My First Gocco Experience

June 11th, 2008 @ 4:42 pm by Mrs. Coconut

I owe many thanks to my fellow bees for introducing me to the Gocco. Let me explain. Like I’ve said, when I first got engaged, I didn’t really know how to plan and I certainly wasn’t aware of any blogs. Truth be told, I didn’t even read blogs and for the most part I still think they can be a dangerous waste of time. But if you know which ones to read, they can be essential to planning the wedding of your dreams.

I wish I could recall the first instance I laid eyes on Weddingbee. It was probably a google search of some sorts. I started reading articles by Mrs. Lemon and Miss (no, Mrs.) Penguin. If you don’t know what a gocco is and you want to be inspired, read through their posts. You will have to get one.

Soon after discovering Weddingbee and the gocco, I discovered Etsy. Oh yes. I can’t fully describe what Etsy means to me, but if you haven’t been there, I promise you won’t be disappointed! (*No, I’m not being paid with etsy goods for this!)

Back on topic, I bought my gocco from Etsy, but I wasn’t quite ready to do anything too critical. Thus, the birth of bridesmaid cards. This is a little embarrassing - because I didn’t have any extra ink at this point, I didn’t even cut any paper. I actually bought plain cards from Michael’s. The point of saying this: if you’re discouraged from buying a gocco because you’re not that creative or you just don’t get it, it’s okay. I didn’t quite get it either and I’m not a graphic designer! The motto is true, practice makes perfect! Please see the evidence, below!

My first attempt: Cute, but boring.

My second attempt: Save-the-Dates! Cute, but still not great. (Don’t worry, I’ll post more about them later!)

My third attempt: My sister’s bridal shower invitation! See, it’s getting BETTER!! (Again, I’ll post more on this, too!)

Have you tried your hand at the gocco yet?

I made my save the dates…first attempt was definitely a flop, but the second design worked great. I did gold print on cream paper. I heart gocco! Need more practice though. So far I have only done one color.

I love DIY Scrapbooking and anything to do with my cricuit machine, yet I never heard of a gocco until I found weddingbee (love it here) and now I want one so bad yet unsure on how to use. Cant wait for your other post. I will be checking out Miss Lemon and Mrs Penguin’s blogs. Thanks

What program do you use to design your save the dates and invitations? I’ve really wanted a gocco ever since discovering Weddingbee and Mrs. Penguin as well!

I have resisted the siren song of the Gocco thus far, but am REALLY tempted to get one to do fabric printing.

for a “novice” you did an phenomenal job with the design, layout and printing! like lhm11271983 (wow that’s a handful :) ) I am curious what program you use. Illustrator?

@lhm11271983 and mrsbic: Yes, I use Illustrator to design them, however, I don’t think it’s necessary. I could have made both in Word, but the layers feature in Illustrator makes things much easier!

that looks great! i have a gocco from etsy too and have planned to make my wedding invites with it. thats my project for next week. they are great because you can use hand drawings or print outs for design. i also have fabric ink and plan to make sachets with it. its pretty fun once you get over how much each screen costs when you mess it up. you have to forget about cost for a few minutes!

Thanks so much for posting your images! It gives me hope that even I can do it. I’m an accountant (the farthest you can get from a graphic designer!) and didn’t think I could do it without design experience. Any design tips you could give would be appreciated!
