Birds Birds Birds!

Expanding on my obsession with all things cute and bird-related and for those of you finding it hard to procure birds for decoration or cake toppers, I discovered a great tutorial this morning on one of my favorite blogs, Peonies and Polaroids (another one for the reader!). These birds are absolutely darling and if I had some more time, I would make a few for gifts.

The instructions are very detailed and even includes a template! The bride did this all by trial and error and I think she’s wonderful for sharing the final result with all her readers.

Have any of you made your own birds or cake toppers?

Last night, I was totally embolden by Mrs. Eggie’s Cuttlebug posts, and will be looking into getting by own ‘Bug for pre-wedding party invites and thank yous. Now, Miss Canary, you have me gettin’ all “I can craft birdie cake toppers!” Hmm….

I started reading the ‘Bee because I love good writing, and am enjoying wedding planning — and never thought I’d succumb to the crazy crafty ways of y’all.

Anyone else surprised at having been bitten by the crafting bug?

Thank you so much for sharing this page w/ us, I’ve been wanting to take a stab at making my own birds but I was a little overwelmed with the process, thank you thank you!

@MagPie518: I feel so lame, who is Mrs. Eggie Cuttlebug?

MagPie518 says:

@AliCherri1: Hehe, no worries. Mrs. Eggplant rocked out the Cuttlebug to make thank you notes, cards, etc.

I love that bird cake topper patterns are starting to crop up here and there! That Peonies and Polaroids blog post is so cute and funny! These two phrases ring true for me - “I nearly lost my mind trying to hold the pieces together and sew them at the same time” and “An outfit of some sort or another which will be very handy in covering your mistakes. And the blood stains from where you prick your finger and don’t notice until after you have smeared blood all over…” Crafting birds is frustrating, puzzling, and ultimately really really satisfying when you get it right - I would highly recommend this to anyone with the time and energy! It definitely made me appreciate all the hard work and talent of artists like Lauren Alane, Ann Wood, and many many others!

PS - here’s a site Miss Lemon turned me onto, which has a free download for an adorable bird pattern - no wire legs required! http://www.spoolsewing.com/blog/2008/05/16/bird-mobile/

this is such perfect timing! i was planning to start making a few birds of my own this week through trial and error, but this is way better. although i can’t believe i’m adding another diy project to my pile with only 3 weeks to go!

Miss Canary you’re so sweet! Thank you for spreading the word about birdie crafting!

@Jenny Louwheeze: thank you for sharing the link to those other little birds, I think I might try some of those next, they’re so sweet!

And you are so right, it’s the time, effort and frustration that makes them worth the price that they sell for. They may for £15 in materials but they cost hours and hours in labour.

I didn’t make my caketopper but I found a seller on Etsy (Woolpets) who was able to create theneedle felted owls that I had dreamed of. They are exactly what I wanted and I can’t wait to see them.

I love your bird. I didn’t make my own cake topper, but admire you for thinking about making yours.

BUT I did want to share my cake topper because we just got it and I am so happy!
