Our First Wedding Gift!

June 26th, 2008 @ 11:46 am by Mrs. Pomegranate

Yesterday, Mr. Pomegranate and I attended a birthday shin-dig in honor of one of our groomsmen. Imagine our surprise when the birthday boy himself, busted out a rather large and exciting gift for us!

A Wii Fit!! I immediately grabbed for my checkbook to pay him back, as we had been waiting for his generous Video Game Store Manager hookup for the past few weeks with full intentions to buy it off of him. However, he stopped me before I could grab my pen to tell me, “Congrats! This is your wedding present!” Albeit a tad early, I can’t imagine a better gift to receive than this! He’s given me permission to break the “Don’t Open Until After the Wedding” rule so Mr. Pom and I can get our flabby buns in shape for the wedding.

The formidable Tree Pose.

We raced home and set it up after dinner. I tried out the Yoga Poses (my favorite) - during the Tree Pose it noted that my leg was a little wobbly (uhhh…yeah) and recommended that I focus on lengthening my spine and stretching my arms. It totally helped! I’ve had a personal trainer before, but the Balance Board is intuitive and picks up on allll those weaknesses you try to hide from the casual observer.

I also tried the Strength Exercises, but have yet to try any of the Balance Games or the Aerobics. So far I can see it giving someone a pretty okay workout, especially if you do it daily. Besides that, it’s the combo of working out and playing video games that I love - it makes it a lot easier to motivate myself to get off the couch and get moving!

Have any of you tried the Wii Fit yet?

I have not tried but I did try back in the day the exercise Dance Dance Revolution and that was a workout to last a lifetime.

I agree that it isn’t much of a workout. I like to feel like I am exhausted after a workout, and since the stupid game makes you push A all of the time and run through a whole bunch of different screens it is almost impossible to work up a sweat.

I am all about DDR, I can pass most songs on heavy, and so 30 minutes of playing has me sweating up a storm. It took me a lot of practice to get there, but it is the best form of exercise I have discovered yet. When I hear That Groom start the music up, I can’t resist joining in!

My husband and I are started housesitting last night, and to our surprise the family has a Wii Fit! We only played for an hour but it is THE MOST fun. The balance games are tough– the tight rope and table shift are NOT my favorite, but I will keep trying. The only thing I’m unsure about is how it calculates BMI. It says my husband is “overweight” and should lose up to 25 pounds to be considered healthy. He’s almost 6 feet tall and weighs 195, and is very muscular (and very healthy). It wouldn’t be right for him to weigh 170! Other than that, we totally love it and want one of our own.

I have not been as fortunate as you to get my hands on one…but I’m hoping by some miracle I’ll come upon one soon so I too can join in the craze! =) Please keep us posted on your progress!

linz … I’m afraid that calculation is correct - 6ft and 195lb is a BMI of 26, which just takes him to the overweight range (25-30).

However, don’t forget that the BMI is only a mass index … it doesn’t take muscle or general fitness into account.

We got a WiiFit (after a month long backorder!) and have been using it for a little over a month now. I love how it tracks your progress and motivates you to keep going. My abs are rockhard (this is from a serious former couch-potato). You build up to the longer, harder work-outs the longer you use the WiiFit, so while it doesn’t seem like such a hard workout now, I promise you’ll be sweating and hurting later on! :) Congrats on the gift!

Oh, I’m so jealous! :) We don’t even have a Wii, but I would love to try the Wii Fit.

You’ll have to let us know how you like the other features.

We do!! And I love it!!! I love that not only does it have fun stuff for you to do, but it has things that required stability and endurance! You will unlock more things the longer you play. So that is really cool. I usually play about an hour at a time, and don’t even realize it!!

My Future in laws got one too, so we have challenges all the time!! It’s been really good for them too!

I love the Wii Fit! I got it the day it came out and I’ve been using it almost every day.

I admit, though, it’s not that great for a cardio workout. There is too much stopping between things. Once you get going on it, you can unlock longer times on the jogging and the step aerobics. You can also unlock the free step, which is a good workout and you can switch over and watch tv while you’re doing it. I think that one goes for up to 20 minutes without stopping.

But for strength training and the balance/yoga stuff I think it’s great. I’ve been using it for a weeks now and I’ve definitely been feeling the burn!

And the scale is incredibly accurate. Way better than my bathroom scale.

My fiancé and I have been using ours for less than two weeks. I’ve lost two pounds and he’s lost three! We use it about four times a week and go for 15-30 minutes at a time.

I was really skeptical that it could actually help me get in shape, but I’ve been impressed with how I feel afterwards. The hula hooping is the best way to get my heart rate up, especially the unlocked 3-min one.

Keep at it and unlocked the harder stuff, and I’m sure you’ll start to really feel the results. ;)

Mr T and I were recently describing to some friends how we’ve been “trying for a Wii for a few months now … We get our hopes up each time we try, but no progress yet. But we’re still optimistic — we haven’t been trying that long.”

And then we realized how much it sounded like attempting a certain other Blessed Event. ;) (Then again, finding a Wii these days may be HARDER!)

We got our fit the day it came out and we love it! My favorite exercise is doing the free run for 20 or 30 minutes — you can watch tv while jogging in place! The yoga is really nice, too — I find myself being more aware of how I’m standing now than I ever used to be.

At first I wasn’t losing any weight, but I was losing inches. I think pounds are starting to come off too, finally!

Are both of you going to use it? I find it hard not to get discouraged/upset when FH loses 3-4 inches and I only lose 1. It’s not really fair!
