About Mrs. Pomegranate

Mr. Pomegranate was not to be thwarted again when putting together his second proposal plan - he didn’t tell a soul! Two days after the ring arrived at the jewelry store, sized perfectly to my finger, he started to “prep me.” We were going to attend the California State Fair later that week with a group of our friends, an annual tradition of food, fun and festivities. To switch it up, Mr. Pom arranged for us to go on a different day - which set us up for a romantic summer night alone to enjoy the State Fair all by our lonesome.

Of course, there has to be a little deviation from the perfection - which adds humor to the tale. On the way in, Mr. Pom set off the metal detector. I hadn’t noticed as I was peeking in at all the lights and glitz. While I was distracted, Mr. Pom whispered to the security guy, “It’s an engagement ring!” The security guard discreetly apologized and quickly passed him through. Whew!

We wandered around; stopping to take a look at the Toytopia exhibit - very cool - where there was a Zoltar machine (ie. the movie Big). Mr. Pom gave me a $1 for a prediction. The winded speech from Zoltar made little sense, but the tear-off card that ensued spoke of a future love. I must admit, I started to suspect something - but honestly, who could rig a Zoltar machine to do something like that?

We happily sped off to enjoy a few random rides before landing at the ferris wheel. We hopped on our gondola and sped upwards. At this point, I almost completely ruined his plan. I have a pretty ridiculous fear of falling (not heights, falling). I was freaked out about the speed and the drop and was convinced I’d have a panic attack. I’m sure Mr. Pom was thinking, “Crap - I can’t do this unless she calms down!” However, after the first speedy drop I was fine and Mr. Pom wandered into a wonderful, “I want to spend the rest of my life with you speech” and plopped a gigantic diamond onto my finger. He sheepishly apologized for not getting down on one knee as he, “might fall off and die.” That’s about the time my heart skipped a beat - and not because of a fast ferris wheel drop. Fireworks had exploded overhead - Mr. Pom had timed it all perfectly.

Our very first engagement photos are of the photo booth variety. We also purchased our entrance photo, which amazingly, turned out fantastic. I couldn’t have asked for better photography to capture the moment - it’s added a nice touch of kitschy-cool to the memory.

A fuzzy camera phone photo of my engagement ring taken from my office the day after.

What I love the most about Mr. Pom’s second proposal is the thoughtful timing, planning and foresight for the future. Always sentimental, Mr. Pom knew that we would be able to re-visit our special spot at the top of the ferris wheel every year and re-live the romance! I’m really looking forward to our date (and a wedding planning break) at the State Fair this year.

Awww. Great story! My husband had the surprise e-ring in his carry-on bag as we checked thru security at the airport. The security people all turned and stared at me. I must admit, it added to my suspicion!

That’s so sweet! I have to tell you - we were at the State Fair last year (8/28…just wondering if it’s possible that’s what day you were there? :) ) and at the time (I didn’t have a clue) my fiance’ had had the ring for nearly 2 weeks. We were on the ferris wheel and talking about how we wanted to get married someday, etc. My fiance’ even made a comment about how romantic a ferris wheel proposal would be but how he’d be afraid of dropping the ring with shaky hands and a very excited me aboard the ride. Well, he proposed 3 days later to a very very surprised me! Reading your story, I thought…if I would have seen you guys getting engaged at the fair, I would have been so jealous (and unknowing that my proposal was 3 days away) as it certainly seemed at the time like everyone was getting engaged and I wasn’t! :)

That is a fabulous story…

Excuse my dense question…but was that Zoltar message a coincidence? or does Mr. Pom have so spectacular connections?

This incorporated the one thing I have been trying to drive into That Groom’s head. I am not looking for someting elaborate (i.e. flying me to Paris and proposing on top of the eiffel tower), just something that shows he thought things through.

@l3r0wnEyedGurL & Rachel: Mr. Pom says that he worked some crazy mind magic on the machine with his “please be romantic, please be romantic,” mantra. But honestly, it was purely coincidence!

That’s a really sweet story. I was so mad at that proposal ruiner “friend” yesterday, but I think this one turned out more unique and personal. :)
