About Mrs. Peacock

You’re My Best Friend…Maybe

July 1st, 2008 @ 5:59 pm by Mrs. Peacock

After tossing around a million ideas for our programs, I have finally decided on a design. They will look like a combo of these:

fabricp05
from the knot

marthap05

from Martha

img12

from Brides Cafe

My mom and I are using fabric to finish off our invitations (more on those later- they are due to arrive by the end of the week!) and I thought it would be fun to incorporate that theme into our ceremony.

I also thought that it might be fun to put a love quote on the back of the programs. Mr. Peacock and I don’t exactly share a love of books. He is more of an online/magazine article guy with some business text books thrown in for good measure. We do, however, love music. We started listing some of our favorite love songs and looking online for their lyrics. Trying to find a romantic set of lyrics was much more difficult than we had imagined.

As a place holder, I put this quote from “You’re My Best Friend” by Queen.

You’re my sunshine
And I want you to know
That my feelings are true
I really love you
You’re my best friend

It has the perfect combination of being sweet and to the point. It could be said by either of us and it’s recognizable. We aren’t exactly huge Queen fans, however, so we decided to keep looking. We tried the Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Band, and Wilco. Digging through Wilco lyrics was particularly painful because we both love them so much, yet the “love” songs are about break-ups, distance or are just filled with craziness, rendering them inappropriate for our programs. Take, for instance, “I’m the Man who Loves You.” This is the song that the lead singer dedicates to his wife at every concert.

All I can see is black and white
And white and pink with blades of blue
That lay between the words I think on a page
I was meaning to send to
You I couldn’t tell if it’d bring my heart
The way I wanted when I started
Writing this letter to you
But if I could you know I would
Just hold your hand and you’d understand
I’m the man who loves you

It doesn’t leave you with a warm fuzzy, does it? I know it seems like the Beatles should have a good one, but none of them worked as well as that Queen song. In the end, we gave in to Freddie Mercury and he is still sitting on the back page.

I would love some recommendations!

=) I am copying the first one from the knot…have you worked out a template? How large are you doing yours? I worked out the measurements of the pieces and sewed them all together…it looks pretty good, but I’m still working on the template for the inside text pages.

Have you checked out Dylan’s When the deal goes down? My favorite verse is “I owe my heart to you, and that’s sayin’ it true
And I’ll be with you when the deal goes down ”

My dad any I are actually doing our first dance to this song - but it’s a really beautiful song. Check out the lyrics - it’s off the Modern Times album.

Blue Sky by the Allman Brothers? That’s what I would use. :)

What about something from Billy Joel? Like this selection from “Just the Way You Are”

“I said I love you, and that’s forever
And this I promise from the heart
I could not love you any better
I love you just the way you are.”

I think we are going to have very similar invitations and programs. I’m excited to see their big debut and learn about the process.

What about the first verse from “You Are My Sunshine?” There are a couple Brad Paisley songs that are really sweet, too…but he’s country, and I know some people aren’t big fans of anything country.

I love the lyrics to the Beatles’ “I Will”, but I know it might not work as a quote — first verse is kind of sad; second verse — naah, third verse maybe too trite; and I love the last verse, but maybe it sounds too undetermined! Anyway, I like this:

Who knows how long I’ve loved you
You know I love you still
Will I wait a lonely lifetime
If you want me to–I will.

For if I ever saw you
I didn’t catch your name
But it never really mattered
I will always feel the same.

Love you forever and forever
Love you with all my heart
Love you whenever we’re together
Love you when we’re apart.

And when at last I find you
Your song will fill the air
Sing it loud so I can hear you
Make it easy to be near you
For the things you do endear you to me
You know I will
I will.

Good luck with your verse! (I do think the Queen one works!) :-)

Beautiful ideas! Of all the wedding things I did, working on my programs was the most fun. I absolutely loved them!

This is the quote I am thinking of using on the front of our programs (I love quotes!). It is not musical, but literary. But I just love the term “rapscallionly fellow vagabond”. It is a fabulous quote that sums *us* up well:

“You are my inspiration and my folly.
You are my light across the sea, my million nameless joys, and my day’s wage.
You are my divinity, my madness,
my selfishness, my transfiguration and purification.
You are my rapscallionly fellow vagabond,
my tempter and star.”

~ George Bernard Shaw

Oh wow, what a fun project. :) I totally feel you on the Wilco songs! We had “I’m The Man Who Loves You” in our reception mix but clearly it’s not appropriate for the back of your program, which I can’t wait to see based on your inspirations! So, my favorite Dylan love songs are on the “Planet Waves” album - “Something There Is About You” and “Never Say Goodbye” are my absolute favorites but there’s also “You Angel You” and “Wedding Song”. Check the lyrics here http://www.bobdylan.com/songs/

But I can’t resist sharing some lines that I think might work for your program:

Suddenly I found you and the spirit in me sings
Don’t have to look no further, you’re the soul of many things.

(”Something There Is About You”)

Time is all I have to give
You can have it if you choose
With me you can live
Never say goodbye.

(”Never Say Goodbye”)

I love you more than ever, more than time and more than love,
I love you more than money and more than the stars above,
Love you more than madness, more than waves upon the sea,
Love you more than life itself, you mean that much to me.

I was born to be with you, you were born to be my bride,
You’re the other half of what I am, you’re the missing piece
And I love you more than ever with that love that doesn’t cease.

You turn the tide on me each day and teach my eyes to see,
Just bein’ next to you is a natural thing for me
And I could never let you go, no matter what goes on,
‘Cause I love you more than ever now that the past is gone.

(”Wedding Song”)

My other favorite Dylan love song is “Love Minus Zero/No Limit”:

My love she speaks like silence,
Without ideals or violence,
She doesn’t have to say she’s faithful,
Yet she’s true, like ice, like fire.
People carry roses,
Make promises by the hours,
My love she laughs like the flowers,
Valentines can’t buy her.

Looking forward to seeing what you decide!

We are doing our first dance together to a Rocie Thomas song called “Let it be me” It’s a duet so it works from both of and I think it’s wonderfully sweet.

“I’m blessed the day I found you
I want to stay around you
And so I beg you
Let it be me

Don’t take this heaven from one
If you must cling to someone
Now and forever
Let it be me

Cause each time we meet, love
I find complete love
Without your sweet love
What would life be?

So never leave me lonely
Tell you love me only
Now and forever
Let it be me

Each time we meet, love
I find complete love
Without your sweet love
What would life be?

So never leave me lonely
Tell you love me only
And that you’ll always
Let it be me

So never leave me lonely
Tell you love me only
And that you’ll always
Let it be me
Let it be me
Let it be me”

Thank you all! We have loved reading these comments!
@rynkramer: I have been using Power Point. I just sized it in Page Setup. I’m not sure if that was helpful!
@Emily: I think we read the lyrics to every Dylan song. I will have to go back to that one, though!
@milytivers: For some strange reason, I really do not like Billy Joel. Or Rod Stewart. I can’t explain it.
@Ley: That’s so funny! Mr. P was singing You Are My Sunshine all night after reading the Queen lyrics.
@goodvoile: We thought about that one because Mr. P loves that song. It is very sweet.
@sugardre: Oh, I like that one, too! We are focusing on the song lyrics, but I will have to file that away for later.
@ChicagoSarah: AWESOME! Thank you!
@Chris: What sweet lyrics, very romantic! Thank you for sharing.
