Why’s Deodorant So Hard To Find?

June 17th, 2008 @ 5:13 pm by Mrs. Milkshake

Much love to one of sweetest people I know, the girl in the photo above. She made a special trip to come visit us since she’s spent the last couple years in Ottawa and won’t be able to make it to our wedding, and made my day by gladly accepting my offer to do her wedding photography when her big day came. So she gets a pretty photo on Weddingbee because I like posting lots of photos and it’s really hard to snap a picture of myself with a 7 pound camera.

Somehow we started talking about how impossible it is to find plain, women’s deodorant that doesn’t contain antiperspirant. My kindred spirit! There are so many men’s deodorants on the market, but it’s definitely slim pickings for us women. Uncomfortable with the idea of preventing my pores from sweating in an area with so many lymph nodes, combined with the thought of my family history of breast cancer, I’ve spent many, many years trying to find women’s deodorant. Besides, deodorant never leaves a white powdery mess on dark clothing.

When I was young I used a Lady’s Speed Stick Teen deodorant gel….it was green. I remember seeing it on pharmacy shelves up until at least a few years ago, but now that I google it, I see it comes in 5 new flavors (strawberry!) but it is now also antiperspirant.

I’ve also tried the J/Â/S/Ö/N products, and Tom’s of Maine, and while they are “natural” and don’t contain the dreaded aluminum chlorohydrate, perhaps they’re a bit too natural for me as I found that they didn’t work entirely well at cutting smell.

When I was a teenager, my mom brought me back an unmarked bag of jagged “alum crystals” from the Philippines, which she made me grind to a powder with a mortar and pestle. It worked the very best at cutting smell but the mortar and pestle bit was a bit tedious and I resorted to using a sporty men’s deodorant for many years since I wasn’t satisfied with Tom’s or the J/Â/S/Ö/N products. When I thought about it - I wondered just how different “alum” was from aluminum chlorohydrate, too. It did, however, allow me to sweat, so it couldn’t have been that bad.

crystal

So then a couple years ago, I found an alum crystal product on the market. And it is the best thingI’ve ever found. You just wet it (which I very well could have done with my bag of alum crystals had they not been so jagged), and apply. No smell, and it lets you sweat. Another problem with a lot of the women’s deoderants I’d tried is that they’re gel-y and therefore sticky, perhaps promoting sweat and odor causing bacteria. Not so with the crystal. The crystal is my best friend, and it even comes in a travel size! It is so worth the $6 or so at your local pharmacy.

I’m reeling a little at the thought of my non-strapless wedding gown in the august heat, and I may indulge myself with a watermelon antiperspirant for just a day. Because with what few lady’s deodorants are available on the market, I was always jealous of the 100+ different scents that you could get for antiperspirants.

Anyone else out there have an aversion to antiperspirant, too?

Yeah, I’ve had to switch a few times on my search. Finally, I found Tom’s but after a few months my body adapted. My friend and parents use the crystal stick (or rock as I call it) and love it. I’m still on Jason lavendar which is working well for me. I remember being super stressed about it for my wedding. I didn’t want to stink, but I didn’t want to use products I had given up.

ya my fiance uses the crystal stick. We’ve had a hard time finding it.

I use an Adidas deoderant that uses cotton rather than aluminum. I’m anti-aluminum as well and this is the only brand I’ve found that works really well for me. Tom’s never worked well and I don’t like the smell of any of the Jason products.

very interest post…I’m going to have to try some of these alternatives. I stopped using Secret a few years ago and just use baby powder now, which does the job for me - no smell and no sweat.

I converted to the Crystal stick just recently but instead use the spray. I even spray it in my shoes to prevent foot odor. I love it because it is all-natural — one less thing that has chemicals and is being absorbed into the body.

Good to know! I also recently had a paraben and aluminum scare. I quickly threw out my antiperspirants and opted for Tom’s… and it’s given me a really painful rash! I’ll definitely try out the Crystal…maybe the Adidas one, too.

Sharmeen says:

I feel your pain … except that I have a skin condition that pretty much leaves me allergic to most deodorants/antiperspirants.

I love using Burt’s Bees Herbal Deodorant. It’s an acquired smell I guess … but at least it doesn’t cause me to break into a rash every time I use it.

Based on Miss Canary’s post recently (http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/06/04/keeping-it-cool/), I just bought and tried Origins’ No Offense deodorant. It’s free of the bad stuff–parabens, phthalates, aluminum, etc etc. It smells great and keeps the odor away, at least for me. I recommend it.

Kate says:

I think the Adidas one has been discontinued, I can only find it at my local Big Lots, or online. I’m quite disappointed.

Erin says:

I don’t wear deodorant on most days. If my body needs to sweat, I let it. (And I’m not stinky - most people, including boyfriend and office mates didn’t know until I told them). If I think I will be sweating an abnormal amount when I don’t want to, I use a little talc powder or FI’s Tom’s of Maine deodorant.

I really liked the Kiss My Face roll-on - it works really well, and also comes in regular and travel size. It doesn’t have the same stickyness and overly sweet smell of the Tom’s of Maine (which my mother used to make me move), although I have since gone back to just using Secret.
If you are going to use an anti-perspirant for your wedding, make sure you use it for about a week in advance - it sounds gross, but you need to clog up all your pores before it starts to work properly. (Yeah. It’s totally natural. :-p)

*used to make me use. I don’t know what’s wrong with my typing.

jilian says:

I’ve found the crystal at Walgreen’s and CVS - so it’s not too hard to find :) Though they usually only sell one type - the hubby has to deal with the purple packaging ;) Oh well!! It lasts forever too! (I haven’t seen the spray in the drug stores)

Lozza says:

Have you ever tried LUSH products? I’m pretty sure they’re all non-anti-perspirant….

