Luggage Tag Update

June 20th, 2008 @ 5:03 pm by Mrs. Gingerbread

Remember back in April when I was contemplating luggage tags as favours? Well, we decided to buy a laminator and make them ourselves. Our first idea was to use an image of a map of Vancouver. Then someone mentioned the save-the-date postcard image that our photographer, Aki, took. So now I’m torn. You know what that means! Time for a poll.

Which do you prefer?

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

The other side of the tag will have the guest’s name printed on it and these will double as place cards.

We bought the laminator for $39 and got 100 luggage tag pouches for $13.75 off of Ebay. Colour printing on cardstock should run just under $50 at Staples. I bought 30 yards of ribbon for $1.50 at Michaels. Each tag will cost about $2 and will leave us with a bunch of extra luggage tag pouches. We could offset the costs further if we turn around and resell the laminator.

Now, any suggestions on ribbon tying? Has anyone else decided to make their own luggage tags?

Those are going to be great! And cost-efficient too.
I voted for B b/c I liked that it was less cutesy and could see myself using it. I guess it also depends on how specific to Vancouver you want to be–another thing I liked about B was that it transcended the location. But both are great!

Brooke says:

Can I vote half and half? Maybe one design for the ladies and one for the men? Or something of that nature? Very cute idea, btw!

B looks a little too professional and therefore, ironically, more touristy. Just my two cents. I was SURE I was going to prefer B but changed my vote after looking at them.

Maybe to save costs, you don’t have to print on cardstock! Since it’s laminated, it may have plenty of rigidity already. I have made myself luggage tags, and I used the plastic cording to attach them. Ribbon may fray at the ends, so I’d be sure to heat-treat them.

I like A.

Julie says:

What if they were double-sided with both images? Either way, I’d almost do half-and-half, so that some people can switch if they prefer the other. Definitely cute!

As much as I LURVE your Save The Date (sorry ppl I can’t bring myself to use STD) I really like the Map makes a better luggage tage.
P.S. I think this is a GREAT idea!

Thea T says:

As someone who will be getting one of these (yay!), I vote for A. I love maps so it was a no-brainer!

I like both! I second half and half.

@Miss Cherry Pie: Come visit me in Vancouver and I’ll let you use my laminator!

@Thea T: I’m glad to get your input as the lone representative of our guest list :)

@AliCherri1: Haha. I agree about save-the-dates. You really have to be careful not to let the lingo get to you or you’ll be calling your friends and saying things like, “Did you get our STD?”

@Linda: The card stock ends up only being a couple of dollars. It’s the colour printing that is costing an arm and a leg :(

@sunflowers: I hadn’t thought of that, but you make a good point.

V says:

They both look great…is hard to choose…I like A..but I can see how B has meaning…argh…

for tying ribbon…how about doing the loop thing where you don’t have to tie at all…do you know what I mean?

Do a ribbon loop, pass it thru the whole and then pass the two ends through the loop.

;)

@V: Oh, I know what you mean. I’ll try that. (I had to read your instructions twice, before I got it :) )

E says:

I’m planning on doing luggage tag favors as well! May I ask where you bought the laminator so cheaply? I voted for #1 because I think it looks more personal than #2.

@E: We bought the GBC HeatSeal H100. There’s one on Ebay (though that’s not the vendor we bought from): http://cgi.ebay.com/GBC-HeatSeal-H100-Pouch-Laminator-1701280_W0QQitemZ230222985960QQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116
You could also check your local Craigslist.

Allison says:

Ahhh…I am still considering this favor idea. I like the first one, the second one is cute, but isn’t as personal or unique! I’m thinking of going the removable card route instead of the tags that require laminating.

17.
Lisa says:

I really like both! I vote for half and half if it’s not more expensive, although I’m leaning a tiny bit toward the second one because it is consistent with your save-the-dates, it’s pretty, and it seems to have a bit more personal meaning. On the second one, I would change the font to something with a bit more character (either more modern or more round, depending on your personality) and just print “Vancouver” on it, since you live in the Vancouver people first think of. Aggg, I can see why you needed a poll!

misspurple says:

These both rock–I’m torn. First I liked A but the more I think about it, the more I really like how B ties into your whole theme. And that’s the actual view your guests will see and remember so it’s more personal. I think I’d like it better without the text on it tough. Or maybe something more subtle but with your names and the date on it instead of Vancouver BC? That would be really nice. Your guests will adore this.

P.S. Can I borrow your laminator?

Miss Gingerbread says:

@misspurple: Heck yeah, you can borrow it. Maybe we can get together next weekend or something. I would love it if you would be willing to help me figure out programs. I am at a loss! Help!

AmberLee says:

I’m super torn too. I love the idea of the map because it just so cute. But the STD pic is very warm and memorable. Do you want an awe, sniff, sniff memory for your guest? Or do you want and awe, giggle giggle memory? Both will make everyone think of the two of you every time they travel.

21.
Sarah Tollefson says:

I also love both. I’m leaning toward the map - that’s the one I would want. Too bad you can’t have it two sided and just write the name over one in a thick black pen. Very very cool idea.

22.
srh says:

I know that you don’t know me from a can of paint, but I would totally vote for half and half!

23.
Go Amie says:

I like B slightly better, but I would like it even more if it didn’t say “Vancouver, BC” Just the image is perfect, I think!

very cute miss ginger!

I just want to say that if you need help breaking your laminator I am here for you! We have a huge professional laminator at work and I fight with it and break it far too often…. oops

25.
Sara says:

Great idea! I am opposed to the ribbon, though. It will not last for actually using on luggage. So then your guests will either not use it or have to find something else to use to attach to their luggage. The ribbon is pretty, but you need something more substantial.

26.
chibride says:

Is it crazy to do both? They’re both pretty great. I like the whimsy of the first one and love the picture on the 2nd.

27.
Erin says:

You can’t go wrong with either.

28.
Jen says:

I voted A but I agree with Go Amie, B would be better if it didn’t say anything. I think that is what makes it look too much like a postcard to me.
We are doing luggage tag favors too but I bought some on etsy. I never considered making my own and laminating which is a shame since I have a laminator at work and would have only had to order the supplies.

miss m says:

BOTH! Nothing wrong with mixing it up. :)

I like the map since it is a luggage tag. Off the subject…who was your laminator made by and was it good? Was thinking to do some of my own bag tags and am pondering between a fellowes and a scotch. Good Luck.
