About Mrs. Pineapple

Specs!

June 13th, 2008 @ 2:25 pm by Mrs. Pineapple

Last summer my car was broken down — again. This time a squirrel had built a nest on my engine block while it sat unused for two months. What I had on my hands was a dead battery and a whole lot of squirrel hair under my hood.

The squirrel nest, on a road in a neighborhood called Squirrel Hill, go figure.

I had my car parked a little ways away because parking at our house was very limited. Mr. Pineapple was out of town on a business trip. My plan was to use his car to pick him up from the airport. As I was heading out, I realized I had left something in my car that I needed, so I drove to my car in Mr. Pineapple’s car. As I pulled up behind my car I hit a piece of metal sticking out of the curb and BAM his tire explodes. Not only that, but I dented the rim too. Meanwhile, Mr. P is at the Philly airport and his flight has been canceled. He and his coworkers ended up renting a car and driving back to the burgh. Which worked out on my end since I had destroyed both of our cars.

The next day I went to the eye doctor. Go figure, Miss Running-Cars-Into-Curbs needed glasses. So, almost a year later I am pretty used to my specs (well, that is when I remember to leave the house with them). I definitely think they change the way I look. I am still not sure I want to wear them for the wedding though. They kind of drop low and “cut my eye in half.” I think I am going to give contacts a test run soon and see if that is an option for the big day, but I haven’t decided.

my “goggles”

I could also just go completely corrective eye wear free. My eyes aren’t that bad. Everything just looks kind of wet, like I am swimming in a pool with my eyes open, when I don’t have them on. Although, I may actually want to see my groom as I begin my walk do the aisle.

You don’t see many brides in glasses. So, I did a google search and found this post from Offbeat bride, Brides in Glasses. Some of those glasses make for hottie brides. Mr. Pineapple, who has been wearing glasses since forever, will be sporting his new copper specs.

So ladies, I am asking the same question once asked by Mrs. Kiwi… glasses, contacts or nothing? Anyone opting to wear their glasses on the big day?

I’m allergic to contacts, so I usually don’t wear mine, but I’m going to for the wedding. My eyes usually get dry after a few hours though, so I’ll probably switch to glasses mid-way through the reception (plus I look more like myself with glasses).

Didn’t Mrs. Kiwi wear her glasses for part of her wedding?

Didn’t Mrs. Gummi Bear wear glasses too? Or was that her fiance? Sorry, can’t remember. But I think glasses are cute! If they are “you” then you should wear them. :)

Contacts! If you aren’t allergic to them that is. You should be able to see everything on your wedding day.

I’m not waering my glasses, I think I look better without them. So I’m trialling contacts at the moment and they’re pretty comfortable.

Mrs Gummibear rocked the bride in glasses look and made me have second thoughts about mine!

I’ll be rockin’ my contacts.

Though by the end of the day, the glasses may come out of their hardcase!

I am actually getting LASIK surgery next week, so I don’t have to wear my glasses to walk down the aisle! May sound crazy, but I despise wearing glasses…and my contacts have been causing me major problems over the past year. So here I go! You look awesome in your glasses!

contacts! Mostly so you can see your whole face, and no reflective issues in photos! I love glasses. I just think that for a wedding, everyone would like to see your pretty eyes and whole face! That’s just what I would do…

I think you look great in glasses, but if you want contacts I highly recommend Acuvue Oasys with Hydraclear. I’ve been wearing contacts for 13 years and these are by far the best and most comfortable! Ask you eye doctor for a trial pair before you buy, or if you have to buy ask if you can return any unopened boxes. If you haven’t ever worn contacts…give yourself some time to get used to them!

i vote no glasses. my sister wore hers in her wedding, and a lot of the pictures were glarey and you couldn’t see her eyes or the emotion in them. If you can avoid it, i’d say go without glasses.

I have primarily worn contacts for ten years, although I do break out my glasses (when I’m home or just running out to the store). I’ll be wearing contacts for my wedding.

You’re fortunate in that your prescription doesn’t affect how your eyes photograph. I have a killer prescription that distorts my eyes and make a pronounced glare in photos. So really, you can choose whatever you want! Hooray for you!

I have two slightly opposing pieces of advice:

1) You should look like yourself at your wedding and be comfortable with how you look and feel. If you are an everyday glasses wearer, than you won’t necessarily look like yourself and you may not even feel like yourself. So if you’re considering wearing contacts for ONLY the wedding, then I would suggest sticking with glasses.

2) Contacts wear pretty easily, but there is a period of getting comfortable with them. So if you want to make the transition to wearing contacts part-time or all the time, then I suggest starting earlier rather than later.

I suggest trying them out now - if you like them, wear them to the wedding. If you don’t, you will know you prefer your glasses.

