short hair bride someday. My current haircut makes me look like Audrey Hepburn … so I want to look just as elegant for my wedding. No growing out for me … no matter how much my mom will freakout about me not looking like a typical Indian bride.

Melissa B. says:

Miss GB, I used to have super long hair too, and now when I look back at old photos I cringe at how ratty and unkempt it looked! (Your long hair was way better than mine.) Now it’s a chin-length bob and it looks glossy and healthy and I love it.

And yet, I’m growing it out. The one nice thing about my long hair was being able to put it in a pretty updo and I’d love to do something “fancy” for my wedding. But if this hair-growing project turns out to be a nuisance I’m definitely open to saying “heck with this” and telling my stylist to chop it off.

Katie says:

This is my favorite bee post yet!!! I’m only five feet tall and have incredibly thick hair so I’ve had the “posh bob” haircut for years and won’t try anything else. But of course one of the first questions I started getting after we got engaged was “Are you going to grow your hair?” or “What are you going to do with your hair?” But I’m not changing a thing, if I did I wouldn’t look a thing like myself on my own wedding day. Here’s to short haired brides!!!

chibride says:

I can’t stand to wear my hair down for more than a minute at a time. It gets wrapped up in a bun or ponytail. So, yes, I’m growing it out so I can lop it all for a donation to Locks of Love. I can’t wait to be a short haired bride!

suzanno says:

The longest my hair has been in years is not quite to the shoulders, and right now it’s not quite to my jawline. There is no way I would grow it out. My sister did grow her hair out for her wedding - she normally has a very chic, short bob - and all I could think was that she looked like a college student again (and not in a good way). She also made all us BMs get our hair done professionally, so the end result is that everybody hates the photos - nobody looks remotely like themselves.

MsAnge says:

I actually got my hair chopped from mid-back length to shoulder length and added bangs shortly after I got engaged. I’d been itching to try something different with my hair for awhile (for my entire life my hair has been long and straight). I’d just graduated from school AND got engaged - I needed to do something to symbolize that, y’know? So it got chopped early enough that if I hated it I could grow it back out to something close to my usual style with ease. But I looooooooove my new haircut - it gets compared to Joan Jett’s hairstyle a lot, which is awesome. Getting this haircut was one of the best decisions I ever made!

I think you look adorable with short hair! It’s super cute.

And uhm, I’ll take any hair growing mojo that you won’t be needing…

I had been rocking a modified bob for a couple of years, but when we got engaged my mom said, “Aren’t you going to grow your hair long for the wedding and do a French twist or something?” That sounded so weird, it sealed the deal - I got my hair chopped 6 months before the wedding.

This was a good thing, because it was SO HOT on our July wedding day that I would have melted with long hair. Now I’m growing it out for Locks of Love (like chibride - yay!), but I’m counting down until it’s long enough to hack off again - I miss my short hair!!

Dianne says:

Well, I’m going to be a short hair bride, since I just finished with chemo in December. But I’m glad I’ll have some hair by my wedding in September! Actually, I would never ever have cut my hair short, but now I really LOVE it short. It looks spunky and makes me feel sassy and I save so much time getting ready every day! And the one thing you learn when you go through cancer is just how precious time is (think of all the things I could’ve been doing with all that time I spend blow drying and curling!)

Susan Eva says:

I’m going to be a short-hair bride for sure. The wedding is (gulp!) this Saturday. I just got a trim on Friday! Love short hair, it is chic.

Mary says:

my hair is shorter than yours and i am definitely keeping it short! i don’t feel myself without the short pixie cut. i’ve tried it. my dad isn’t the biggest fan, so i tried for him to wear it long. ya. it sucked. as soon as i cut it off, my four-years-of-lack-of-self-confidence went right into the trash with the locks.

to wear it somewhat different for the wedding, i’m planning on wearing a silk flower of sorts on the side somewhere behind an ear. the florist says a real flower won’t last. there are some awesome silk flowers on etsy that i’m keeping my eye on.
another alternative was a little headband/crown look - the hair vine. it looks like a beaded wire necklace, but you lay it on your head in headband fashion. i’ll probably buy one of both and see which works better at my fittings this august.

KEEP IT SHORT! your pretty new earrings will be hidden with long locks!

AliCherri1 says:

I’m keeping my hair short also… I’ve had short hair since I was 10 (except for a brief long hair stint in high school)… If I gre my hair out for my wedding I wouldn’t look like me.

18.
MissSauce says:

Totally agree. Definitely going to be a short-hair bride…I want to look like myself in those photos!

Re: earrings, I love it when my chandelier earrings stick out from under my short hair, but I find that it can get pretty uncomfortable to wear them when dancing like a crazy person. So, I’m undecided on the earring topic for the wedding. Maybe long for ceremony and then short for dancing!

missm says:

I love your short hair. My hair has been super long and crazy short with stops everywhere in between. Right now, it’s just past shoulder length with some fun layering to give it body, which is great - I get to air dry and go, but it still looks styled.

That said, the layers are problematic for the planned updo without spending half the night suffering from an attack of the killer wispy-bits. :( So, I’m technically growing out my hair for the wedding - but only a smidge. I’m also plotting to see if I can sneak out to my stylist in the two days between the wedding and the honeymoon to get it cut. :)

Yay, short haired brides unite! I’m so happy to know that you are out there with me rocking the short hair :)

@MsAnge: For years I carried this photo of Joan Jett with me when I got my hair cut! http://mpt.org/pressroom/pr/images/joanjett.jpg

@Dianne: Congrats with being done with chemo! I’m glad that you love your short hair, even though it wasn’t voluntary :)

@Susan Eva: Happy upcoming wedding day!

Kat says:

I’m not growing my hair out for the wedding, but that’s only because it’s already really long. I had short hair once & it was always in a fro because my hair is so thick, so that was a no-go. :)

Your hair looks amazing short, though!

22.
Sara says:

Heheh…my hair is about waist length and it will probably stay there for the wedding. It has been a long time since I have had short hair. My tips are also dyed red, so it will be fun showing them in my up do!

Vivian says:

Totally unrelated to your post, but I saw you and Miss GB.2 a couple weeks ago at Boudin in South Coast Plaza. Anyhow - I was shocked that I recognized the both of you but couldn’t remember from where for a good 5 seconds, and then you were gone. haha - we had a good laugh at my “celebrity sighting”.

btw - i think the short hair totally suits you! :)

lucy says:

i’ve always had short hair.. (about chin length).. I grew out my hair for the wedding (above the shoulders)..because I got into the whole idea that you need HAIR to do all those great looking styles. It was SO tough looking for a short-hair wedding hairstyle. I did finally find a cute short style and LOVED my hair on my wedding day. And a week later I chopped off my hair. :)

Miss Gingerbread says:

@Vivian: Wow, how funny! We stopped off at South Coast Plaza to visit the Brooks Bros. store on the way to our shower! Our friend who was driving jumped out of the car to look for a restroom and we were trying to find her. Haha. That’s why we ducked into Boudin for a second. Wish we had been able to say hi to you. Belated hello!

MaternityWeddingGuide says:

You look fabulous - and very feminine! I seem to remember another iconic beautiful bride - Princess Diana! And all the press coverage at the time about ‘will she / won’t she grow her hair?’ Just had all of mine chopped off too - for the very same reasons as you and it’s so liberating! Stick to what YOU want!
