Ode to Damask

O Damask, thou popular bridal pattern;
Your maze of flourish is mesmerizing.
Teal and Brown, or Black and White,

Or Green and White, or Red and White.
With hues of wedding bliss,
You decorate so many wedding details!

Wondrous fabric of yonder years -
How I love thee, how I love thee!

Ok, so I can’t write an ode like Keats worth a darn, but I, like Miss Pomegranate and Miss Sundae, am a Damask Bride. Finding this blue and brown Damask from Michael Miller started my love affair with the pattern. I love Damask because of the duality in the tone — old and modern at the same time. (To be honest, a lot about our wedding screams duality, which I can attribute to being a Gemini.)

I wanted to incorporate this fabric somewhere into the wedding, but was a little hesitant. Damask is a very bold pattern — I didn’t want it to overpower other elements in the wedding and I wasn’t sold that it totally fit into our rustic, elegance look. At first I wanted to make table runners, but then decided against it after seeing the centerpiece designs from our florist and realizing that the Damask would take away from the flowers. So, after much deliberation I thought,” Why not drape Damask linens over the bar tables?” Perfect!

Above is an inspiration for the bar tables. I think this will be a great way to give a little character to the cocktail/bar lounge, which is adjacent to the dining room. I bought this really beautiful Espresso Ribbon at Crate and Barrel when they were discounting all their Christmas gift wrap for super cheap to tie the base. I also found these red candle holders at Hobby Lobby for $2 a piece. However, this isn’t the only place I am using a touch of this wondrous pattern. I’ll give you a little hint: invitations. I’m designing them right now, and hopefully will be printing them on my Gocco this weekend. Stay tuned!

Are you a Damask bride? What color of Damask and how are you incorporating it into your wedding?

Hello group, my name is lou, and I am a damask bride :)

At least, I think I am … haven’t actually made any final decisions yet. Main colours will be forest green and deep pink, with touches of black and white damask on the ‘non-natural’ elements.

Haven’t fully decided on how I’ll use it yet, but ideas so far are …
- invitations (although will probably be black and white swirls rather than actual damask … haven’t found many damask invitations I like so far)
- candle holders
- name cards, table numbers etc
- card box
- favours

I am totally a damask bride! From Save the Date to Wedding Programs…everything is going to have that lovely pattern. Our damask is a sage green with chocolate brown. I’ve accented it with polka dots and stripes in those two colors plus a burnt pumpkin organge for our fall wedding.

-Lou, we got our damask invitations from papeteriestore.com and they will totally customize the colors for you.

I’m a black and white damask bride. So far it’s been incorporated into (or is planned to be incorporated into): invitations, programs, table runners (same as Miss Sundae’s), bathroom trays/baskets, card box, guestbook, cocktail umbrellas, cake, seating signs, and quite possibly something to do with the flower girls’ and ringbearers’ attire. My accent color is red.

I’m trying to be a damask bride but have had zero luck in finding a teal with black damask pattern- anywhere. :(

Mimsy says:

Added to say- I want a deep, saturated teal but bright as well. I’ve found silks this color, but no damask.

I just want to add a hint of damask to the reception tables and the menu and escort cards. So far, no luck.

I think I started out being a Damask bride, but found it too much for me to pull together. I was using that exact color and pattern of teal and brown that you have pictured….I found the material at Michael Levine in downtown L.A. and loved it….but alas, I let it go. Thankfully, I didn’t buy a surplus amount of the material.

Hello there!!! I’m not a bride, but I’m in love with weddings. I happened to be browsing some of the bridal websites, and came upon this site that had nothing other than damask. I remembered that you’d been toying with the idea, so I thought this would be helpful to you. There’s an idea on this website for a damask inspired photo book. This could be a nice touch for you. Enjoy!!!

I was a black and white damask bride (08/08/08) and had a heck of a time trying to find the right table decor. I ended up having to buy the damask material directly from Waverly and had a local seamstress put 20+ table runners together for me. It was beautiful. I am willing to part with them if anyone is interested. The runners fit 60″ tables which sat 8. I have pics if you are interested. The fabric and seamstress cost just over $400 (inclusive of the head table runners too). I would be willing to cut the price in half. Cheers!

@Jessica Splawinski: Sorry, but you’ve got the wrong bee. Mrs. Pomegranate and Mrs. Sundae had black and white damask runners for their weddings. You should ask them. I actually didn’t end up using the damask fabric.