Laurie says:

I use deodorant/antiperspirant everyday. The connection between antiperspirant and breast cancer has not been made at all.

If you have an allergy I could understand why you might want to use deodorant only - but no matter how ‘okay’ you might smell to co-workers I still wouldn’t want to walk around with wet pits.

PS: I suspect in some cases a co-worker might be cautious of telling someone to their face that they smell bad.

I’m not a big sweat-er, but have always had a big problem with odor. And lately, for some reason, nothing seems to work. (I feel bad for Mr T, having his girl around at last only to find out she’s unbearably stinky!!)

But earlier today I read about a bad-stuff-free cream called Lavilin* that uses essential oils to kill the bacteria that cause odor. You don’t even need to use it every day. Normally I might be skeptical, but the review I read was absolutely glowing, so I decided to give it a try. Will let you know how it goes!!

* Got mine from http://www.microbalanced.com but I now see there are cheaper sites out there. Try a Google shopping search if you’re interested.

I’m using Addidas too. I like the fitness one better than the cotton sent. You have to look carefully on the front label and see no aluminium in it though.

I do have a crystal rock at home that my aunt gave me for my airplane trip (back then you couldn’t even take 3oz of liquids). I haven’t tried it enough however to see how well it works with me. But Addidas I like. Although I’m not sure if they are discontinuing it or not because I find it in less and less places.
Tom of Maine and Jason are simply not working well enough for me.

Hi there!
Have you looked on http://www.etsy.com ? There’s a few sellers that sell all natural deodorants or ones without harsh chemicals on there. I love Spa Therapy’s Pink Cupcake
http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5153886
also there is Cozy Moments.
http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5250593

I live in Florida and walk everywhere- and no issues with either of these deo’s. I tend to prefer Spa Therapy’s- but both nice products.

Interesting post. My dress is trimmed in black and it never occurred to me that I ought to thinking about this for the big day. So thank you for bringing it to my attention before I risk getting white marks on my beautiful dress!

On a side note, does anyone who tans notice a difference once you get out of the tanning bed? I can put gobs of antiperspirant on and when I get out I am sweaty (for obvious reasons) and stinky! Ew! And if I don’t put on anything right before jumping in - look out! I have only noticed this phenomenon in the last couple years. Gross! :-)

My mother never allowed me to use antiperspirants growing up and I’m grateful to her to this day! I use a deordorant by Melaleuca. It’s not a brand sold in stores, only through their website but it’s fantastic. A very very light scent (or you can get no scent if you have an aversion to scent) and it works wonderfully!

czphilly says:

Timely post! I was just in rite-aid to switch to deodorant only and to my complete surprise, the only one to choose was Tom’s of Maine! How come guys get non-anti-perspirant deodorant?! I’m trying it for different reasons though, I find all my t-shirts get a horrible stain after only a few wears when I use anti-perspirant. I’m tired of buying cheap t-shirts that only last one summer because I can’t stand the stains next summer! Well, I’m trying Tom’s but can’t say I’m too impressed, may have to find a crystal…

22.
GetMarried4Less says:

i use the Crystal too! its da bomb! though i am guilty of layering it with anti-perspirant in the summer bc if i dont i’m embarrassingly wet.

but i love how there is no odor whatsoever with the Crystal. i’ve been using the same one for ever.

Ali says:

I tried Alba which makes a lot of PABA-free skincare products for women. Let’s just say it made me smell worse than I did prior to putting it on. I tried it for a month, thinking my body just had to get used to it, but my fiance even admitted to having second thoughts about marrying me after getting a good whiff of my armpit once! He was joking of course, but you get the point…Careful with that all-natural stuff!

24.
J. says:

I have extra sweat glands in my armpits and am much too clean of a person to simply let myself sweat and only worry about the smell. I still use an antiperspirant. Honestly, if I worried about every little thing that I am now told is dangerous for me, I would hide under the bed and never come out.

25.
Natasha says:

I use the Adidas deodorant as well, but because I was tired of getting white crud on my clothing and yellow stains on the armpits of white shirts.

http://www.styledash.com/2007/01/17/drugstore-beauty-queen-adidas-deodorant/

I’ve only been able to find it at Wal-Mart, though.

I’ve never tried this, but I’ve heard that it’s pretty good…

Miss X says:

I was just “venting” to my H2B the other day about how easy it is to find him an antiperspirant free deoderant, and how frustrating it is to find one for me. After many years of using an antiperspirant, I began to sweat MORE and developed a terrible underarm itch when I used it (crazy, huh?). I’ve used Tom’s for about 2 years now, b/c it was the only option I could find. I have never been thrilled with the results, so I think I may try some of these suggestions!

mweston2 says:

Have you tried any of the LUSH solid deodarants?
I’ve used Teo and Armoarant, and I found both worked really well. The Teo smell was more enjoyable, but it seemed “rough” on my skin when applying it. The Aromarant smell took a bit to get used to.

I am not sure if anyone has heard of this website, http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com, but I find it very helpful. It allows you to search for a product by name, ingredient or company. It will tell you what the product is linked to, user reviews and comments-the list goes on. Most importantly it gives you a score, 0 out of 10, with 10 being a high hazard product. Go to skincare and click on deodorant. What are you waiting for, give it a try!

Jamks says:

Actually, Laurie, I hate to burst your bubble, but more and more studies are emerging about the dangers of antiperspirant and all sorts of cancers. In fact, in some biopsies of tumors, they are finding lumps of parabens and that aluminum stuff in them. Both have altering effects on your thyroid and therefore, your hormones. Best to steer clear.

Sigh. Says the girl who had to go back to antiperspirant until her rash goes away and she can buy this Adidas stuff.

meghan says:

the crystal comes in spray too and you don’t have to worry about jagged edges.