I think ladies in glasses are cute by the way (particularly Miss Cherry Pie) :)

just a thought for my fellow contact wearers - put them in as late as possible, to avoide any drying towards the end of the day.

also, pack extra. my lens broke in my hand on my wedding day. darn acrylic nails! (i’m a nail biter, so it was an adjustment)!

I say definitely try out some contacts. Being able to see you groom and of course all the details you’ve worked so hard on is really important.I recently saw pics of a wedding where the bride wore glasses and I must admit I was a bit distracted by them. I think it can definitely work it just depends on the glasses.

I also can get away with not wearing them. So I didn’t wear them for the ceremony or formal pictures but once we got to the reception they went on.

I think brides with glasses look quirky, in a good way! I’ve been wearing contacts for years and wouldn’t be able to find my wife-to-be on our wedding day if I went without them. Even though your vision is no where near as bad as mine, I’d strongly recommend wearing either contacts or glasses. You want to see all of your hard work, all of your happy guests, and your new husband clearly!

We’re both wearing specs on the big day because we hate contacts :) I just had my eye exam yesterday and picked out some new glasses that I’m excited about. What was not so exciting was finding out that I have saccade dysfunction, which would explain my headaches and tizzy fits when I read too much or work on my art for too long.

Yay glasses geeks!!

contacts. They don’t fog up when you tear up, they don’t get smudged AND You Can See! I got my glasses when I was 13 years old and then spent countless years squinting b/c of my ridiculous vanity that thought squinty was somehow less ugly than glasses (even though I had very nice glasses). Now, I love my glasses but for your wedding day, I recommend contacts. You want to see everything and you don’t want to worry or feel selfconscious about your glasses.

@Miss Candy Corn: so I googled saccade dysfunction and this was the first thing that came up: “Saccade dysfunction associated with chronic petrol sniffing.” Are you a gas sniffer? ;)

@Miss Pineapple:

hahahah I tried to Google it to explain what it is to a friend and I came up with the same results…I promise I’m not a gas sniffer, apart from when Mr. CC lets one loose, and that’s never any fun.

Anywho, here is the definitioooooooon (rather boring): a condition in which the individual’s ability to scan along a printed page and move his eyes from point to point is inadequate. Symptoms include frequent loss of place while reading, skip or transpose words, and have difficulty comprehending because of an inaccurate eye movement. Vision therapy is an effective treatment option.

You always hear this advice about your makeup & hair, that you should look like you. Mr Pineapple wants to see you that day, not someone unfamiliar. I say go with how you normally look, if you wear them all the time, then wear them, if you wear them only a few hours out of the day, then wear contacts. I have been wearing contacts since the 5th grade so it’s not a big deal to me, but I know a lot of people who do have issues with contacts. When I cry my contacts dry out pretty bad, so remember some good eye drops if you do go the contact route.

Hell no to the wearing of glasses! I hate my glasses. I got them when I was nine, was teased at school for being a nerd (oh wow, nerds wear glasses, kids are so intelligent), and when I got my contacts at age 16 I didn’t touch my glasses for seven years. at 23 I didn’t have a job so I couldn’t afford to buy contacts, so I went and got new glasses. Once I could re-afford contacts, I got them, but I’ve gotten into the lazy habit of wearing the glasses when I don’t care about my appearance - which, shamefully, is most of the time!

I, like you, don’t reeeeeally need glasses/contacts, except technically for driving at night. Because of this I had been anti-contacts for years and years, just busting out my nerd-glasses when absolutely necessary (and making what FI calls the ‘mole face’ when I didn’t have them around!). I finally relented and tried a pack of the daily disposable kind for a ski vacation to Tahoe…and now I’m a contacts convert! I still don’t wear them (or my glasses) all the time, but they are fantastic for things where wearing glasses if needed would just be a nuisance (i.e. active stuff like bike rides, movies/concerts/sporting events, shopping, running errands, being able to see while still wearing my super-cool aviator sunglasses, etc.).

One caveat - as I don’t wear contacts all that frequently, they do tend to dry up on me if I wear them all day (like, more than 8 hours) - so if you go the contacts route, be prepared with rewetting solution or your trusty glasses for any late-night partying!

I wore my glasses on my wedding day - they’re actually similar to yours, coppery-colored and rectangular. I wear them every day (the Mr. wears glasses, too) and I did not want to look completely different on our wedding day.

Do what’s comfortable for you… for me, it was definitely glasses, but I haven’t worn contacts for at least 5 years.

I SWEAR I saw Mrs. Gummy Bear in the comments of that article.
I wear contacts, but if I found glasses that “went” with my personality I’d wear them. I actually want to start wearing glasses again to give my eyes a break…
I think your glasses are awesome and that if you have someone (your photographer?) looking out for the half eye thing then you should be fine. Or you could wear them for the ceremony and take them off for pictures.

