Color Palette Validation

July 8th, 2008 @ 9:26 am by Mrs. Cupcake

Some days while heavily under the influence of my wedding-planning trance, I find myself in a moment of panic when I’m second-guessing my color palette yet again. Actually, we might as well call it ninety-second-guessing because I worry about it so much. Then, on a day like today, I’m reminded of how much I love my color palette of teal and chartreuse (or lime green or bright green or whatever I decide to call it on that particular day…it seems like everyone has a different vision of what chartreuse is!) when I come across an inspiration board like this one found on Sparkliatti:

Inspiration board found on Sparkliatti (thanks Miss Tiramisu and SIL Cupcake!)

Ahh, color palette goodness!

A follow-up post about this inspiration board included a recommendation for colorful flowers to use as an accent. I’ve been pretty committed to using only whites and greens in our wedding flowers, mostly because I can’t decide on another color to incorporate, but these orange and fuchsia flowers certainly add an element of surprise that I hadn’t considered:

This photo is from Sparkliatti, too :-)

I’m meeting with our florist next week to really nail down all of the specifics, and I can’t help but feel a little stuck with not much time to spare. I’m not sure that orange and fuchsia is quite what I’m looking for, but I’m starting to get nervous that the white and green that I’m picturing as “simple and stunning” will just end up looking redundant and boring. I’ve toyed with the idea of adding in little punches of purple, or perhaps just different shades of blue, but I just can’t decide.

Is anyone else out there set on their color scheme but having a hard time figuring out what accent colors will work the best for their flowers? Any other teal and chartreuse brides out there with any suggestions?

I don’t think you need another color and white and ivory would be beautiful! oooo or maybe yellow :)

Why not get out a color wheel and play the “What color is opposite mine?” game if you need ideas? I love the idea of white and ivory myself, but maybe that with a wee bit of fuschia might be a nice pop without adding too much color, you know? Especially given how vivid your main colors are.

Ooh, I really like the teal and chartreuse idea! I’m just getting started planning and I know I want some kind of green as the main color, but I haven’t come up with a solid accent idea yet–I’ll have to remember that! My fiance loves blue! I think it’s a great color scheme on its own, but the idea of adding red and orange does seem neat. At least, it looks cool in the picture. Good luck at you florist’s!

I was just a bridesmaid in a wedding this weekend with tiffany blue/teal as the main color and then orange flowers… it looked fantastic!

I love the idea of popping with some deep purple… that would be absolutely beautiful with your blues!

Flower arrangements of white and green would look classic against your color palette - and totally beautiful! While I don’t think you necessarily need to add another color, I like Miss Pineapple’s suggestion of yellow as an accent. Yellow is such a fun color, and it will really pop against the teal - similar to the way that orange would pop next to tiffany or robin’s egg blue.

I am an Ocean Blue and Aqua girl, but I know the feeling of flowers and accent colors since they don’t exactly come in my colors! We decided not to worry about my colors in the flowers, but instead have the flowers fit the feel better. I’ll have tropical blooms of all colors, tied up in my color ribbons.
Just for a little more justification for ya!

If you want to stick to white, more power to ya. If you want to add another color, you don’t have to go the orange and fushia route, but I would make it something bold and bright since it’ll be used sparingly. I think that deep purple is very beautiful, but it could bring a dark heavy feel to all your colors you might want to avoid. Just a thought!

well that board makes me feel a whole ton better, too! my color palette was to be that same type of chartreuse green with accents of navy and a fuschia/pink…. until my ‘navy’ bridesmaid dresses came in yesterday and they are much more teal than navy! i was a little bummed, but that is a gorgeous color combo and one that is definitely not overdone… now i just need to figure out how to finish it off, whether continuing with some navy (invitation color) or just using the teal/blue the rest of the way! i love it and i’m sure you’ll do it fantastically!

I think a touch of purple and/or fuschia could look stunning with the combo. I absolutely adore the teal/chartreuse scheme - it’s so rich and vivid and fun at the same time!

I have the same colors as you! My flowers for the centerpieces will be cream and green with different kinds of hosta leaves. I thought about accents of purple ( such as in a peacock feather) but instead am finding ways to add copper. I’m also tucking a peacock feather into every napkin. great find with the inspiration board

Oh, those colors are so stunning together! And such flattering colors to most people. I think it is a fantastic choice - it is going to be so very, very beautiful!

I think mostly white and green will be good, but a few pops of orange a fuschia would be a nice touch. Just don’t use fuschia without putting orange in, because otherwise the combo of teal and fuschia screams “80’s!” to me. ;)

Oh, pleeeeease use chartreuse as your green? Teal and chartreuse is my favorite combination ever. If I could do it all over again, that’s what I’d use. So, please? For my vicarious enjoyment? And I think fuschia flowers were be an amazing complement, for sure.

I LURVE your color palette! I always wanted to use green (Kelley or Lime) and an aqua color.
Then in my color class my teacher was talking about how colors make us feel and how our bodies react to different colors and she said that peaches/oranges make ppl engage and I thought what a perfect color to have as centerpieces at my wedding to encourage my guest to talk to one another. So, I came up w/ the color palette that is pretty much that table setting :)
I was worried about how it would look in practice, so thank you for the picture.

@Miss Pineapple: thanks for the yellow suggestion :-) Unfortunately, yellow and I have never had the best relationship, but maybe I will reconsider if I see a little mock-up!

@Kim and @Darlene: I have gone back and forth so many times with the purple…. I’m afraid of it looking too girly then, because I’m trying to make this “our” wedding and not “mine”, but I do think just a tiny punch of purple here and there could be a nice accent!

@Mrs. Lovebug: I love that my colors are your favorite color combo ever! That makes me a happy little bee b/c I love your taste.

I have your page bookmarked…. because you are the only bride I know who is using the exact same color scheme I am. Thank you for the inspiration board… sometimes I think our colors are so different- they may not go together :( It makes me feel better someone else is in the same boat.

The one thing I am doing differently that i love but sometimes makes me cringe is adding dark/hot pink centerpieces. We have hot pink calla lilies and roses to finish our tables.. we thought about white… but it didn’t have the same appeal.

I understand your color freak outs.. I have them constantly.

Yes, it was I who was asking about flower colors. :) There are just so many options that would look great, its hard to decide. I thought I was going to go with warm colors and the last pic seals the deal for me.

Since the teal I am using is deeper, I’m opting to skew the flowers to a deeper shade i.e. burgundy, fuschia and a bit of red.

I had the hardest time choosing flower colors and keep second guessing and I work for an event planning firm!! It all depends on the mood you want, if you want to keep it light and are getting married in the day time, then yes white and green works. If you are having a night time wedding, you’ll need something a bit more dramatic.

Can’t wait to see what you decide on!

I really like the punch of that the reddish-pinkish-orange makes. Very much! I think you should go for it!

The best way, I think, would be to use all different shades of the colors you’ve chosen. I’m starting to think two colors isn’t enough. :) Is that bad?

I am using a variation on your color scheme as well, but with pale grey & pewter (metal) accents. I wanted to introduce another pop of color, so we are going to introduce a deep marigold. It serves two purposes: 1)I wanted more color : ) 2)Our venue is a replica of an Italian Villa, so we couldn’t ignore incorporating at least one element of the the built-in color scheme.

It sounds like a lot, but it’s working well so far!
