Favorit-ism

June 15th, 2008 @ 10:24 am by Mrs. Tulip

Wedding favors can be a touchy issue. Brides love them, but realistically non-edibles often get tossed out after the wedding. (Whether right away or, if you’re like me, after you’ve kept them for a few months because you feel guilty throwing out a friend’s favor!)

So I was determined that any favors we gave away should be useful. I also wanted to make them, for a personal touch. After discovering dried lavender for sale at Save-on-Crafts, I decided the answer was lavender sachets. They not only leave your clothes smelling lovely, but keep away bugs to boot!

For fabric, I purchased a beautiful turquoise sari off eBay. I planned to attach a red vintage button to each and wrap around a note explaining the uses of lavender sachets. But, as the day got closer, I ran out of time and energy to actually make the sachets. Luckily, PaperMart came to the rescue — while buying bouquet-wrapping ribbon off their site, I came across these lavender-embroidered muslin bags. The new plan? Open bag, spoon in lavender, and tie. It saved SO much time!!

Each sachet cost about 80 cents but looked much nicer, thanks to the embroidered bags. And they were a huge hit with the females in attendance — a few gals admitted to taking a handful! Hopefully, our guests’ drawers will now smell pretty for many months to come….

Will you give away wedding favors?

Our foreign exchange student gave me a lavender sachet like 10 years ago and I just barely threw it out. I think your guests will hold on to these for a long time. I hope my favors are just as useful.

What a great idea! We had the same favor concerns you did, so we went for edible favors and gave out Baci chocolates in little tulle sachets. We met in Italy and we like smooches, so it seemed appropriate enough.

If I had been at your wedding, I probably would have snagged more than one of these, too! Good work.

Right now, I’m on the fence about whether to provide favors. It seems even the edible ones often go to waste. We still have two caramel apples in our fridge from last October - not because we might still eat them, but I’d feel bad just throwing them out.

I like your idea with the lavender for its practicality. The only problem I see is that the guys in attendance don’t get the same benefit as the ladies. Ideally, I’d like to find something that everyone can and will use in the future and is not very expensive. A tall order, I know, but I think your idea is just about there.

If I can’t think of any way to satisfy the above requirements, I just might break tradition and nix the favors altogether (http://www.12kwedding.com/2008/05/08/break-from-tradition/).

I’m planning on going with edible favors. I have Baci chocolate to represent my Italian roots and Freia Norwegian chocolate to represent his, not sure how I’m going to package both yet but thought this might be a nice personal touch.

I gave lavender sachets away at my wedding in February (yes, I’m still a Wedding bee addict, even though I’m already married!) and they were a big hit.

I always said that if I was going to have favors they would be edible. Our guest will have a candy buffet, ice cream bar, wedding cake and dessert that is included in the meal. So I think that is enough food and they can take the candy home as a favor. However, my FMIL thinks that we should still give something else.

We gave away a cd with some of the songs that were played at the wedding and some other favorites. We also gave a brightly decorated box with chocolate covered pretzels inside. The pretzels were a big hit:)

Lavenders are great… We have a lavender farm here on Maui, and if you need to add other lavender products, you can get them online at http://www.aliikulalavender.com/

We’re passing on favors. I don’t really understand them. I’ve never once gone to a wedding and thought “Oh! I wonder what I’ll get!?” Sometimes they are integrated into the wedding theme or ceremony (like the bookmarks above) but nothing was obvious for our wedding, so we’d just be getting something to say we did.

But I like the lavender sachets. FI is allergic to lavender, but I used to always have them in my dresser. I would have enjoyed getting one!

All those edible favors are making me hungry!!

And I forgot about mixed CDs … probably the most useful of favors, in my book. We’re actually sending out CDs with our thank you notes, to compensate for the music melt-down at our reception.
