The Forecast is Mocking Me

June 25th, 2008 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Hummingbird

Since we started planning the wedding, I have been dreaming of an outdoor ceremony. I pictured fresh wild flowers, white chairs on a lush green lawn and a day with a soft warm sun. I even checked the historical forecast data and in the past 7 years, it has only really rained once on our day.

As of two weeks ago (once The Weather Network started offering June 28 as part of their 14 day forecast), I have been checking The Weather Network daily to see what they are predicting for us come Saturday.

First, it was going to rain. Then it was supposed to be sunny and warm. Then it was going to rain again. Then it was going to be hot. And currently . . .

We’re back to rain. Boo-urns! I was thinking about buying a kicky umbrella (ella, ella) or something, but my sister-in-law said that buying one was like accepting it and condemning ourselves to rain. I’ve got three days left so I’ve got to decide soon. What say you hive? Umbrella or no umbrella?

So, I’ll agree to play along that your actions will determine the weather as long as you agree to really know that they don’t ;)

In Oregon, we joke that whoever forgot their umbrella caused the rain! We also joke that it never rains when you remember to bring your umbrella. We know rain. Buy (and bring) the umbrella!

And it may just be the Oregonian in me, but I think rain is romantic!

Umbrella! It will make for such cute photos and also clouds provide great light — no squinting into the sun or harsh shadows. I had a cute pink umbrella and matching wellies on hand incase it did rain and it was a PERFECT indian summer day with not a cloud in the sky…

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Buy the umbrella, and then it won’t rain. (Which is what happened to us.)

i love your SIL miss hummingbird– i’ve been the exact same way about things my entire life! but bf and i (no i’m not engaged and yes i read wedding websites, a little sad i know) made a pact to stop knocking on wood and fearing the worst from our words. we’ve decided that luck comes from god and all bad things happen for a reason. and amazingly enough, the sky hasn’t fallen! (pun intended :))

i agree with erin and mrs. onion– buy cute boots and a cute umbrella and pray for your perfect summer day first and if not, some gorgeous rain shots.

buy it buy it buy it! i don’t believe in you being able to affect the weather. only you feeling even worse if it does rain b/c you didn’t buy a super cute umbrella (which, btw, would make for super cute photos if it does rain. which it won’t.) :)

Weather is only accurate starting 4 days out.. my husband took aviation weather in college.

For the record, I stalked weather too, and it jumped through every possible condition first..

Whenever I have an umbrella, it doesn’t rain - whenever I’m stuck without one, there is a downpour. Buy the umbrella!! :)

It rained every single day last summer in Texas, so 2 days before the wedding, we rushed out to every 99cent store we could find and bought cheap umbrellas for all of our guests. Sure enough, it only rained after everyone had already left the rehearsal dinner, and didn’t rain at all on the day of our wedding!

Buy the coolest umbrella ever so that when you don’t have to use it you’ll be a little disappointed - but you’ll actually be happy because hooray! no rain!

Oh how I feel your pain!

Well, I bought the umbrella (and galloshes) after a week of a rainy forecast leading up to our wedding and it didn’t rain until 10:30 that night (after the reception had just ended).

I say go for it!

Alright, alright I’ve been overruled! Go buy the dang umbrella, but knowing us we’ll leave it at my house or something like that.
PS remember how fun my wedding was complete with thunder during the outdoor ceremony and massive lightning during the dance?? Weather is just a minor detail. and it makes for fun stories.
PPS it’s going to be sunny!

I had a similar dillema - it had rained heavily the entire week before my wedding, including the Friday of the rehearsal. So on Friday morning I had bought an umbrella thinking that at least I would have one. Saturday turned out to be sunny and 80 degrees. In DULUTH, MN! That NEVER happens that early in the summer. It was gorgeous.

Needless to say, I vote for the umbrella.

4 days before my (12/15/07) wedding, the forecast called for a sunny & clear day in the 40s.

Yeah, um - it snowed 8 inches! It was beautiful and most everyone was able to still make it, so it all worked out.

My favorite pic of all is us on the front porch of the church, in the snow…

I just bought silver rain boots that will look great with my dress! With a mid January Philadelphia wedding, I’m counting on some version of awful weather.

