Semi-DIY 5 Hour Tea Lights

June 12th, 2008 @ 10:33 am by Mrs. Green Tea

I needed long burning tea lights for the centerpieces. What I found were pricey and/or did not come in red. Your standard no frills tea light runs cheap with a usual burn time of 2-3 hours, I think.

I bought five 30 count boxes of red scented tea lights from Pier1 when I stumbled upon them on final clearance at 90% off ($6 became $0.6 - that’s $0.02 per candle). I thought that I’d just deal with the given 2-3 hours. FFIL happens to be a candle expert, and we asked him if he could melt some of them to the brim of the tin container in order to extend their burn time. He came up with a much more genius idea:

That’s right, just stack ’em baby*, virtually no work involved. Worried about spillage, you say? We tested it:

Uh-huh, not a drop**. Burn time: 5 hours 9 minutes. Cost: $0.04 per candle.

* Most tea lights are filled to the brim which obviously won’t work, but Pier 1 seems to consistantly carry these above which go on sale all the time for 20+% off. They carry a variety of colors depending on the season.
** I expected some spillage during actual usage, but they are contained so it’s fine as long as it’s not excessive.

Cheap Tip: Keep in mind things you need but not necessarily in a hurry. Check out prices for those items at stores you visit anyway. You never know what good deals you might find! :)

I bought tealights at Michaels that said the approximate burn time was 4-6 hours. During my test run the tealight lasted about 4.5 hours.

What a GREAT idea to ensure that your tealights last throughout the entire reception! LOVE IT!

*sneaks in* have you tested the scent of the candles while eating a meal? I just ask, because many times the scents can affect your taste buds and really alter a meal, and I would hate for that to happen! *sneaks away*

Great idea!
I also bought red scented tealights from Michaels but had to return them as they were too strongly scented for centerpieces. Any idea where I could get unscented red tealights?

I tried that but the wick on my tealights ended up being too short to burn. IKEA’s tealights burn for 4 hours, so I just bought those and hope no one will notice that last hour.

I’m also going to sneak in, a la Mrs. Lemon, and muse ‘aloud’ for a minute. I hope that you have ensured that your guests don’t have scent allergies, as I would not be able to stay at your wedding if there were scented candles lit (and I’m sure I’m not the only one)

I also tried this out (I saw it on your blog and loved the idea) but, like rzblna found, the wicks were too short. And I did use the candles from Pier 1. Miss GT — did you encounter this problem at all? I even tried cutting the wax around the wick but ended up with a crumbly mess..

@Mrs. Lemon: @Melissa: I didn’t think of either of your points before… the reception is outdoors though and there’s usually a breeze so maybe tht helps. Mr.GT & I dine out on our patio often so we’ll try it out next time we do. Thanks for the headsup girls!

@GetMarried4Less: ‘2 frikking cents a candle y’all! That’s like… almost FREE!’ - stop it, you sound like me.

@Diane: Pier1 carry a couple different types of tealights, it may only work if it’s the same kind (see pic of box in my post, they’re like this: http://www.pier1.com/TopMenu/Products/tabid/260/Default.aspx?task=viewproduct&id=458&urlname=pink-honeysuckle-candles) Sorry about the crumbly mess, I feel partially responsible!

@Renee: you’re pretty fierce yourself making that judgement after only 3 posts! (yes, I realize I’m basing mine after one comment :P)

@Shay: I will send FFIL love for you, and make sure you note all the commenters’ notes and suggestions from above! Good luck with it!

Does anyone know of any online retailers with great wholesale pricing for candles (specifically floating ones)? Good shipping rates are key since I live all the way out in Hawaii . . .
