About Mrs. Cherry Pie

After my makeup trial (which was fun but in need of some fine-tuning), I moved on to my first hair trial, also at Sage Salon & Spa.

I truly love getting my hair done… it’s so soothing and relaxing. But this time I was more than a little tense. I still didn’t know whether I wanted my hair up, down, or half-back. After showing my stylist my hair inspirations and talking about the location and qualities of our wedding, we decided that an up-do would be best.

The first deciding factor was that if there is wind or weather, an up-do would (hopefully) stay in place longer and function better than leaving my hair down. Secondly, an up-do would give me a more functional place to hold a veil, should I so choose. Finally, talking about styles helped me realize that I really did like the classic look of pinned-up wedding hair.

To help get a feel for what I did want, we talked about the things that I didn’t want. I told her that I didn’t want my hair to look too prom-like, or too “severe,” which meant avoiding high, piled-on the head, tight, scalp-pulling ’dos.

I said that I fancied something whimsical, a little loose, soft, and feminine. I wanted to try a style with a side-part, like Miss Petunia, gathered low on my head.

So we had a first go of it, and she tried this approach with the top layer of hair pieced into three parts, the side pieces twisted near the nape of my neck and all gathered into messy curls at the back:

SIDE 1:

SIDE 2:

I think you can see from my face in the photos that I wasn’t super thrilled. It just didn’t work for me. Aside from baring my obvious desperate need for a full foil (see the nice dark parts on the side of my head?) this style sort of made me feel like Princess Leia. I think it was the twists. They were a no-go. And it was messy and loose. I know it’s a trial but I want to at least get an idea of the final product.

I mentioned my apprehension to my stylist and she set out to tighten it up. She took out the twists, secured the sides, gave it a bit of volume, and cleaned up the back. The end result was (I think) a much better product with a fun little button:

SIDE 1:

SIDE 2:

I thought this second style was cute, but it was still kind of messy and loose and it started to fall out in less than half an hour. (Not to mention during the disastrous misadventure only an hour later.. but I’ll get to that.)

I still had that niggling feeling that something wasn’t right. Maybe it just wasn’t me? Maybe I still didn’t know WHAT I wanted. Well, thank goodness for trials, right? I’ve still got another one on the night before my wedding and I’ll try and try again, as they say.

Since coming home, I’ve found a few new hairstyles that have tickled my fancy:

As mentioned in my makeup trial post, I love the front of this style on Hayden Panettiere. I think that it’ll hold together nicely while the loose bangs give it some whimsy. I don’t mind a bit of a trim before the wedding as I’m planning to continue the Bee trend of chopping it all off afterwards anyway.

I’m digging the bun/chignon back in this next photo. It’s got room for a flower, hairpin, brooch, or veil. It also looks like it should hide hairpins and stay together much better than the piecey bits in my trials.

So that’s what I’m going for next time.

I have to admit that I’m still really nervous that I’ll never find something that suits me, or that my next trial will suck and my day of hair will be awful. It’s not that big of a deal because I’m sure it will turn out OK in the end - I’ve got nimble hands and skilled ladies at my beck and call. But still… eek. Any words of reassurance? Comments on the styles & trials above?

I think you look beautiful with both styles, so either way would be fabulous! I still worry about how my hair is going to end up b/c I haven’t been 100% on any of my trials. In the end, I’m sure we will all find our perfect for us styles!

I really like the 2nd one (esp. the button) — but if was falling down - that is a “no-go”.

Here is the question - do you usually wear you hair down or part down? I almost always wear my hair down, and I realized that although an elegant up-do was a cool idea for my wedding, it’s just not “me” which I why I’m going with a 1/2 up do.

i actually like that they are loosey-goosey and kind of messy. Both are definitely “styled” so it in now way looks like your do was thrown together. Of course, you do want to _feel_ pretty, I just want you to know that I already think you look the part.

I think you should try a 1/2 up 1/2 down do–you can get the volume and whimsy with pieces falling in the front but have the security of it just being down in the back–nothing to worry about since it can’t fall out!

Lady, you are freaking GORGEOUS! I prefer the second, but you look fabulous either way.

I think the second one is nice - looks like a flower! you wouldn’t need any accessories with that, and it might work well with your rustic wedding, no? Also - keep in mind that trials (even though some stylists charge the same price - note my bitterness) are nowhere near the quality of what you’d get day of. It would not be so haphazard and messy, and of course they use a lot of hairspray as well. Maybe you should do a center part to get the Hayden Panatierre style you like. Either way, you look beautiful!

The back is interesting, but the front doesn’t look special enough, know what I mean?

I think both styles are lovely - definitely relaxed but still put together.

But I DO know what it’s like to not quite get what you’re looking for, and by all means try again! It looks to me like you’re in competent hands, so I’m confident that the photos you’ve posted here will communicate what you’d like. I certainly wouldn’t worry about your hair “suck” or be “awful!”

I’m sure whatever you guys do will look stunning on you. You’re already starting at stunning. Already stunning in a Pronovias Diamante gown in Montana in love on your wedding day after any amount of primping is bound to knock everyone’s socks off, lady! You don’t have to worry about that!

I think you idea of Hayden’s front and the back from the last pic with the combs is right on.

Your stylist can always “tease” your hair a little and THEN smooth it back, so that you avoid the severeness of a tightly pulled back look and you’ll get “softness” without it being too messy or prone to fly-away/fallout.

Having baby-fine hair myself, I can tell you that the “tease” is where it’s at. ;)

no thanks

I like the button one. Maybe when you smile at a hairstyle you’ll know you found “the one”. Pretty somber right now.

Hi there! Hairstylist from Chicago area checking in again. Personally, I think with your hair I’d consider a full FULL half up half down do. The styles that you have chosen are pretty, but i think more volume would be more flattering on you. (Also, the inspiration pic you’re going for next time is pretty, but from what I can tell I think your hair is too short. I’d consider a hairpiece to create that look in the back, they make some very nice and reasonabley priced pieces that be just clipped in for the day of, which is what I will be doing for my wedding. When intertwined with your own locks, it stays in FOREVER!!!!)

I love the side and back view of #2, it is simple yet very elegant. But I completely agree with beanchar and Anna. Teasing/volume is wear it out. I have simialr hair to yours and a little teasing in the front/top goes a LONG way and I love that it will then stay all day without going flat!
