About Mrs. Green Tea

You know how amusement parks and fairs always have vendors selling glowing stuff of all sorts after dark, from neon glow sticks to blinking yo-yos? Yeah, I was one of those kids who got to envy everyone else’s glow instead of enjoying it firsthand. Practicality was taught at a young age in my family, and the ROI of glowing items just don’t quite make the cut with such short lived glory. While the lesson was well learned, it must have left me with a bit of a void, which I am apparently trying to fill by ordering enough glowing thingamabobs to make up for my entire childhood.

Let me present to you, the glowing ice cube (in tea, of course):

(and again under less glorious lighting)

The cubes will be served with signature drinks once it gets dark. It will be great fun to be sipping on a glowing drink and it’ll resolve my childhood issues under the stars at our outdoor evening reception. We also feel it will contribute to the fun atmosphere we’re trying to create. The map will tell guests to ask for a siggy drink after dark at the bar ‘for an extra sparkle’, as will the drink menu at the bar. The drinks are currently named: 1) Light Up My Life, and 2) Sparkle in Your Eye.

Now as for the the siggy drinks themselves, they are still TBD. The idea is to have 2, one of them non-alcoholic. There are currently 3 candidates for the non-alcoholic spot:

  1. Original Arnold Palmer (Iced Tea & Lemonade) - our regular favorite drink
  2. GT Arnold Palmer (Green Tea & Lemonade)
  3. Sparkling Green Tea Ginger Ale

Since our venue does not have a license to serve hard alcohol, our other siggy drink can only be mixed with wine or champagne. Sangrias would be great but it’s just too much work. So we’re considering a spritzer of some sort, or more likely a champagne mixed with cranberry or pomegranate juice (for the red).

Anyone else suffering the restraints of the beer & wine only rule in creating signature drinks? Or do you have suggestions for other good and simple options before we conduct our taste test?

What about Arizona’s Green Tea Pomegranate juice?

What about using soju for the cocktail? It seems like it can replace vodka in most drinks and it counts as a “soft” alcohol.

A quick google search revealed this article about soju cocktails that might have some inspiration…

My sister in law served Pom-tinis at my bridal shower and they were a HUGE hit - she even put the seeds in there.

A prosecco bar was the very first wedding related idea that I had — and one of the only ones that’s stuck! Ask your caterer if they can make flavored simple syrups to mix in, as well as old standby juices like pomegranate, blueberry, peach nectar, and orange. Have fun!

PS — ever had a John Daly? It’s the same as an Arnold Palmer but with peach (or raspberry) vodka. MMMMM.

I’m with the crowd on pro-pom juice! Sooo yummy :) And as for the non-alcoholic one, I’m a big fan of Arnold Palmers, so that’s my vote…

(and we’re also beer and wine only due to our venue - though we’re having a brunch reception, so I’m hoping not too many people will be missing a scotch on the rocks at 1 PM (though some might lament the lack of Bloody Marys))

Not to burst anyone’s bubble, but I’m not so sure about those light-up icecubes. First of all, I would worry about the proximity of so many chemicals to something consumable. Second, what happens when someone finishes their drink? Do they just go in to the garbage? I don’t mean to be negative, but to me, they don’t seem to be very safe or environmentally friendly.

Miss Green Tea says:

@katie: cool, thanx for the article!
@suzanno: they’re available at regular grocery stores
@Miss Cookie: @Veronica: they’re available online, I in particular bought from fbl.bz. if you search ‘light ice’ you’ll get lots of results.
@Miss Pomegranate: i know i know! and there’s a glass of pommie bubbly with your name on it for the taste test.
@rebecca: that sounds great, i’ll have to check with my caterer!
@ER: the ice cubes are actually battery operated, so it’s not filled with chemicals similar to glow sticks. the batteries can also be replaced in them, so they are washable and reusable. from what i heard and read, most people like to keep them (which my guests would be welcome to). i plan on leaving instructions for ones not taken by guests to be picked up and i would keep them myself for entertaining in the future as well.

We’re just doing beer and wine, too. Our signature drink will be what we call Poor Man’s Sangria (we really need a better name for it):

Just do half lemonade, half merlot (or a red of your choice), stir it, and voila! Poor Man’s Sangria. Easy to make, and tastes good too! It’s a nice drink in the summertime.

May I also recommend my FAVORITE wine based fizzy drink….
1/2 Fuki Japanese Plum wine & 1/2 Ginger Ale

SUPER DELICIOUS! You should definitely try it.

What a cute idea… we have a fireworks / sparklers / candles / general light theme going on so these would be perfect - thanks :)
