About Mrs. Canary

The Long and the Short

June 10th, 2008 @ 2:09 pm by Mrs. Canary

After enduring this past weekend’s heat wave, my desire to add a getaway dress to my bridal trousseau has been affirmed. I had my first alteration fitting for my gown a few weeks ago and it wasn’t nearly as hot as this weekend, but I had that uncomfortable not so fresh feeling and we all know about my sweat confession. We also plan on hanging out with friends at a Manhattan lounge or bar after the wedding and like Miss Toucan, I wanted to also have a nice dress to bid farewell to our guests at the end of the wedding but still be in party mode for the after-party events. So in an effort to stay cool and still feel bridal, I set off on a search for a short dress.

In another one of my alternative wedding fantasies, I would rock a fabulous vintage-styled short dress from Stephanie James or this polka-dotted party frock from Michelle Roth. But alas, both kill the stay cool criteria, so I headed to BCBG for the classic standby in no sweat fashion– chiffon dresses. Of course I coveted the Weddingbee favorite, the cute flower applique taffeta number below, but I tried it on but wasn’t feeling very fabulous in it. Plus, it was a bit constricted and hence, not very cool.

Then I happened upon the perfect off-white silk chiffon trapeze dress. It fit wonderfully and was very flattering. Most of all it was well ventilated! I loved that I could also accessorize with my birdcage veil and gold heels, stay cool, and still look like a bride. Though the $380 price tag was not doing it for me… so I immediately went on eBay and discovered the fabulous BCBG seller, TeresaHilton. I found my dress in my size at over 50% off the retail price. Score! If you’re on the hunt for a bargain BCBG dress… don’t forget to check out this seller. My dress came in pristine condition with tags and all.

Also, BCBG is currently having a great sale on some of last season’s dresses. My particular faves are from their runway collection, many of which are 50-70% off! Most of them would make great rehearsal dinner, bridesmaid, or just because summer dresses.

Any other BCBG fanatics out there? What are some of your latest dress finds?

Love BCBG dresses — I’m wearing one to our rehearsal dinner that I got last summer on super sale at Macy’s :)

Well, we know how I feel about short dresses! Haha. I’m sure you’ll enjoy having something fun and bridal to change into.

A random tid bit from my “after party,” which was really just 16 of us going out for drinks after the reception was over. While walking into a bar two drunk girls (not likely 21+) walked passed me and one said loudly, as drunk girls will do, “Who does she think she is? Cinderella?!” It was classic, but that’s the risk you take with a short dress - they might not be sure you’re a bride.

Miss Canary,
Sounds like you are having an afternoon ceremony and then lunch reception?
I am doing the same and was wondering, who did you invite to the afterparty? Was this done by word of mouth? What about out of town guests (ie. relatives - club/bar scene not their thing)? Any advice would be appreciated.
thanks!

Hi Bumble! I am actually having an evening ceremony but we are the first of our friends to get married so everyone is quite anxious to party. We are just very casually getting the word out via word of mouth (we haven’t even picked the place yet!) And it’s probably the most die-hard of party folks who will come. Mr. Canary and I probably won’t stay long, but our friends (some who haven’t seen each other in years!) will probably stay out til the crack of dawn!
