About Miss Hydrangea

My Girl

June 25th, 2008 @ 1:16 pm by Miss Hydrangea

Last weekend Mr. H and I attended his cousin’s wedding at The Oasis in Austin. Talk about an amazing view!

Picture from here. We weren’t at this particular part of the Oasis (it’s huge), but the views were like this everywhere.

The wedding was intimate and beautiful and you could feel the love everywhere … it made us so excited for our wedding that we almost we can’t stand it anymore! There was one part of the wedding that I wanted to share with everyone, because it was so unique - the father daughter dance.

Picture from here. Not the actual bride w/ her dad, but I love this pic.

When it came to the father/daughter dance, they went out on the dance floor and began dancing to “My Little Girl” by Tim McGraw. This song tugs at my heart strings nearly every time that I hear it, even though I don’t really consider myself to be a “daddy’s girl.”

Halfway through the dance, her father cut off the dj and said, “This was how she wanted to dance, now we’ll do it my way.” The dj immediately broke off in “My Girl” by the Temptations and the two did a choreographed dance that was absolutely adorable. I complimented her father on it later that night and he said that they had watched the Temptations movie to get some moves for their dance, it was adorable.

It was refreshing to see something so unique and different … and most of all fun with the dances. I have always heard of the couple doing this, but haven’t seen the father/daughter dance done like this before. It was great!

Are any of you doing unique dances at your wedding?

My fiance and i are taking dance lessons for our first dance (and for learning to dance in general) and my dad already know how to cut a rug. I think we will have a Fr/bride Mthr/Groom slowish dance (because FMIL doesn’t really dance and we dont want to show her up) and immediatley following, my dad and I will dance to Natalie Cole’s “Paper Moon” to really get everyone into a fun faster dancing mood. Now if youve ever heard it, there are lots of places for uber fun twirls and crazy steps we plan on including!!

Nothing unique. :o(
My dad and I danced to “My Little Girl” as well. Unfortunately a song I would have much preferred came out after my wedding.

To brides out there looking for a special song to dance with dad to, check out “Cinderella” by Stephen Curtis Chapman. I cry every time I hear it.

I love the Oasis! My brother is getting married overlooking Lake Travis in December. Thank goodness for Texas “winters”.

I just Youtubed that Tim McGraw song and Googled the lyrics to read along with the music… and now I’m blubbering in my cubicle at work. Awwww….!!

love the fun wedding dances! my sweetie and i met while tango dancing, so we’re going to do the obvious and tango. we will have a wedding party full of amazing dancers, so we’re going to ask them to come up and dance a few songs with us - a sort of tango floor show. many of our family haven’t seen us dancing yet, so it should be entertaining. :)

Man, I thought I was the only one to do this with my pap! Ah well - we’re doing the same kind of thing - starting out with ‘Young at Heart’ by Frank Sinatra, in an attempt to convince everyone of a sweet father-daughter dance where everyone will ooh and aww. But near the end of the song, it’ll cut off and ‘How Sweet it is’ (Michael Buble’s version) will kick in and we’ll ‘kick it’ into high gear with some fancy (choreographed) swing/jitterbug steps! I can’t wait. Practice starts next month (our wedding is in November.) This is particularly poignant as my father was a dancer and he and I have danced together all our lives. Pretty fun stuff!

@kelley: My dad is a dancer too! We were actually planning some good ol’ motown moves to “My Girl” (so, clearly I’ve failed in the originality department.) But, he used to sing it to my sister and I all the time. I need something choreographed so I can focus on the moves otherwise I’ll be a crying mess!
