Dancing in Three-Quarter Time

July 1st, 2008 @ 6:23 pm by Mrs. Cookie

My dad is an old timer. His first car was a 57’ Chevy, and I remember growing-up and listening to the Beach Boys on vinyl. Being the spunky old fart that he is, he loves to retell his glory days playing college football over and over again. Transitioning into the modern age of technology is not my dad’s thing. He has a computer that he barely knows how to use and doesn’t own a cell phone. Although we’ve had our differences over the years, especially when my parents got divorced, he’s still my dad and I love him!

Now reaching his mid-sixties, my dad loves to dance! He knows the jitterbug like no on else and dances like an old pro. Needless to say, picking a song for our Father/Daughter Dance has been a challenge. It would seem more apropos to my dad’s personality to have an upbeat song to dance to, but being the only girl in the family, our wedding is very sentimental to him. We’ve narrowed it down to two songs, “Fathers and Daughters” by Paul Simon, and “One More For My Baby (And One For the Road)” by Frank Sinatra.

“Fathers and Daughters” by Paul Simon

“One More For My Baby (And One For the Road)” by Frank Sinatra

Which song do you think we should choose?

Hmm, I’ve always thought of ‘One For My Baby’ as quite a depressing song … about a guy drowning his sorrows after a failed love affair.

Since it has such memories for you, how about a Beach Boys song? Although none specific come to mind at the moment … ‘God Only Knows’ maybe?

i love the beach boys! i can’t listen to the songs at work but have you thought about starting with a slow song and then switching to a more upbeat one so you can boogie down with your dad? i’ve seen a video of a bride doing that with her dad. that could be an idea!

I grew up listening to Paul Simon with my family. When I first bought the Suprise album, I immediately (well before I was engaged) knew i wanted that song for our dance! Its not your standard slow-sappy-song either, which appeals to me. We’re pretty goofy dancers, so I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out!

My father and I danced to Father and Daughter by Paul Simon at my wedding this past October. It was my first choice early on. And just like t-blaz, when I first heard it before I was engaged I thought that this was the perfect song. My dad kept trying to find other songs, but finally conceded. Nothing was as sweet as this song, without being sappy. Our band learned it and played it beautifully. And afterwards my father told me there could not have been a more perfect song. It was also easy to dance to.

I loove the Paul Simon song. Heard it on the radio long before I was engaged, and it just made me bawl — love what it says without being sappy. We’re dancing to this in August!

No disrespect to Frank. It is a great song. But Paul… well that brought tears to my eyes.

My BM danced with her dad to Paul Simon’s F&D at her wedding. It made me cry! I say that’s the better choice.

Paul Simon! That’s the song my dad and I will be using. He loves Paul Simon, so I grew up listening to it with him. When F&D was released (waaaay before my engagement), I knew it would play at my wedding!

Much like the majority of comments here, I have been waiting for my wedding day to dance to the Paul Simon song with my Dad. I love it and I think it’s the perfect song. I’m looking forward to using it next July.

I had never heard of the Paul Simon song until now… but how sweet and perfect it is for a father/daughter dance. This one is definitely on the top of my list!

My dad told me “Fathers and Daughters” was our song when it came out so I think that’s what we’ll be dancing to.

The Frank Sinatra song is about a guy with a drinking problem (drinking at the bar alone, telling his problems to a bartender (”set ‘em up Joe), closing the bar at “quarter to two”, etc.) trying to drown his sorrows because his woman left him. Yikes…. hopefully that doesn’t relate to your Dad. If you want a Frank Sinatra song, how about “Way You Look Tonight”. Easy to dance to. Used as the closing song for Father of the Bride (1? 2?). The Paul Simon song is nice if you listen to the words…. not everyone does…. but it isn’t a very good dance song… unless you don’t know how to dance and are just swaying to the music…. (Sorry, Rach, if you know how to find the beat, I defy you to snap your fingers to it, much less dance to it)…