My cousin and his fiance are getting married Saturday; she’s a glasses wearer, so I am curious to see what she will do.

Either way, you gals will look great:)

@sally: no way!

@Emily: good point… I have only had them for a year so I would still feel like myself without them. Giving contacts a try sooner rather than later is probably a good idea, Mr. P hates wearing contacts so they aren’t for everyone, I guess

Now that I’m grown up and finally found a pair of cool frames, they’re a part of my trademark and I don’t have the urge to ditch them any more. And the boy will never wear contacts, it weirds him out.

In 4th grade I had this friend who had just started needing glasses and didn’t have any yet, so I shared mine so she could see the board. :)

Don’t know if this is an option for you, but I had LASIK last summer and would highly HIGHLY recommend it. I had horrible vision previously (could not even read the big E on the chart) and now I see even better than 20/20. The only thing I could complain about is that my eyes are slightly more sensitive to sunlight now, so I need to wear sunglasses when driving and I didn’t previously, but that is a small price to pay for the huge improvement! If you only have a little bit of a vision problem, the price probably won’t be as expensive as it is for some people — like mine was pricier because my eyesight was so bad, but for people with minimal problems the price adjusts accordingly. Good luck on your decision! If you don’t want to go for LASIK, I would give contacts a try just to see how they work for you. If they’re comfortable and you like how you look, go for it. If they are painful for you or you don’t look like “you,” wear your glasses. :)

Hey, that’s me in the first photo, dancing with my Dad! Thanks for the post :) I’m a wedding photographer, and I actually had this argument with the guy who shot my wedding. He thinks I look better without glasses, but I stuck to my guns - I wore them the whole day, and just took a few formal portraits without them. I wanted to SEE my wedding day as clear as possible, and look like “me”! Glasses-me is the woman my husband was marrying, after all.

I’m wearing my glasses - I got contacts ages ago for the wedding, but I have issues getting them in (a good way to wreck expensive wedding makeup), and don’t look like “me” without glasses (I’ve been wearing them for 17 years).

I was a contacts wearer for about 10 years until being diagnosed with rosacea last year that makes wearing lenses impossible. I wasn’t happy in glasses — I’m way near-sighted — and didn’t qualify for LASIK, so I had ICL (implantable collamer lense) surgery…basically, contact lenses permanently inserted IN my eyes. Now, I’m seeing better than 20/20 for the first time in my life, and so excited to be glasses-free again!

You look great with glasses, Miss P., but sounds like you might want to try contacts or go without.

I’m with Miss Candy Corn — I’m wearing ‘em!

I have very sensitive eyes, so I don’t consider contacts an option . . . my eyesight also is not so bad, but I get cranky without them, so my solution was like Mr. P’s — I bought a new pair of rimless glasses! I found a pair that look almost-not-there and that have a nice green on any metal parts (to match my wedding colors). They also are anti-reflective, so no glare in photos! My FI is the only one who has seen them so far. My goal was to wear glasses but look a bit less like I am wearing them.

I do think Lara looked way beautiful!

I enjoy your posts!

It honestly never occurred to me to NOT wear my glasses at my wedding. I’ve worn glasses since I was nine years old, and I would just look strange without them, never mind that I can’t see more than six inches in front of my face! I’ve had the anti-glare coating on my lenses for the past few years (originally because I spend so much time in front of a computer screen, but also to help with night driving), and it cuts the glare in photos even with a flash right in front of my face. I figure I’ll put a couple of lens cleaning alcohol wipes in my purse and clean them off if they get smudged, and I’ll be good. :)

@Miss Candy Corn - no hating from me! Spectacled brides are super-cute, especially if their photogs get a hot librarian-peeking-over-the-top-of-her-glasses shot ;) If I found my glasses more comfortable, I’d probably wear them more often and thus they’d be more integral to my ‘look’, but as it stands, both contacts and glasses are sometimes-accessories for me.

i like that in contacts you can see someone’s face clearly…and its something that isn’t dated. some styles of glasses (ie. cat-eye ;-)) can go out of style some years down the road. for me…i hope that the wedding is somewhat timeless.
i vote to sport the contacts! *although your glasses are suuuuper cute on you!*

If you are a glasses kind of gal, then by all means WEAR GLASSES! It makes me sad when people dont really “look like an improved version of themselves” on their wedding day. I’ve never once in my life wore my hair up for a special occasion, and I refused to for my wedding. Lots of people looked at me funny like What? No updo? Yeah no. No updo.

If you live your day to day life in glasses and you love it, then wear them for your big day! If youre a half glasses/half contacts girl, then I guess go without, since people are used to seeing you without.

But by all means, whether you go contacts or glasses, DO NOT GO WITHOUT CORRECTIVE EYEWEAR on your special day! You want to see everything 20/20!!!
