About Mrs. Green Tea

Optimus-tic

July 8th, 2008 @ 3:54 pm by Mrs. Green Tea

I love weddings with unusual elements that show off the couple’s personalities and interests. They often bring in the fun and the funky that make a wedding feel personal and true. After all, the people coming to your wedding should (at least mostly) be people who enjoy and appreciate the real you, right?

I suppose there are times and places where a level of formality is necessary or expected, and to many people, a wedding is one of those times. For that reason, we didn’t get a lot of buy-ins for our over abundant, non-standard-issue ideas at the beginning stages of wedding planning. I learned though, that those who love you, stick around for your crazy @$$ regardless of how ridiculous they sometimes think you are.

Case in point - despite having known my unconventional ways for 17 years, my MOH shook her head with disapproval when I told her about the ring pillow alternative I wanted:

My response to the head shaking was probably something that made it much worse, like, “Well, he has red on him! Matches the wedding! And he’s OPTIMUS! He can protect our rings! He’s the leader of the Autobots, and he DID save our planet, you know. And look at his legs! They have flames! Flames are HAWT!”

The truth is, I’ve always had a bit of a crush on Optimus. One of the only toys I remember playing with growing up belonged to my brother, a gigantic (it seemed at the time) Optimus Prime robot that transformed into a battle station and a truck with a trailer. Today, I still have a few Transformer toys around the house.

With the help of the recent movie, our ring bearer (Mr. GT’s nephew) is plenty familiar with Optimus Prime and loves to play with my Transformers when he comes over. Though his handsome little self can definitely make any ol’ ring pillow look good, I think the smile on his face will be much brighter if he gets to hold Optimus instead. On top of that, OP’s appearance will not only make some rockin’ pictures, but may also make my brother (the ultimate Transformers fan) a little proud. And just as a bonus, when the little one grows up, there is no doubt that I will forever be remembered as the cool aunt with the fresh wedding hookup.

So when I was on the hunt for the perfect Optimus, (he had to be nice and big, have to actually transform, etc.) who took me to the toy store? Yup, my MOH. I’d like to think that I’ve shown her the light about my style of personalization, but the fact probably is that she’s wise beyond her years and knows to ‘accept what she cannot change.’ With her help, and my brother’s help, I now have this baby sitting on top of my pile of wedding crap.

Before I go, I shall also share my Somethin’ Blue - Optimus Prime temporary tattoos (one for the mister and one for me. That’s right, for better or for worse baby, and I ain’t down with being the only one wearing blue!). Mine will probably go on my ankle.

Now all that’s left to figure out is how to get Optimus to hold the rings with some dignity. Ribbon around his neck just ain’t gonna fly and I am not sewing him a mini pillow with an Autobot symbol.  Any ideas?

Would the rings fit on his right arm?

Can he hold them in his hand?

I love it!!

What about on a little chain hooked through his hand?

Umm…wow, I’m speechless.

What about sticking the rings on his gun? (Some sort of device may need to be created so that the rings don’t slide off in transit.)

That is such an awesome idea! My FH loves transformers, so we’re also looking for ways to incorporate them into our wedding! (I even sent him a link to this entry. I’m sure he’ll enjoy it!)

Maybe secure them with one of those quick-release key chains around his gun?

I love this ^_^

If you don’t want to sew a little pillow with the Autobot symbol but still like the idea of how it would look..you could try to find a patch/appliqué of the Autobot symbol and tack it onto a small pillow with just a few stitches. I don’t know how hard it would be to find such an appliqué/patch but with a quick google search I did find some hats that you could probably cannibalize for the logo. Might be a little more expensive but probably wouldn’t take very long at all.

I love it! I love when brides go and choose something totally “not bridal” and add it to their wedding. It’s cool and it will be very fun!

I love this idea .. aside from the fact that I too have a crush on OP.
I digress… I like the placing them on the gun idea.

Awesome! I am jealous!

HA! My ring bearer (3.5 year old nephew) would LOVE this! Everytime he sees a yellow car or truck it’s “Bumblebee!” And all semi-trucks are Optimus Prime. Before I saw the movie I had no clue what he was talking about. lol

kathy says:

how about some sort of back pack??

KatyStardust says:

LOVE this idea! You rock GT!

What about a small pillow or pouch on elastic that can fit snugly around his midriff? Perhaps in the shape of a heart?

Am I crazy for wanting to give O-Prime a big ole heart!? Uhm, and I think my bro had that very same Gigantic O-Prime Battle Station guy!

Linda says:

I love this idea! You could attach the rings with some dental floss or fishing line. Both would be clearish.

oh i wish i could use this myself! i think it’s awesome!

I think my FH has the same optimus prime. I’m glad your MOH came around.

Miss GT, I think this is one blog post the FI might NOT grumble about reading. Many thanks, from one future wife of “Transformers”-geek to another ;)

Ugh, my ring bearer wouldn’t care at all about Optimus but my groom would love to hold onto a Soundwave… he has boxes and boxes of toys and he’s obsessed. Love him anyway.

I think you could probably put them on the barrel of his gun, and then make a stopper out of Fimo clay or some sort of rubber eraser thingie to go over the tip to keep them from falling off. Good luck!

motownpacific says:

I totally puff-heart you and this idea. Best.

Francine says:

If you wanted to get really 80’s I think you could rig up a little fanny pack for OP. That would be wicked.

25.
Alex (zombiegroom) says:

Geek weedings FTW!

I would put them over his exhaust pipes that become shoulder pipes when in autobot mode.

Cole says:

friggin’ awesome.

Asia says:

^_^ I think a ring in both hands would be amazing. lol. Most transformers have partially moving hands, to make weapons easily swapped out (unless it’s just a fist with a hole… which is lame. lol)
So open up those puppies, and you and your mister’s rings and be hand delivered by optimus himself. ^_^ Best wishes!

Jill says:

FUNNY! My fiance has added a line to the thank you’s in our programs to optimus prime, as the sale of the original transformer toy on ebay gave us the $ to pay for our venue!

(I am NOT telling him about your idea, even though it’s super cute!)

hwong14 says:

It looks like his left hand has a hole in it? If so, could you find a skinny stick/dowel/something (I’m not sure how big this thing is) to stick in the hole vertically, then slip the rings down on top? If the stick were long (tall) enough, then as long as your ring bearer carries it upright, there’s little chance of the rings slipping off.