I’m with everyone else, buy the umbrella! Better to be prepared, and I’m with Erin; it does seem to rain when you forget your umbrella and not rain when you do bring it. Good luck with weather!! and I want to see pictures of the umbrella if you do get it! My wedding is nearly a year away but I fully intend to be completely ready for whatever weather comes my way and that includes having a kickass umbrella!

Most of the storms we’ve had so far are all short brusts and then it clears up so even IF there’s rain on Saturday it likely won’t last more then 15 mins.

Murphy’s Law dictates that if you buy the umbrella it will NOT rain. So, I’m going to chime in and say buy the umbrella too. It’s not like you won’t get use out of it at some point! Just not on your wedding day ;)

I agree with the rest of the hive. If you buy the umbrella it wont rain. Plus it is a great excuse to buy a nice umbrella instead of a boring black one!

Definitely buy the umbrella and make it a very cute one, perhaps even very expensive… that way Murphy *has* to make the sun shine…

My fingers are crossed that you will not need an umbrella, but I say get one and then it won’t rain! At least that is how things work w/ me - If I have it I won’t need it, but if I don’t have it I WILL need it.

I always say that coming prepared with an umbrella will stave off the rain… and if it doesn’t, umbrella pictures are sooo cute. My best friend had lots of rain on her wedding day and their favorite photos are of the two of them getting close under their pretty white umbrella.

So start hoping for romantic rainy pictures, and you’re guaranteed a sunshiny day! :-D

I agree that if you buy and bring the umbrella, it definitely won’t rain. It only rains when you don’t have one! Buy one immediately!

EEW BOO-URNS! We had rain in the forecast as well. I shit my pants, cried uncontrollably, and yelled at Mr. Penguin for about an hour. It was embarassing. Alas, weather was fine. Break out the wedding umbrella and prepare for some KICK ASS RAIN PICTURES (although, of course, we’re all prayin for no rain for you!)

Dear Canada,

I am a BIG fan– seriously, you all have got it going on in SO many areas:

health care,
gay marriage,
dollar coins,
all those extra letters in words (honour, cheque, tonne)
and a whole bunch (dare I say a “tonne”) of giftedly funny actors that make my face hurt from laughing (Michael Cera, anyone?)…

BUT Canada, I am officially putting you on notice– if you let it rain on my beloved Miss Hum’s wedding day I WILL NOT HESITATE to demote you to #2 Country-that-I-Dream-of-running-away-to-as-the-US-goes-down-the-tubes!!!

Canada, do you REALLY want to risk losing me to BELGIUM?? DO you?? Do you want to have to explain to those smug chocolatiers how you could have had me skipping through your safe streets, Loonies jungling in my pockets, jabbering away in two languages, but NOOOOOO you had to go and let in rain on the big day of my internet girlfriend!

I’m not kidding around here Canada– tighten up! I wanna see sunny, but breezy, warm, but not too hot and go ahead and make the sunset frickin’ spectacular, ya dig me?

Good. I’m glad we got that cleared up.

Cheers,
beanchar
YOUR future ex-pat for the low-low price of some awesome weather

Buy the umbrella. . . ever notice it NEVER rains when you remember your rain gear, but the one time you forget it, it pours.
And even if it does rain, it’s not the end of the world. It’s actually supposed to be a good omen if it rains on your wedding day - or so I’ve heard.

Hola fellow June and Toronto Bride!!
K..so my day was last Saturday in the city of Belleville (bright lights, big city) and I, like you, feverishly checked the weather network and like you too I only received flip flop reports that changed on a daily basis.
My day? Well, even on the day before the forecast was for sunny with chances of showers and although the morning dawned warm and sunny, the forecast on the t.v. was still saying rain. Yeah..the rain never happened! So don’t put too much stock in the forecast this time of the year…and enjoy your day!!

We had the same up and downs leading up to the weather, the same historical data of only once in seven years, and we bought the umbrella. And it did rain, a little bit, but only sprinklings and only on and off and only for long enough that we got some super cute umbrella photos as well as some regular ones. Plus recently we were in San Francisco sans umbrella. The forecast called for rain every day that we were going to be there, and we woke up and it was raining so we went out and bought and umbrella and by the time we were out of the store it had stopped raining and it didn’t rain again the whole time we were there. You can never go wrong with an umbrella.

I say buy and umbrella and embrace the amazing photos you might have. I was told rain on your wedding day is good luck!

Then again, I agree - it prolly won’t rain if you DO buy an umbrella!
