Mrs. Milkshake's Picture
Mrs. Milkshake, Seattle/Vancouver, BC Age and Occupation: 23, Pharmacist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Pharmacist Engagement Date: May 2007 Wedding Date: August 2008 Blogging Since: December 6, 2007 Venue: Victorian Mansion About Me: Despite the fact that I’ve invested many long years of my life studying the sciences in college, I’m glad to be out of there and I would never do it again! I’m super artsy at heart - I run an indie craft site, I grew up shooting and developing my own film, doing jazz and ballet, and the whole gamut of art classes. I’ve been called a Jane of all Trades… but I was also told many years ago not to make my passion my career because it’d suck the fun out of it. Hence my choice of day job. We live in Seattle but are having our wedding in Canada to be fair to all our family and friends.
About Mrs. Milkshake

I so badly want these Nesting Lotus Bowls. The first set is from Gumps at $95 for eight bowls. The second is handmade with love by Whitney Smith at etsy. She even makes them in white! The only problem is that the only way I could feasibly register for everything I want online is to go through myregistry.com, and I don’t know how to really decode their privacy policy.

I’ve heard that when you sign up for “free things” that if you put the words “please do not sell or disclose my information” near your name, they won’t. So I signed up for an American Express card at Costco last year, and put that statement below my name. Three months later I got a gardening catalogue that bore the following address on the front:

Miss Milkshake C.
please do not sell or disclose my information
12345 My Street
Seattle, Washington
98001

Apparently their interpretation of “not selling or disclosing my information” was to sell my first name and last inital, as well as my address, but not sell my entire last name! Somehow, by omitting my last name (they really just used the first letter of it), they respected my wishes? That statement was there on my address like it was the name of my business! So perhaps your information isn’t necessarily more safe with a reputable department store. But then again, department stores actually profit from your registry, whereas an online registry tracker would have to solely rely on renting ad space.

I know I’ve touched on the privacy issue before, even specifically as it relates to myregistry.com, but if there are any girls that want to give their privacy policy a once over, that’d be fabulous since I know we’ve got some pretty educated and accomplished bees and readers out there. I’d be more comfortable taking the plunge if I had some more brains weigh in on the issue. Maybe you can tell me if by using them I’m going to enter married life with 12 telemarketer calls a day and 6 credit card pre-approvals every week?

I am using http://www.wishpot.com for my online registry, and the account has been set up for many months (with no sign of telemarketers, anything you mention above, etc).

I picked this online registry because, after a bit of research, I thought it was the most user-friendly and visibly pleasing. After using it for both our showers and getting plenty of items off the list from guests, I would highly recommend it to others!

It looks like you have the right to opt out of them sharing your information, unless when required by law or to complete a transaction you requested. These addresses are given if you want to opt out: P.O. Box 1646 Fort Lee, NJ 07024, or by e-mail at customercare@myregistry.com. They also say they are not responsible if your information gets disseminated to a third party, ie, telemarketer, etc.

This post made me do a little bit of online research to see what I was getting myself into. I have been a member of wishpot (and am using it for my registry) and I haven’t had any problems with it.

I’m so sad about Costco selling out on you like that!

I had a horrible experience with David’s Bridal selling my information to third parties…and I didn’t even buy my dress there!
After trying on dresses, I received a million emails from other vendors, and had to send a letter to corporate demanding they remove me from any lists - phone, email, what-have-you. What they did was illegal, as I never EVER saw anything on the form I filled out that gave them permission to sell my info to third parties. They DO have such a disclaimer that they MIGHT forward your info to interested parties, but it only applies to online registry, and not in-store. I threatened legal action, they actually wrote me back and profusely apologized. I also contacted Better Business Bureau to report them.
Be strong, read any disclaimers and contact BBB when this happens. Lesson learned-set up an email account solely for wedding related things.

We’re using wishpot as well. I’ve had no problems with them selling our information. None of our relatives have reserved anything yet, but our wedding isn’t until September and the wedding is not for another 5 months, so I’m not too worried. Overall, I’m happy with how easy the wishpot registry is add quantities and items. I hated the macy’s registry that I had; they would spontaneously add information, so I understand why you wouldn’t want to go with mywedding.com

Welcome to my personal version of h*ll! I signed up for one silly honeymoon giveaway contest, naively thinking that it was legit, and then David’s Bridal sells my information to like 100 different companies!! I’ve gotten calls from Photographers, Musicians, videographers, wedding planners, YOU NAME IT! Any day, any time- I’m getting calls from 800 numbers. I’m over it… I don’t want their business if they are in cahoots with DB!

First, I got the first set of nesting bowls in green from zanisa.com (they were $69)

Second, I wrote to the three large credit companies and I asked that they make my credit report private and not accessible by anyone who requests a report without my consent. That has cut out all inquiries.

It looks like Whitney Smith offers an online registry. Maybe you could do that?

I’ve been signed up with myregistry.com for a few months now. I’ve not received any phone calls. My email has a spam filter (which I get a bunch of already) so I don’t know if I’d notice the difference. I already get cc offers…I don’t think they have increased since signing up.

We’ve had a myregistry account for a few months now, and I haven’t noticed any increase in anything. I really like the service, but I haven’t checked out wishpot.
