Birdcage Veil Woes

June 15th, 2008 @ 1:32 pm by Mrs. Gingerbread

I never thought that I’d want to wear a veil, but birdcage veils have been on my mind a lot lately. My criteria is that I don’t want to spend more than $50, I want it to be no longer than to my nose (no having to lift the veil to kiss the bride), and I want it in ivory, preferably with feathers, but flowers will do.

You may remember vintageglam, who was a Knottie Bio of the Week in April.

Etsy seller Myra Kim of Twigs & Honey would be a great option, but sadly she is not accepting custom orders at the moment. I’ve been searching etsy, ebay, and google for some alternatives, but I’m just not finding anything that fits my criteria. Do you have any suggestions? I don’t mind buying online as long as they ship to Canada. Bonus points for a brick and mortar store in Vancouver so that I can try the veil on.

Any other birdcage veil brides out there? I’d love to see what you choose!

I ordered my veil from somethingbold.com. This is the one I chose: http://somethingbold.com/Marilyn.htm. I opted to get the crystals on it, so it ended up costing right at $50.00, but if you get it without it’s only $36.95.
I plan on making my own fascinator to go with it, and removing the veil for the reception but keeping the fascinator in. You can see a picture of me wearing it on my blog!
Good Luck!

I’m making my own :) I bought two yards of 9″ (goes to your nose) netting for $10 including shipping to Nova Scotia from Judith M Millinery!! It took less than a week to arrive :)

I will buy some clips (my hair is short so I’m avoiding combs) and will sew the netting to the clips. You can get crystals, pearls, whatever at Michaels and attach them yourself if you want.

There’s a webpage that has instructions and it looked so simple I couldn’t not try to make it myself. Her pictures on The Knot are spectacular (Care04)!

All in all, I’m looking to spend less than $20 for a custom birdcage.

I second making your own. I made mine for $10!!

Mikiye Creations from Etsy.com has a birdcage veil available for $35. It has a flower rather than feathers, but she does do custom orders as well, so I’m sure you could look into it.

I second DIY. Do you have a Claires? It’s a Jewllery/Accessories store targeting the 12 to 14 year old crowd BUT they tend to carry a number of feather-y and flower-y hair clips and combs at reasonable prices (under $10).

Lisanne says:

I love http://www.birdcageveils.com. The owner is so, so nice and helpful. :) And the prices are pretty reasonable. Also, there are some beautiful fascinators (the flower part) on eBay for great prices. :)

I featured Amanda’s vintage glam wedding on my site and I’m pretty sure she bought her birdcage veil from the site Lisanne mentioned above, http://www.birdcageveils.com. Hope this helps!

I hardly ever wander by this website anymore but happened to see this post — I used the same instructions that awhaller mentioned for my veil for my wedding last year, ordering supplies from Judith M and then adding my own personal touches with fabric flowers… I probably spent less than $20 on the whole package and it worked out fabulously. I would suggest using a lighter colored netting — I had navy netting and although it worked for my personal style (and I would still choose it again), I think that the lighter colors may photograph a tad bit better. I’d advise taking plenty of test photos ahead of time to see how you want to position the veil and how it appears under different types of lighting.

Here are a couple of photos with my DIY veil in action:

I am loving the birdcage veil. I will be interested to see what you come up with!! Thanks to Lisanne for the link! Seems like a great site- although I have to wonder about the music choice… seems a little 70’s p-rnish… haha!

A friend of mine makes birdcage veils but doesn’t have a proper site up yet. She is in the Los Angeles area, but will ship anywhere, I’m sure.

Here are a couple of samples of what she’s done:

You know i’d love to have you borrow mine, only I’d love to be the first to debut it ;) I was going to suggest making your own using the sites other ppl listed above. I would have done it, but I’m too DIY challenged!

latewinterb2b says:

I add to the DIY suggestion pile: birdcage veils are pretty easy to make, even with feathers. You can mail-order supplies (great feathers can be had from millinery sources and better fabric shops). If you have short or fine hair, I suggest using toupee clips, which you can get from wig shops. They hold like nobody’s business. Good luck!

I got mine from etsy buyer Giao

From order to my house in 2 weeks. Let her know your budget (incl shipping) and she’ll work with that.

Thank you so much for posting about this and for all the links above! I have been having trouble finding one too and these resources are fantastic!

Have you tried http://www.unveiledbridaldesigns.com/ they have some beautiful ones. They are a little more than $50 but they are pretty amazing.

Rachel says:

I had a fabulous friend make mine with netting from the millinery. I purchased large feathers from a fabric store to embellish it, but in the end I found something at a craft store that was like a cross between a roach clip (!) and a hair clip that had just a little poof of feathers on it, and we clipped that onto the plain birdcage veil for the perfect touch.
Here’s a photo from there:

Thanks girls for all the links! I love birdcage veils and I want my clients to get them, but I was sad that when I did the search at the end of last year, it was basically “pay $150 or make your own.”

Miss Gingerbread - Although the following option is not yet launched at our site, I could make you a small birdcage veil mounted on a comb like the one made for Miss Flamingo recently and shown here: http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/06/06/me-too-i-want-two/#more-54898 for $29.99. I would be happy to make a small custom feather flourish to keep within your budget. You can find ideas for feather pieces at http://www.breeziway.com. I am in England until the 28th of June (and unable to fulfill orders until my return to Michigan), but except for the next four days in Vienna I will be available via email to answer any questions if you like. I am located in Michigan, so shipping would be approximately $5 anywhere in the states. (breeziway@aol.com) Let me know if I can be of any assistance. Best wishes, Sandra

@Jessica: You are not alone. I clicked on the website and Miss GB 2.0 said, “Is that porn?!”

Melanie says:

She is now! You have to convo her. I just ordered a birdcage veil. It will be just the veil with no flowers or feathers. But she can do that too. She’s backlogged 11 weeks so put your order in early.

I’m not so crafty, so I think I’ll buy mine from etsy.

try http://www.fascinators.com.

They are australian, but great prices and unique veils…

chekc it out! I bought alot of stuff from them. Great quality

I second the Somethingbold.com recommendation–I got their “Elizabeth” veil with crystals for about $35. I plan on wearing it forward during the ceremony and then turning it around for the reception so it’s not in my face all night. Super cute!!

29.
Kim says:

I bought the same veil our knottie vintageglam did. It is actually from http://www.distinctiveveils.com. They can make it with Swarovski crystals which is along the bottom edge instead of pearl or rhinestone. I love it because it’s simple/elegant but glam at the same time! It was $55.

Leanna says:

I bought my veil, a russian birdcage viel like you described for $19.99 including shipping from Ebay. I just put in search for Russian Bird Cage veil.

How do you attach a birdcage veil? I really like them and I bought one for about $30 on Ebay…..but when I got it i had no clue how to put it on without it looking very silly and messy!

If you happen to be in New York, you can go to Sportabella at (242?) West 40th street just off 8th Ave to get a material to make a Veil. about $12/yd
