About Mrs. Sundae

Good News, Bad News

July 8th, 2008 @ 5:23 pm by Mrs. Sundae

I am going to start with the bad news because, well, that’s how I like to go about things. When I was a kid I would eat all the things on my plate that I hated first, so I could get them out of the way and enjoy the goodness that was my mashed potatoes. Yes that’s right, I just compared wedding planning to mashed potatoes.

Much like Miss Peacock, I feel like all of the advanced planning I went through is blowing up in my face as we get closer to the wedding. The coordinator at our venue quit, there was an interim coordinator, and now there is a new one. Luckily I have been vigilant about saving emails because there have been several instances of “I am not sure who told you that, but it’s not possible.” No matter how many notes are placed in our file and conversations had, I’ve still had to explain every detail to three different people. But that’s nothing compared to the last three weeks…

I went to pick up our invitations and a previous version of an incorrect proof was printed. The flower girl dresses arrived (yay!) and fit neither one of the flower girls (boo). All of our envelopes had to be mailed to the calligrapher, and our printer forgot to include the inner envelopes. This solution involved me on the Crane& Co website, matching product names, ordering them myself, and paying for expedited shipping to get them there on time. The restaurant we were promised for the rehearsal dinner can no longer accommodate us. And the coup de grace…the band we were using for our reception broke up. After two weeks of me trying to get in touch with them someone called last night to inform me that they’re no longer together and would not be honoring our contract. So as of this moment in time, just a little over two months from the wedding, we have no music at our reception.

I am still pretty calm because I know that as long as we get married that day, none of this matters. I am sure that 10 years from now it will be a charmingly funny story that a man named Louie called me at 8:00 at night to say we have no wedding band. I will look back and laugh about the “potato chip incident.” But I share my tale as a lesson to all of you - save your emails, be as organized as possible, and confirm, confirm, confirm. If I hadn’t been hounding the band I can’t imagine when I would have found out about The Split. And I do promise a followup post with some good news.

Have any of you had vendors cancel? How did you handle it? And do any of you know of any good wedding bands in the Chicago/Wisconsin area? At this point I might even throw in a finders fee! ;) Maybe we could form the first ever Weddingbee band…

Yes - my wedding planner (for a destination wedding mind you) quit, yet still asked for payment for her replacement. Someday, I hope to look back and laugh at the new planners incompetence - but, seeing as it was only a week and a half ago - I am not to that point yet.

Lesson learned - Be a control freak - I tried to relax and paid for it later…things were done poorly if done at all…

Perhaps your band needs to be read the definition of the word “contract.” Any lawyers in your family? One phone call would clear up that little issue.

Wow - I totally feel you. I’m here in Chicago - a month beforehand, we had our photographer get diagnosed with some projectile vomiting disorder so we had to hire a new photographer. My violinist sprained her hand a week before the wedding, and I had to scramble to send my jr. high cousins the sheet music and pray that they could learn it in time. A groomsman backed out weeks before the wedding…and you know what? In the end, everything was just perfect.

Btw - I know of a jazz band here in Evanston and NU School of Music students will also perform for a nominal fee. Let me know if you want more info.

Have you checked out gigmasters? I hear amazing things about them!

Mrs. Corn found her band on them:

Oh no! No band suggestions, but if you gave the band a deposit you should definitely get it back, and if the second band you hire costs more you should get the first band to reimburse you for the difference. An authoritative-sounding phone call and letter often get such claims settled right away (ie, people get scared if they think they’re gonna get sued!).

Yikes!! A friend of mine who just got married had her band back out. They gave a lousy reason but she ended up hiring a DJ she really liked from NY and flying him to FL - I guess it was cheaper than the band anyways.

Ask ALL your vendors for suggestions and good luck!

I am so sorry :( We are using Colby Beserra and the Party Faithful. I think he might have a few additional bands in his group if he is booked. I have heard good things about High Society Orchestra, too. My friend Melissa (who you have been in contact with) is getting married this weekend in Kohler. I can find out who she is using, too, and report back.

How did everything go with the dresses? Were you able to exchange them? I am available if you need to vent! I could probably use it, too.

Five Card Studs are good and popular, so they might be booked. But check them out!

Love Monkeys, Lube and Eddie Butts Band are also popular at Milwaukee festivals.

Sorry to hear that! You have a wonderful attitude about the whole thing. You’re absolutely right - you will be married at the end of the day and that’s the whole idea!

Oh, and I had a local band at our Chicago wedding - they’re relatively new, I think. They’re called The Hungry Fathers.

Elmhurst College Jazz Band is amazing. They do weddings and are easily booked. They also have a phenomenal singer named Bethany. Give them a call (630) 617-3500 and ask for their director, Doug Beach.

I am so sorry to hear about all of the “situations” you are having to deal with. However, after reading your post I am now hyperventilating…I’m off to either call every one of my vendors again or vomit, we’ll see which one it is.

Someone I know got married last year and the Five Card Studs played for her. They’re in the southern Wisconsin area. She showed us the demo tape and it was awesome! Think: lounge lizards wearing leather pants. The music was great.

We’re getting married in Madison and hired a 9-piece Milwaukee band called Wall of Sound — we booked them through ACA Entertainment, and honestly it was the easiest contact we have booked so far. They have been very professional and easy to work with, and we liked their demo a lot. They also threw in music for our cocktail hour when we asked. Good luck!!

Oh - I’m in the same boat. Wedding is October 10th in Upstate NY. We were all set to get this Bluegrass band when they emailed and said “Oops we have a scheduling conflict.” We haven’t been able to find another Bluegrass band in our price range and area. Anyone have any suggestions?
