Multiple Minimoons

June 30th, 2008 @ 11:57 am by Mrs. Pineapple

Mr. Pineapple and I would love to go to Ireland for our honeymoon. We looked into several different trips to the emerald isle, but in the end decided to skip the honeymoon for the time being. Hopefully, next summer we will have enough saved for the trip or maybe next year we will buy a house. Either way, we’ll make it there eventually. We do want to do something after the wedding. Just to get away and be together for a couple of days. I know many couple do it, but I couldn’t imagine getting married on Saturday and going to work on Monday. So, Mr. Pineapple and I are going on a couple of mini-moons.

The first stop: Cleveland. That’s right, tropical and exotic Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland is just a hop, skip and a jump from Pittsburgh so it would be an easy get away. Mr. P and I love to watch Iron Chef America and their new chef Michael Symon. Symon owns two restaurants in Cleveland, Lola and Lolita. Dinner at one of the two locations was the starting point of our planning. For the rest of our plans we will scope out some of Mrs. Dahlia’s recommendations.

Our second mini-moon only sorda-kinda half counts. I am originally from Palm Beach, Florida where some people actually go to honeymoon. We had planned to head there for Christmas this winter and thought we could extend our trip to give us some more alone time in the sun. Either we will go on the might-be-free vacation from Viva resorts or we’ll just trip around south Florida.Mr. Pineapple has never been to Key West and in my opinion it is a place you have to go to at some point in your life. Where else can you stare in amazement at men dressed as Hooter’s ladies while tripping over six-toed cats and eating chocolate covered, frozen, key lime pie on a stick? It is a crazy one-of-a-kind place that I think Mr. Pineapple would enjoy. Maybe we will even go deep sea fishing or something else uber-touristy.

Are you going on a mini-moon or two? Any Cleveland recommendations?

I love that the starting point of your minimoon begins with Michael Symon! I love him as an iron chef! I have yet to dine at any tv celebrity chefs’ restaurants- grrr…

We went on a mini moon right after our civil wedding. Well 10 days after, because my brother was visiting us. His family offered us 2 nights in a bed and breakfast not all that far from where we live (about an hour or less away). We didn’t get to enjoy it the full way because we had to leave early the last day, but it was great non the less, and made us feel more married than if it had just been our simple civil wedding.
I feel very lucky we were giving that opportunity and we even talked about doing a B&B trip for ou anniversary (not going to happen this year though).
The full honeymoon will be taken later on, after the family weddin when we can gather enough time to go and decide on a destination.

Oh, Cleveland makes me think of the 30 Rock episode where Tina Fey visits with her boyfriend. You should watch it! I don’t think it actually provides useful tourist information, but it’s funny ;)

As a native Pittsburgher living in Cleveland, I loved reading this post. How many days will you be there and what are you looking to do? I’d definitely spend some time over in Little Italy and maybe take in the Botanical Gardens while you’re here- fun date! Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a fun half day sort of thing if you’re into that. Ohio City has lots of fun little restaurants as does Tremont- a little before Christmas but you can stop and see the Christmas story house if you’re in the mood. PM or E-mail me if you want more ideas! amyriordan at yahoo dot com.

That’s a really cute idea! Hubby and I just celebrated our birthdays by taking a weekend to go to a B&B near a couple of wineries… it was almost as fun as our actual honeymoon in mexico!

Yum! Dinner at Lola is a must if you’re going to be in Cleveland. It’s such a fun place. When you call to make you reservation, ask if Chef Symon is going to be cooking there that night. When he’s in town, he slpits his time between Lola and Lolita. (Both are AMAZING!)

And if you’re in Cleveland, you’re very close to Cedar Point- who can resist a day in the best amusment park on earth! If you’re going to be there in October, the have Halloweekends where the whole place gets a “Scary” makover and they open a bunch of haunted houses. It’s my favorite time of year to visit. PM me if you’d like some more Cleveland area recs.

My husband grew up in Cleveland, but his parents moved after he graduated from H.S. so I’ve only been to visit once for a wedding.

That said, we went to the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame and I loved it. If you’re into music, pop culture and history - I’d highly recommend it.

Have fun!

Hehe, nothing against Cleveland at all — but your “That’s right, tropical and exotic Cleveland, Ohio” line made me giggle and think of that episode of “30 Rock” where Tina Fey goes to Cleveland, and whereas in NYC she’s a nobody, she is suddenly a supermodel-type in Cleveland. Sorry, tangent :-)

Hey! I’m from Cleveland! The other comments are definitely right, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is definitely a place you want to hit (plan to be there for several hours). The Little Italy/Coventry area has lots of fuinky little shops. In Little Italy, make sure you stop in at Mamma Santa’s for delicious pizza as well as Corbo’s Bakery for a cannoli!

Just a week or two ago, the Cleveland Museum of Art re-opened 19 galleries (it has been closed for a huge renovation). I have yet to go, but I heard its absolutely gorgeous!

There is also Playhouse Square, which is the largest theater district outside of New York City!

The West Side Market, a huge indoor/outdoor market with fresh fruit, bread, is right in Ohio City and a ton of fun.

I’m not sure if you’re interested in the whole outdoor scene, but The Cuyahoga Valley National Park, within a 20 minute drive from downtown, has endless hiking and biking trails. They have converted towpath (that used to be used for donkeys to tow boats on a canal in the 1800s) into a wonderful 70 mile long biking path.

There are seriously endless things to do in Cleveland, you just have to be a little more creative! Please feel free to message me if you need any more suggestions or have any questions!

Wait one more thing! Although its about 30 minutes from downtown, you should definitely consider spending a night or two at a bed and breakfast called The Inn At Brandywine Falls. Its right in the national park, next to a beautiful waterfall (Brandywine Falls) that’s a very popular spot for wedding pictures. The owners, Katie and George, make all of the meals from scratch and are extremely gracious hosts. The inn itself its just quaint and romantic. Here’s the website: http://www.innatbrandywinefalls.com
