Significantly Better

June 17th, 2008 @ 12:06 pm by Mrs. Canary

Ever since I started working out more often and paying more attention to my diet, I’ve been guzzling a lot more water. I had been buying bottled water and going through multiple bottles a day. Finally over the weekend, I splurged on a Sigg bottle and have been loving it! I’ve used it every day since.

I had noticed Sigg bottles about a year ago while living in Seattle and didn’t understand why anyone would spend money on an aluminum bottle and now I am a convert. First off, they are very nice to look at. ;) There is a design fit for everyone. Second, they’re great for the environment (who doesn’t love that?). Third, they’re lightweight– which is great if you’ve been toting a water bottle around in your purse like me. And the final reason (and the biggest selling point for me) is that they don’t alter the taste of the water. Call me crazy, but I taste plastic in my water if it’s been in a plastic bottle for too long. Since Sigg is made out of aluminum, you never have that problem. And depending what you use it for, there are a variety of lids to choose from (i.e. screw top or active).

I am now kicking myself for having finished our bridesmaids and groomsmen gifts eons ago, otherwise, these would have definitely made it into our packages. If anything, they also make fantastic junior attendant gifts with fun designs and smaller sizes.

A while ago, it was possible to truly personalize the bottle with your own design, but with increased demand, Sigg cannot offer the service anymore. But no fear, there are hundreds of neat designs to choose from and you can find them in your local Whole Foods or REI.

Here are some of my favorites:

SIGG Water Bottle with Screw Top - 20 oz., $19.95

SIGG Vintage Bottle - 0.4 Liter, $28.00
Image from here.

SIGG Kids’ Water Bottle - 10 oz., $16.95
Image from here.

SIGG Active Top Water Bottle - 20 oz., $19.95

Any other Sigg lovers/converts out there?

I still need to get one since I’ve converted from my BPA-polluted Nalgene. Guess I shouldn’t play around with stuff that will kill me :)

And I love the one with the bird on it - pretty!

I considered going this route, especially after the plastic my Nalgene was made from was recalled — and the company ceased production! But, I’m a Nalgene girl at heart, so I purchased the bottles deemed “safe” (frosty-looking plastic rather than clear). I hear you, though, Miss Canary, with a great water bottle close at hand, I go through a ton of H2O during the day!

I should say, that Nalgene stopped making the bottles using the unsafe plastic. Seriously, it was bizarre when I went to get my new (safe) bottle, and saw employees at REI throwing all the pretty-colored clear plastic Nalgenes into the trash!

I love my sigg bottle! One of these days I’m going to pony up the cash and get a 1L bottle which will be better for my workouts. :-)

This is good-I’ve heard that plastic (polycarbonate) bottles are bad for you. I recently switched over to an aluminum bottle I found at Bed Bath and Beyond (burning up some wedding gift cards!) for like $10.

I love my Sigg, too, but I’ve recently read some stuff about Siggs not being necessarily safe, either (read the comments): http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/04/are-sigg-aluminum-bottles-bpa-free.php

One brand that’s supposed to be really good/safe is Klean Kanteen (kleankanteen.com).

I’m a Sigg lovah! I do recommend getting one of the bottle cleaning kits with the flexible brush — it can get pretty nasty in there after a while, as I discovered, and a quick scrub with the brush really does the trick.

But does Sigg give off a metallic taste? IMO, that’s even worse than the plasticky taste. If not, I will buy one right; I need a pretty water bottle!

GorgesViola, thanks for that link.

@Amanda: Nope! There is not metal taste at all. The water tastes as it should!

@GorgesViola: Yes, thank you for the link!

Sigg bottles are actually lined with a type of flexible, non-leaching plastic.. this means no metal taste, and since none of the plastic “leaches” into the water, it’s safe and there’s no plastic taste. The only drawback I’ve had with mine so far is that it can dent if dropped and full of water. But now with the dent mine looks even cooler and rugged!

Me me me! I can forget mine at work and come back the next day to drink out of it with no difference in taste. It works so well in that regard that I probably don’t wash it often enough because I forget (sick I know!)

My only complaint is that I bought the sport/squirt top model and it fell off a small ledge one day and the plastic cracked right off. It’s kind of gross to think how unsanitary it is to use it without the protective top, but I still do it anyways.

I love my SIGG bottle… I’ve had mine for a couple years maybe? I dunno, but it the best invention yet. I keep mine at work and just refil it throughout the day. Great idea for a gift! I was just gonna give my girls a water bottle, but this is sooo much better!

I have a Klean Kanteen and I love it! It’s not lined with plastic, but still doesn’t give off any metallic taste that I’ve noticed, and I’m pretty picky about water. However, because both the lid and bottle are metal, it’s kind of noisy when you open or close it. Other than that, it’s great.

I’ve had my Sigg for a little over a year now and I love it! Today I forgot it at work…sad. FI just got one too, so I guess we’ll both be safe from BPA and stylin for a while! lol.

good for you. the water really does taste better.

i use kleen kanteen, which has been a great choice for me since i am so rough with my things. i’ve already dented it, but because its stainless steel it doesn’t matter. if it were a sigg i’m sure the ceramic coating would have cracked!

I was thisclose to puttings Siggs in my BM gift bags.

If you Google Sigg and BPA though you will see that it is sadly not clear whether it is BPA free or not. (however it is likely better than the old Nalgene’s) There 100% is a plastic lining inside of Siggs - and at least the lining component is made in China.

Several entities have requested a list of the lining’s component from the Chinese manufacturing plant, but the Chinese manufacturer considers the formula “proprietary” and has been unwilling to share its components with Sigg itself or the other entities.

Unfortunately, given China’s track record with consumer products I don’t trust that the formula is BPA free. Something seems a bit off to me.

The good news is that Sigg is currently looking into other plastic lining providers who will be more forthcoming with their information, so hopefully this issue will be resolved soon.

Such a bummer, I LOVE the Siggs and want one so bad!!

You definitely aren’t crazy! There are ongoing studies concerning a possible danger in water bottles. Bottled water is transported in unrefrigerated trucks for long distances. The bottles heat up, and a dangerous chemical, Bisphenol A can leak out. Regardless of this chemical, the water definitely does pick up some of the oily chemicals leaking from it’s plastic. ^_^
I just carry around nalgene bottles filled with filtered tap from home. ^_^ Less waste, better tasting water, less MONEY, and it’s got me drinking more than ever. ^_^

I have the one with the bird on it and I love it. =) But I have to ask, am I the only one who thinks it has a weird taste after being in the bottle a while? I don’t know if it’s a metallic taste, or maybe I’m just so used to plastic tasting water. Now that’s a scary thought.

Do the sigg bottles get condensation on them? I love my Tervis because I can fill it with ice water and there’s no condensation, but it’s polycarbonate :(

@CharlestonBride: Yes, unfortunately, I’d agree that is one of the cons of the Sigg bottle. It definitely gets condensation, especially when you first refill it with cold water. But after a quick wipe, it’s remains pretty dry.
