About Mrs. Avocado

My Mom came into town sometime in March, so we decided to look up some dress shops in Salt Lake City and see what we could find. We found A Bride Beautiful and had a really fantastic experience. We had the store to ourselves, and my Mom, sister, and I went to town. Orrie, the owner, was so great at listening to my likes and dislikes and was NEVER pushy.

Side note: Speaking of pushy, what is up with sales people at bridal shops attempting to push their own preferences on you? At another store I visited I spoke about the possibility of a birdcage veil and her response was “Oh you don’t want a birdcage veil. You need a REAL veil.” I consider the birdcage to be a real veil, thank you very much.

I have a lot of pictures because I called all of the bridal shops in the area to find out if they allowed photos to be taken. If they said no, I didn’t visit. I’m all about the photos.

My Mom loved the dresses like the one above. Full of interesting details and flair. I wanted something a little more elegant.

Whenever we found one that we thought might work, we would attempt to improvise some sleeves to get a better idea what it might look like after alterations were done on them. I loved this dress (and still do). Look at those amazing pleats along the bottom! You should know that I have a mild obsession with pleats.

This one was made with a type of fabric that I loved. I didn’t like it as much at the time as I do now.

They found me a birdcage veil to try on with this one. If I were to walk back into the store and choose one dress right now, it would be this one. My waist looks so curvy. I luuuurrrrvvvvee it! (But I don’t have dress regret, I found something better!)

We thought I was going to buy this one. The sleeves would have been so fantastic, and I love the way the bustle looks. As soon as I got home and looked at the pictures I realized that it just wasn’t doing it for me. I decided to keep looking in Dallas after I had moved down a few weeks later.

I had decided not to buy any of these dresses, and I was feeling stressed about how I was going to find a dress, and who I was going to order it from, when I received a card in the mail from Orrie letting me know that she has the ability to order almost any dress from any designer. I had looked through a book of her alterations and was really impressed by her ability to reconstruct gowns. I knew that when I found what I wanted, I would be ordering it from her.

Anyone else think they found “the dress,” only to look back on the photos and change your mind? Also, please brainstorm with me on ways that we can convince the bridal apparel industry that the photo ban is unnecessary and outdated.

Well you are clearly going to make a beautiful bride!! Have you considered a strapless gown with a lace bolero? Like the Marisa 611J? Or the Monique Lhuillier version? I think that would look incredible on you and give you the straps/sleeves.

I hate the ‘photo ban’, but if you’re tricky you can get around it! My sister helped me try on dresses and got photos in the dressing room.

One shop that we went to goes so far as to remove the tags from the dresses so you don’t know who the designer is. I found a dress I loved there and found it online in 45 minutes though!

@october2008bride: I think if I had kept shopping that is what I would have ended up with.
@Mirabella: The second one down is Impresssions Bridal style number 2908. You can see it here. Isn’t the train amazing?

Don’t know if you’ve seen this but Jasmine Bridal allows for “temple ready” gowns - you can add higher necklines and sleeves. http://www.jasminebridal.com/html/en/web2_templeready.asp

I do think it’s quite stupid to have a photo ban too. I mean seriously if you plan to get it done somewhere else all you have to do is pretent you are interested, ask information about the dress and then do so. I’m sorry but if I buy an expensive dress they better tell me who the designer is anyway.
The store I went to didn’t allow pictures either, but I explained that my mom being in France she couldn’t participate in this so i wanted to take some, my assistant was great and told me she would just close her eyes.

I love the ways you pose on the pictures. Can’t wait to find out which dress you got.

Speaking of pushy salespeople, when I went to a dress store to try on the dress I was pretty sure I wanted, I was trying to decide between ivory and white, so I asked. “Oh, you don’t want to cheapen the whole look with white!” the manager exclaimed. I was so confused. Since when is white cheap and tacky? It honestly does look good on some people (although I know ivory tends to be more forgiving), and what would she have done if I had secretly had my heart set on white?! AND, unlike the possibility of making more commission by selling a larger veil compared with a birdcage veil, there’s no price difference between the white or ivory. I was so confused. And put off. I ordered the dress, but from a different store.

@MrsFroggy: I tried the “My Mom is in Washington” thing, but they didn’t care.
@hwong14: What? That is absolutely insane. And terrible, terrible customer service. I would never order from a store that acted that way either.
