Another Cymbidium Orchid Bride

Since I am a very visual cookie, I did a floral inspiration board for my florist, to better understand the floral palette that I have envisioned for our wedding. (Sorry, my sources are a little incomplete because I didn’t write them down when I made this back in March). How did I decided on what flowers I wanted?

First, Mr. Cookie really hasn’t really had an opinion about the design details of the wedding, at all! But the one thing he really wanted, when it came to flowers, was red roses. (Red is Mr. Cookie’s favorite color!) Since we are getting married at the end of September, we are trying to time it so that the fall foliage will be at its peak and the backdrop for our ceremony will be colored with red and orange foliage. So, red and orange roses were in!

Second, when I started looking for a florist and deciding on flowers, I vowed to not be a Cymbidium orchid bride! They are in every bridal magazine, and I was not going to be that bride! Yeah, well that vow was broken the second after my florist put together a mock bouquet with burgundy Cymbidium orchids in it! Yes, now I am another Cymbidium orchid bride! However, after I had broken my no-Cymbidium orchid vow, I felt even worse for not choosing wildflowers, especially since we are getting married in the mountains. So, I decided to round our flower palette out with burgundy dahlias, burgundy hypercium berries, amaranthus, and leucadenron.

All the flowers, except the orchids, will be arranged in centerpiece boxes similar to one pictured above.

How did you decide what flowers to use for your wedding?

As I am writing this post, I am thinking about going back to my florist and cutting the orchids! I think they are really pretty but with a mountain wedding it just doesn’t work. What do you think?

I wanted lisianthus, because they are my favorite flower - when I lived in California, I used to go to the Farmer’s Market every weekend and buy big bunches of them, but they are hard to find almost anywhere else. I don’t know why, because they are a great cut flower, really long lived and not too heat sensitive. Plus they come in cream, pink and lavender - which fits in great with our colors. My bouquets and centerpieces are on an English garden theme, so the lisianthus are rounded out with baby roses, wax flower, snapdragon, astrelomeria, and lots of greenery.

I actually started out as a cymbidium orchid bride and have since changed my mind for that exact reason. We are having the ceremony in the garden of an early 20th century estate and then having the reception outdoors at my grandparent’s house. I realized the orchids might clash with the garden environment and decided to go with a more wildflower look. Although that little wood box with the orchids do look beautiful! Whatever you decide I’m sure it’ll be amazing!

I feel you Cookie (btw, your flowers sound gorgeous!). I am also a September bride and my colors are red, orange, and yellow. I love flowers, but hate how pricey they are…so I decided to have dahlias and didn’t want any orchids.

BUT now I see all these pictures of bouquets with orchids incorporated and I just LOVE how it looks…my florist is really nice and isn’t pressuing me one way or the other…so I’m still struggling with the final flower decision…

Did you see the cover of the new Martha Stewart Weddings magazine…lovely yellow with orchids:

Also, Miss Pineapple’s “florist” has a beautiful bouquet (on the second page top row - red, yellow, and orange) with orchids…that is my current dream bouquet:

Do you like them? If so, then it doesn’t matter if other brides have them, or if it doesn’t go with what would be expected for your location.

That’s our new theme for our wedding … ‘things we like’.

I agree with lou, mountain shmountain! I am getting married in Aspen in September and am using roses, mini callas, and cymbidiums because they are my favorite flowers. No wildflowers - although beautiful they are not right for my elegant formal wedding which just happens to be in the gorgeous mountains. And, I don’t think the wildflowers are right with your gorgeous dress. I say go for something not mountain-y to set your wedding apart from all of the other mountain weddings, and go for what you love. You like the cymbidiums, so keep them!!!

OK, just went back and looked at your dress post - just as I remembered, very structured, glamorous, overall gorgeous and very not wildflower-appropriate. Cymbidiums are the perfect modern, elegant, unique flower to add to your bouquet, go for it!

I swear up and down I didn’t know even until now (3months after the wedding) that Cymbidium orchids are a popular wedding flower. I’ve always love orchids. I thought cybmidium is the most dramatic and best color coordinated orchid. Since DH never got me my favorite flower (he was a roses man) I decided to make it a part of our wedding.

hi Ms. Cookie–I understand your concerns, but I must say that I’ve NEVER seen a burgundy Cymbidium orchid, and I think it’s absolutely STUNNING. The sweet thing about Cymbidiums is that you don’t need many to make an impact. I agree that it’s perfect for a modern touch–even just a few.

I wasn’t sure I wanted green cymb. orchids with yellow and pink on the stamen. My florist found some that weren’t as stripey and didn’t include any pink–which went with my orange and green motif super-well.

I agree–do what you like. Getting married in the mountains doesn’t have to be all rustic–a touch of modern and glamour never hurt anyone. :)
