That’s What It’s All About!

June 20th, 2008 @ 2:16 pm by Miss Candy Corn

I just realized I’ve never posted about our fabulous dj!   At first, we were planning on DIY-ing our wedding music with an Ipod, but I knew I would end up freaking out about the music on the wedding day if we did it ourselves.  I have this image in my head of me hauling a boombox around for backup. I was also scared there’d be a lot of this going on:

I discovered an awesome company based in Philadelphia called No Macarena. It was formed in 1997 after Kim Alexander Walsh, a WXPN dj & program director, decided to assemble an insanely large music library for music snobs such as ourselves. They have wonderful reviews and their prices are very affordable. For $850 we’ll have a dj for the entire evening. We can customize the playlist or leave the musical freedom up to the dj, which I’ve heard is recommended because they tend to have fabulous taste. I can’t wait to NOT do the macarena at the wedding! Mr. CC and I aren’t big on dancing, but we want our guests to be able to have a fun night without having to suffer through the chicken dance or hokey pokey. Although, I’m totally requesting that they play Apache by the Sugarhill Gang so I can do the dance Carlton and Will did on Fresh Prince. Yep, I’m a goober.

Is anyone else going for a more “indie” dj that won’t be playing the usual classics?

No Macarena has to be the most fabulous name I’ve ever heard for a DJ company.

I would also like to add conga lines to the list of unpleasant wedding dances.

…I know, I’m SUCH a party-pooper.

Glad you found a great DJ! Whew! Big item checked off the list!

I love Apache– I’ve totally done that dance (and embarrassed Mr. J) on more than one occasion.

I also love WXPN!! My sister lived in Philly for a while and I was so jealous! It’s hard to find a quality radio station like that. I’m also trying to find a indie DJ. My FH wants to hire a friend of his brother who DJs on the side in NYC, but I’m a little nervous about all the logistics since we’d have to rent most of the equipment and pay for his travel and everything….

Wow, No Macarena is a brilliant name. We ended up doing our music ourselves, but I totally would have gone for an indie DJ!

We’re swing dancers, so we’re hiring a friend who is also a swing dance DJ to do our wedding reception music. We’ll have some traditional wedding rock songs for the reception sprinkled in, but a lot of the music will be Frank Sinatra and other old standards, which is very much our taste. His price is also half of what others in the area are charging.

I used Kim with No Macarena for my October (2006) wedding. She was great–exactly what we wanted. Very low key, kept the “chitchat” to a minimum and really sensed the mood of the event, playing music to match. We got quiet a few compliments on the music–alot of people were really happy to finally be at a wedding where they could actually hear and talk to the other guests without yelling over the music. But she also managed to get people on the dance floor. Good decision!

WXPN is about the only thing I miss from living in New Jersey. Sounds like a great DJ company, congrats!

Candy Corn, we’re gonna have to have an Apache dance-off at the Philly get-together :-)

Not about the DJ, but when I saw you were planning on the dance from Fresh Prince, I had to comment! My husband had joked that he was going to do that at our reception, and I didn’t take him seriously. I think it was right after the garter toss that he and the groomsmen and ushers got up and the DJ put on Apache. I just about died! It was one of the best parts of the night :)

We are totally using No Macarena too! I’m excited!
