A Long Walk Down a Short Aisle

June 25th, 2008 @ 3:44 pm by Mrs. Shortcake

What a difference a visit makes!

Seeing the pictures of St. George’s Parish online gave such a different impression than seeing it in person…

Mr. Shortcake and I are completely in love with our tiny, pre-(BC)-historic church. Or should I say chapel? The church is TINY!

(The Family Shortcake, circa, the Jurassic Era. Do you see the lanky Miss Shortcake on the very right? Awkward! Awkward! Aughh, the pubertal angst!!)

Just joking. But that Drumheller church does bear striking resemblance to our real one:

So cute, right? I pretty much heard the Dixie Cups singing "go-ing to the chap-pel" as soon as we got out of the car, it was that adorable.

Some side views/gratuitous preciousness:

It’s so…churchy. And our priest (Anglican), didn’t laugh at me when I listed that, either, as one of the reasons we chose St. George. :D

It has a pretty memorial garden on one side as well that we can use for group photos after the receiving line:

Now, the inside, as befitting a 250 year old church, is VERY retro; lots of dark wood, gorgeous stained glass windows, more dark wood….

Seeing it in person knocked any ideas of pew decorations out of my head - it’s just too small - I’ll barely fit down the aisle as it is, and would rather not knock over every pew adornment on my way down! :P I’ve cancelled our altar arrangements, as the church altar guild provides fresh flowers every week, and can special order arrangements at no charge for a wedding.

Seeing the church in person has also made a huge difference in our music selection. The church is too cozy, too intimate, for some majestic march. And the aisle?

Holy moly.

You’re seeing it in its entirety in the next two photographs:

That’s it. Mr. Shortcake timed me walking down it at a stately snail’s pace - and it was (wishfully rounding up) thirty seconds long.

So, I have thrown away my beautiful classical pieces, and am now looking at meaningful songs that can put across their message and their melody in about 60 seconds.

Why 60 seconds? My floral designer made an excellent suggestions for short-aisled brides:

When the doors open, stop and pause and take in the scene. This gives your attendant time to arrange your train, veil, etc (if necessary), and gives you some precious moments to drink in all the loving faces around you.

I love this suggestion, as I’ve heard too many friends say that they don’t remember their ceremony at all, as it just went by in a huge, mushy, blur. And how dramatic would that be? Opening the doors, and just standing there in my dress, smiling at Mr. Shortcake until it hurts?

So here are the songs, I’ve narrowed them down to three retro-riffic choices:

1) Percy Faith & His Orchestra: ’Theme from a Summer Place"

lyrics here

2) The Beatles: "Here, There, and Everywhere" (note: would have an acoustic guitar player instead)

lyrics here

3) Cat Powers: "Sea of Love"

lyrics here

Which would you choose?

The first song sounds so perfect for your 1950s inspired wedding. Love it! Also, that mixed tape is too cute!

Beatles Beatles Beatles! Does that count as three votes? :) Perhaps I’m biased because my maids walked in to “Across the Universe” and I walked in to “Something”, both played on harp. Your church is just too darn cute! And much more warm, welcoming and personal than a big cathedral, imo.

Wow, those are three great choices; I don’t think you can go wrong!

I think I like the first one best - it seemed to fit the church better. (Is that weird to say?) I really like the third one, but I think it would be awkward to cut.

Have you thought about having all your wedding party enter with one song? Then you don’t have to cut down anything.

Im actually using the Beatles “Here, There and Everywhere” as my aisle song. Its so beautiful in accoustic guitar. Side note: Phoebe from Friends used this song, but had a steel drum play it. How awesome would that be for a beach wedding??

I think the first one best suits the rest of your theme.

the first song is so perfect for that truly vintage feel!

and the chapel is so sweet–I think it’ll be nice to have all of your guests filling it up!

1) all three of those songs are great. Sorry I’m no help. :-)

2) sweet deal on the altar arrangements!

3) When it’s filled with friends and family, the church will feel larger… and you can take that time to beam at each and every one of them as you sllllowly walk down the aisle.

eeehmm…the first one reminds me of Enzyte commercials (it’s a, um, male enhancer).

so my vote is either the beatles or cat power.

I agree the first one is perfect for the vintage feel, I think sweet is the perfect word for it. I kind of picture it from the alter standpoint and the light getting really bright when they open the door for your reveal.

Wow that is a tuffie… I wanted to say Summer Place, but I think it sounds to movie sound track, so vote is for the Beatles - I think it will be perfection in the acoustical guitar version.

I walked to Here, there and everywhere and it was a tear jerker so be prepared that you need to pick a song that won’t make everyone cry- unless you want everyone to cry and then def. pick the beatles!

I just realized you’re having a 50’s theme, you should stick with a 50’s song but I agree with others that summer place has too many other things associated with it. maybe try “Strangers on the Shore” this is a beautiful instrumental and would fit with your 50’s theme. Seriously, check it out- you’re gonna love it.

Love your church- I picked mine for very similar reasons (and ours is just as small!) I didn’t know Anglican weddings allowed secular music… hrm, that makes me want to ask our priest if we can have some, but something tells me no (boo!)

I’m partial to Sea of Love. That’s what we’re using at our beach wedding! I love the church, it’s a beaut!

I love Summer Place and I think you’ll make everyone forget every other association the second you step onto that aisle in all your fabulousness. It’s beautiful!

Gorgeous petite gothic church!

Def. check with the Reverend, most churches prefer classical & Christian music, no rock. But, you can usual sneak it in in the preludes.

Remember, a church ceremony is a worship service thanking God for your bond, and to bless your marriage. Most pop music is best played at the reception party. Of course the service should be very joyful though!

I don’t think there is a reason to kick out classical - the church is perfect for it! Like you said, just cut the pomp -ish marches. Professional musicians know how to cut a song so you get the good parts. There are plenty of Airs, Hornpipes, and Largos and Preludes to go around for the mood. Hymns for celebrating God’s role in your marriage, and lots of fast, joyful music for the recessionals.

Your florist’s advice - great- drink in the moment and walk when you are ready. Practice going slow and making eye contact with your guests in the pews. Enjoy the moment.

I considered using “Here, There and Everywhere” but am going with “Across the Universe” instead (also on acoustic guitar). So I vote for the Beatles. Gorgeous. :)

Lovely idea but I would be able to manage 5 seconds tops before I just had to start walking as the pressure of everyone looking at me wondering why I wasn’t walking got too much!

this is a suggestion concerning the look down the aisle, have someone remove all those blue hymnals. you can always put them back after the ceremony(or rather out source the job) they are very distracting and i think the look of the whole church will dramatically change.

What a great suggestion to pause and take it all in. I too have a very, very short walk down the aisle and will certainly put this advice to good use!

I have a really short aisle too, I’m glad that you posted this. The church is super cute, and fits great with your vintage theme!
