Ukelele Dreams

June 20th, 2008 @ 10:24 am by Mrs. Gingerbread

When we were sitting at LAX waiting for our flight last month, this older man started playing the ukelele. He played for a good 45 minutes and received round after round of applause from other travelers. Until that moment I never realized that I have a profound love for this instrument. If he’d been playing at YVR (that’s Vancouver International airport), then I might just have begged him to play at our reception. Oh and by the way, there aren’t a lot of hits when you search for ukelele musicians on Craigslist in Vancouver. I’ll just have to settle for the prerecorded stuff.

I adore this version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. I think it would be rather hard to do our first dance to it, but wouldn’t it be cute for cake cutting?

What song will you play while you cut your wedding cake?

I love that version, it would be perfect! I love listening to Iz- makes me feel like I’m still in Hawaii :-)

That is the song we’re using for our first dance! We’ve been practicing and it does take some getting used to, but since it’s the closest thing we have to “our” song, it was a natural choice.

This was going to be our first dance! But we found it way too hard to dance to (my FH has two left feet) so I want to use it in some other way…cake cutting might be perfect :D Thanks!

Oh my God, I’m supposed to choose a CAKE CUTTING SONG??? Is there no limit to the number of things for me to stress out about?

@Emerson: Nah, you don’t have to. The DJ, band, or Ipod can always just play whatever music is on hand. I just wanted a way to fit this sweet little song in somehow :)

@MsAnge: I am really impressed that you’ll be doing your first dance to this song!

Haha Emerson. My thoughts exactly. I had thought we would do toasts and cake cutting in the same little block of time and give the band a break. So I guess we will be having - silence (or maybe recorded something or other).

I haven’t thought of a cake cutting song yet, but I think we are going to play this song when I walk down the aisle with my dad. :)

For those looking for cake cutting songs… we aren’t having cake (dessert from our venue instead), but when we met with our deejay he said that a great cake-cutting song that’s always a huge hit is “I wanna grow old with you” from The Wedding Singer!

I’m walking down the aisle to this song! I’m having a beach wedding, so it’s perfect.

I love Iz! That’s our recessional song. :) We were engaged in Hawai’i so it had special meaning to us.

I totally forgot how much I LOVE this song!

My secret love is the accordian. It so doesn’t get the appreciation it deserves.

This song makes me feel immediately relaxed & ease. I want to make it a part of our wedding musicscape.

This is our first dance song! I love it but it’s definitely not easy to dance too, we may forego what we learned in dance lessons and just do the sophomore sway. I like the idea of the Wedding Singer song for the cake cutting, thanks!

I had friends who walked down the aisle to that song. It’s beautiful.

Bees, I just played this IZ song on the beach in Cape May NJ for a wedding processional. Love the song, so happy!

To substitute for a ukelele, Grace Note used acoustic guitar, but capo’ed it up so the strings had a much higher sound. A violin took the lead melody line. Great comments on the music from the bride, family & guests.

Good musicians are creative! ;-)
