About Mrs. Bubblegum

The Bubblegums have returned from Bar Harbor, equipped with all sorts of Bar Harbor minimooning advice*!!

Do: Stay Downtown –
The main part of Bar Harbor is about, oh, I’d say… one… square foot? So there are really only a few hotels that are right there in the thick of it. Others are definitely walkable, but there’s something gratifying about walking out of your hotel room and onto the dock. The two big ones are The Bar Harbor Inn (where we stayed) and The Harborside Hotel. In addition, there are all sorts of cute little inns – a couple I remember seeing downtown were called the Ullikana Inns - like DOLLHOUSES.

Also, if you can find one, a room on the ocean is clutch. Here we are on our balcony, ocean at our backs:

Don’t:
Go to the Bar Harbor Farmer’s Market –
Note that I am making a ridiculous overstatement – however, when I grabbed the brochure from the hotel lobby, I was super excited for this farmer’s market. After the first day I’d spent in Bar Harbor, I couldn’t imagine it being anything but amazing. Well, it was slightly less amazing than I had hoped – but maybe we just got there late.

Do: Go on a Lobster & Seal Watch – This was soooo much fun. It was about a two hour tour, there were only nine people on our boat, we got to hold lobsters (and then set them free!), and then we got to see all sorts of ridiculously cute seals. We had TONS of fun.

Don’t: Go on a Whale Watch – Okay, so maybe this was just my experience. I hear that a lot of people really enjoy whale watches. After our success on the other water tour, we were PSYCHED to get back out. In fact, I belieeeve I told Mr. BG that I had not yet had my fill of the sea. However, it was not a pleasant experience. We boarded an hour early, baked under the hot sun in a giant aluminum can before taking off, saw no whales, got nauseous, and wasted 5 hours. Blech.

Do: Watch the Sunrise on Cadillac Mountain – We woke up at 3:50, we hauled our arses out there, and it did not disappoint. Pictures!!

The sunrise:

Don’t: Forget a Sweatshirt – Even if the forecast says 90 (which ours did), bring warm clothes! On the water, it gets much, much colder – even sitting by the water. Silly me, my dinky little shrug of a sweatshirt was not enough, and I ended up paying $50 for a sweatshirt in the hotel gift shop. Do not make my mistakes. J

Do: Drive Park Loop Road at Acadia National Park – By far, this was the best thing we did. There is a road that loops around the park with different places to pull off to see the different sites – and there’s so much to do!We went to the Wild Gardens, almost accidentally hiked Mt. Dorr (there were stone steps that we took for quite a while thinking that they led to a spring… they did not), stopped at a sand beach, and happened upon the CUTEST little restaurant in the world for afternoon tea (Jordan Pond House Restaurant). Absolutely, 100%, the best thing to do in Bar Harbor.

Here are an assortment of the places we went that day:

Overall, despite the don’ts, this Bubblegum is giving one big glowing endorsement for minimooning in Bar Harbor, Maine!!

*Advice is based on three and a half days of experience. The Bubblegums are not responsible for un-fun that is had as a result of said advice.

A couple footnotes -

The fact that they are advertising the farmer’s market as an attraction cracks me up. BUT, to be fair, it is very early in the season yet and the local fruits & veggies have not started to come in yet. July and August would be better times for this.

Whale watches - are always hit or miss, but again, i think this is more about timing. Later in the summer and into fall there is much more whale traffic.

Absolutely bring layers. If you do forget something warm, buy it in one of the tourist traps, I mean shops, downtown. The BH Inn gift store would be overpriced.

I would like to add a do - if you have more time, do plan on hiking/biking/doing a carriage ride in the park. The Loop is the primary attraction, but barely scratches the surface of the Park.

Lovely! Acadia is where we will be spending our actual honeymoon (though I am hoping in a few years we can take a big trip and leave the country :D). I’ve only been there once before, but it was for two weeks so here’s what I would add/comment on (and things we are planning on doing)
-definitely go to Jordan Pond House to eat! We had tea there and dinner and both were excellent. Love the popovers, and the blueberry cheesecake is a must.
-hiking and biking! I’ve hiked Bubble Rock and Gorham Mountain Trail and both are great hikes. If you are adventurous and the falcons aren’t nesting, there’s also Precipice and Beehive. I am trying to get my courage up to do these but I do not like heights…
-go swim in one of the ponds that allows swimming! (be prepared for a chilly dip, though!)
-if you can, rent a small boat and take it out to cranberry island. A friend did this for us and we all went with him and it was the best time. But you might want to bring an extra set of clothing sealed in something waterproof. And of course consult the maps about shallow water/rocks/etc or have a pro take you. I really do think that is one of the best things we did, though- we saw the seals too :)
-Thunder Hole is pretty cool, and there are usually tide pools around where you can see the urchins and all the other small animals
-rent a house to stay in. There’s lots of beautiful houses for rent and with a whole week you can do so much in Acadia - and it’s cheaper than a hotel!
I’m glad you had fun, and I can’t wait to go!

Glad to hear you have a nice time. My husband and I spent our honeymoon in Bar Harbor, and had a wonderful time!! It was chilly, but beautiful in October.

oooooh I LOVE Acadia! Glad you had fun! Mr. Tiramisu and I spent a few days there the first summer we were dating, and I have such great memories of it. It’s worth the trip for the popovers at Jordan Pond House alone!

Thanks for the great tips on Bar Harbor! While not a honeymoon locale for me (my FI and I are going to Lake Tahoe/Peru), I am going there on a roadtrip with a girlfriend this summer. After reading your post, I can’t wait!

Third vote for the Jordan Pond House! Also, I stayed at the Cadillac Motel - it was paid for by the people I was working for, so I don’t know how much it cost, but it was great… kitchenette, comfy beds, and slightly off the beaten path, so it’s VERY quiet. *And* I found a kitten! :-D

Oooh…also DO hike up the Beehive at Acadia National Park and definitely have french onion soup at the “Log Cabin” resteraunt. (I think that’s the name…

One note that Mrs. BG forgot. If you are doing the Park Loop Road, make sure to stop at Otter Point as well. This was my favorite stop on the Loop. Very cool, open view with lots of room to sit. It’s much cooler than the rest of the loop on a hot day as well. Very peaceful, especially if you’re the only one there.
